Enhancing environmental awareness through marine education OceanDocs

Throughout this colloquium reference has been made to a number of environmental problems, most of them due to human activities (e.g. clearing mangrove forests, dynamite fishing, sewage pollution, etc.). While attempts are being made to correct these problems through new legislation and educating adults in more environmentally friendly practices, it is my thesis that we should be putting much more effort into the environmental education of young, school-age children since such efforts will, in the long run, have the greater impact on environmental awareness.

Improving market intelligence for organic horticulture in Wales Organic Eprints

The organic market in the UK reached a value of £1.015 billion during the 2002/2003 financial year. The market for organic food and drink in Wales and the surrounding counties is estimated to account for 6.3 per cent of this, a total of £64 million. Assuming the proportion of sales of organic fruit and vegetables in Wales is the same as the UK as a whole then the market for organic fruit and vegetables in Wales can be valued at £20.5 million for the financial year 2002/03. The area of fully organic horticultural land in Wales in April 2003 was 513 hectares with 102 producers involved in organic fruit and vegetable production. Der ökologische Landbau wächst (BÖLW 2018) und damit auch der Bedarf nach beruflicher Bildung im ökologischen Landbau. In Deutschland gibt es viele spezialisierte Berufs- und Fachschulen, jedoch erreichen diese nicht die jungen Menschen, welche in ihrer Ausbildung noch nicht wissen, wie ihr Betrieb zukünftig ausgerichtet sein wird. Damit steigt der Bedarf nach flächendeckenden Angeboten, um den ökologischen Landbau zu vermitteln. Mit dem Wachstum des Ökolandbaus steigt auch die Zahl der Ausbildungsbetriebe. Z.B. zählt das schleswig-holsteinische Kultusministerium zwei bis zehn Prozent angehende Öko-Landwirte in jeder Ausbildungsklasse (NDR 2018). Når elever studerer insekter og småkryp øver de opp evnen til å observere detaljer. De lærer å bruke enkle artsnøkler, de må notere, studere og fortelle litt om resultatene de har funnet. Noe informasjon, eksempelvis om småkrypenes livssyklus og hva de spiser som unge og voksne, må elevene lete opp på nettet eller i oppslagsverk. Aktiviteten legger også opp til kunnskap rundt det å fange insekter og småkryp, samt at elevene kan tegne og lage dem i modellkitt. Fakta om dyrene kan presenteres muntlig, på en plakat eller på data. Aktiviteten har fokus på læreplanmål i naturfag og norsk.

Knowing food - a privilege for the concerned consumer? A research programme on organic urban-rural relationships Organic Eprints

Community supported agriculture (CSA) is increasingly practised in different countries all over the world and can be seen as a step towards a new style of urban-rural relationship. However, it is argued that CSA is an “utopian entertainment for a few middle class consumers and their fortunate few farmer friends” (Goodman and DuPuis 2002, p. 17). Often, such CSA projects rest on organic agriculture, a farming system which in turn provides food mainly to the middle class of well-educated concerned consumers (Morgan and Murdoch 2000). Thus, one could argue that organic CSA is a highly exclusive concept, and that, in consequence, building urban-rural relationships depends on a small part of society ignoring, for example, poorer, often less educated consumers....

An der landwirtschaftlichen Schule Strickhof im Kanton Zürich hat der Biolandbau eine lange Tradition. Bereits vor über 30 Jahren wurden die ersten Bioversuche angelegt. Im Jahr 2018 wurde der Biobetrieb «Stiegenhof» in Oberembrach/ZH zum Demo-Betrieb für Aus- und Weiterbildung. Dieses Video zeigt, was der Demo-Betrieb «Stiegenhof» bereits heute zu bieten hat.

From September 2006 to April 2008 associations of organic food producers and traders in Germany organised 600 events for 13.000 farmers and entrepreneurs to improve the transfer of knowledge between science and practice. Besides communicating current research results, the project aimed at capturing the need for further scientific studies. Producers, processors and traders have a very high interest in further and profound research into the organic food business. Core questions are not only on soil fertility or the quality of food but also on specific aspects of plant protection, market development and welfare oriented animal husbandry.

I 2004 startede vi et projekt, hvor fire grupper af landmænd skulle udvikle strategier til at udfase antibiotika fra deres besætninger gennem forbedringer i stald, rutiner og mark. Grupperne kaldte vi Staldskoler. Denne håndbog er baseret på erfaringer fra dette projekt sammen med teorier om læring og den er blevet til i forbindelse med uddannelse af staldskolefacilitatorer. Målgruppen er både landmænd og konsulenter. Staldskolerne bygger på en anden læringsform end de traditionelle ekspertsystemer og man arbejder i stedet med ligeværdig fælles læring. Derfor er bogen skrevet i en praktisk og lettilgængelig stil krydret med udtalelser fra de landmænd, som deltog i de første staldskoler. Die CD ""Foliensammlung Biolandbau"" enthält Kapitel mit allgemein gültigen Folien (Grundsätze, Hintergrund, Pflanzenbau, Tierhaltung) sowie Kapitel, die sich vorwiegend auf die Schweiz beziehen (Produktionsstatistik, Kontrolle, Organisationen). Die übrigen Kapitel beziehen sich teilweise auf die Schweiz (Geschichte, Anforderungen, Umstellung, Biomarkt). Die Folien sind farbig und ersetzen die bisherigen schwarzweissen Vorlagen auf Papier. Das Kapitel Tierhaltung ist vollständig neu und umfasst 92 Folien. Mit der CD stehen insgesamt 395 Folienvorlagen im PDF-Format zur Verfügung.

Animal Health Plans for Organic Livestock Farms Organic Eprints

The new UKROFS Standards require organic farmers to prepare an animal or livestock health plan. This should aim to be prevent disease by means of suitable breeds, good husbandry, quality feed, regular exercise and access to pasture and appropriate stocking densities. This article gives an introduction to the process and explains the help that is available.

Dissemination of Organic Agricultural Information: The Role of Key Communicator Networks in Rural Bangladesh Organic Eprints

The study was attempted to measure the role of the key communicators in the dissemination of organic agricultural information in the Tangail district of Bangladesh. The findings of the study revealed that there are six key communicators who are actively working in disseminating organic agricultural information among the ordinary farmers. Among these six key communicators, one is high communicator who usually provide advice and information to ordinary farmers as well as other key communicators. Thus identifying these key communicators from a community, the development organization can train up them and use them successfully in the promotion of organic farming in rural Bangladesh.
