The purpose of this study was to investigate Na+, Cl-, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ levels in the plasma of freshwater and marine/estuarine teleosts collected at different salinities (0 to 34) from the estuarine and freshwater portions of the São Gonçalo channel in Southern Brazil. Any relationship between plasma ion levels and salinity and the capacity of ionic regulation of teleosts found at three or more different salinities (Genidens barbus and Micropogonias furnieri) was also investigated. Results showed no relationship between plasma ion levels and salinity when considering all species together, but the two species collected from three or more different salinities showed a significant positive relationship between plasma ion levels and salinity, indicating... |

Abstract The influence of salinity and temperature on larval fish assemblages, as well as, temporal and vertical patterns on larval fish assemblages off the inlet of the Presidio River, southeast coast of the Gulf of California were evaluated. Samplings for ichthyoplankton and environmental parameter measurements were carried out at three depths, in five sampling sites, during September and December 1994, and April and June 1995. Anchovies and herrings (Clupeiformes) were the most abundant larval fish accounting for 77% of the total abundance. A significant relationship between salinity and the abundance of larval herrings (Opisthonema medirastre and O. dovii) and between the water temperature and the abundance of the weakfish (Cynoscion reticulatus) was... |

In this study, we analyse spatial patterns of macrobenthic communities of the Río de la Plata system, and assess the species turnover or beta diversity and its relationship with environmental gradients. Macrobenthic samples and physico-chemical parameters were collected from 20 sampling sites along a transect of 560 km, including the freshwater (FW), estuarine (ES)and marine (MA)sectors. Three main assemblages corresponding to the above mentioned sectors were defined with multivariate analysis (cluster, MDS). In total 134 taxa were recorded, 81 in MA, 33 in FW and 38 in ES, represented mainly by polychaete, mollusc and crustacean species. Depth, salinity and clay showed the strongest correlation with the observed faunal patterns (pw=0.62; BIO-ENV... |

Recent range extensions of the invasive rapa whelk Rapana venosa, biological data of the population and possible ecological impacts on the food webs of the Rio de la Plata estuary are presented. A total of 41 rapa whelks and 21 egg capsules were collected between February 2004 and March 2006. Specimens were found all over the mixohaline waters of the estuary, with records off Montevideo, Samborombon Bay and off Punta Rasa. Specimens ranged between 28 and 120 mm shell length. Almost all R. venosa presented epibionts all over the shell, suggesting an exposed lifestyle. Egg-masses were attached to specimens of R. venosa, debris and plastic garbage. The spatial distribution of R. venosa within the estuary was coupled with the spatial distribution of Mactra... |

The South African 3 000 km coastline has approximately 370 outlets to the sea ranging from small coastal streams to large permanently open tidal estuaries. The current state of scientific information on the vast majority of these systems, however, is virtually nil. As part of a national program to assess the state of South Africa’s estuarine environment, basic surveys were conducted on these systems during the period 1992 to 1999. This included ichthyofauna (fish), water quality, and geomorphological and aesthetic observations. Some 67% of South Africa’s ‘estuaries’ have been surveyed to date. This baseline data has been analysed and synthesised to render it understandable to the non-specialist but at a sufficiently high level to inform potential end users... |

In tropical estuaries, most fishes feed at different hours during the day. To determine the daily ration and consumption of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta (CGSM) population of Anchovia clupeoides monthly samplings of a 24 h cycle were taken at the coastal lagoon between October 1995 and June 1996. A total of 4389 specimens were examined. The population of A. clupeoides consumes almost twice its weight per year, representing a 0.53% of its body weight per day. Though the CGSM presents a high primary production (990 gC/m2 /year), the percentage that is transferred to the population of A. clupeoides is relatively low (0.055%). Hence, it seems that the high productivity of the CGSM is not being transferred to upper trophic levels due to the kind of... |
