Connectivity is a crucial process underpinning the persistence, recovery, and productivity of marine ecosystems. The Convention on Biological Diversity, through the Aichi Target 11, has set the ambitious objective of implementing a ‘well connected system of protected areas’ by 2020. This paper identifies eight challenges toward the integration of connectivity into MPA network management and planning. A summary table lists the main recommendations in terms of method, tool, advice, or action to address each of these challenges. Authors belong to a science–management continuum including researchers, international NGO officers, and national MPA agency members. Three knowledge challenges are addressed: selecting and integrating connectivity measurement metrics;... |

There is an increasing need to understand community-level or whole-ecosystem responses to multiple stressors since the impacts of multiple stressors on marine systems depend not only on species- level responses, but also on species interactions and ecosystem structure. In this study, we used a multi-model ecosystem simulation approach to explore the combined effects of fishing and primary productivity on different components of the food-web across a suite of ecosystems and a range of model types. Simulations were carried out under different levels of primary productivity and various fishing scenarios (targeting different trophic levels). Previous work exploring the effects of multiple stressors often assumed that the combined effects of stressors are... |

Beyond the technical and technological advances in the conversion of marine by-products into useful products, the territorial, economic, social, political and environmental parameters, which govern all forms of approaches for fish by-products upgrading, must be taken in account. This is essential to understand why and how bioconversion technologies are applicable. The fishery sector is facing several issues such as fish stocks weakening, recourse to imports, aquaculture rising or consumers behaviors which complicate the approach of fish by-products upgrading as it is linked to the raw material processing. Thanks to some projects addressed this thematic in recent years, several quantitative and qualitative data about by-products deposits are available.... |

The exploited stocks of wild bivalves (common cockles, dog cockles, clams, and spisules) in the Norman-Breton gulf vary according to the fishing activity and the environmental conditions. Different studies, carried out by the Ifremer in this region (between 1982 and 1998), enabled the evaluation of the stocks available for fishing as well as the collection of data on these species (demographic structure, growth...). For more information on the 1993-1994 studies and a presentation of the site and the fishery please refer to the reports by Berthou, 1987 and Noël et al, 1995. The bivalve expedition conducted in May 2002, enabled us to update the data on the populations of dog cockles and banded carpet shells, then of spisules and clams, using the same... |

The assessment of mesh resistance to opening is a key factor when coming to fishing gear design to study or optimize the fishing selectivity process. Different authors proposed methodologies to achieve twine flexural rigidity identification and mesh opening angle at rest. Their experimental protocols could rely on complex installations and instrumentation, and identification needs dedicated models or software with possible important set up time. Sometimes, different flexural rigidity and rest angle values for a given netting type were proposed depending on identification or experimental conditions, leading to difficulties to choose a value for implementation in netting structures simulation software. The new methodology proposed in this article is based on... |

The objective of the project is firstly, to assess the fuel consumption for the fishing technique of Danish seine including assessing its distribution in each phase of its implementation and secondly, investigate potential improvements in energy consumption. Sensors on the boat and on the gear have been installed. Measurements were carried out during sea trials. The boat and gear were simulated. From these measurements and simulations, we observe that the route and fishing phase have more or less te same consumption (58% and 42%). During fishing phase, the gear focuses the main share of consumption (60%). This energy is transmitted to 2/3 by winches and 1/3 by the propulsion. Areas for improvement were evaluated: Changing the type of winch (electric vs... |

The integration of fishing management into the ecosystemic approach has been recommended for many years by international consultative bodies; it is also written into international conventions and agreements. The implementation of the ecosystemic approach involves the development of programmes for monitoring exploited ecosystems in order to measure the effects of management steps. Plotting the results of these observations for operational reasons requires formalizing summary performance indicators. IFREMER has carried out halieutic observation campaigns for some twenty years along the coasts of France from oceanographic ships and chartered ships. The objective of these campaigns is to produce abundance indices of species that are of halieutic interest.... |

Introduction : Intra-basin fishing is not grasped as well, partly because of a lack of distinction between pure professional fishing units and conchological units and on the other hand because of the large amount of ships. Poorly adapted codification of the equipment found in the basin is also contributing to this lack of information. Studies on the subject do exist, but the elements necessary to publish notices are not always gathered, this is leading to the proposal of a geographical systemic analysis on the basin. The steps that are being taken are complementing the development of the Geographical Information System already in place in the basin since 1993 through DEL at the Arcachon Ifremer as well as the PECOSUDE European study ¿ caractéristiques des... |
