Community financing in the German organic food sector – an alternative to traditional credit financing? Organic Eprints
Behrendt, Gerlinde; Peter, Sarah; Sterly, Simone; Häring, Anna Maria.
Farms and firms along the value chain for organic food in Germany increasingly complement or substitute traditional credit financing with financing models which base upon citizen participation. However, research on the role of consumers or citizens as investors is quite limited. This contribution presents first insights from a research project on community financing models in the German organic food sector.

Ernesto Genoni: Australia’s pioneer of biodynamic agriculture Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Ernesto Genoni (1885-1975) pioneered biodynamic agriculture in Australia. In 1928 he was the first of (ultimately) twelve Australians to join Rudolf Steiner’s Experimental Circle of Anthroposophical Farmers and Gardeners (ECAFG) which was based at the Goetheanum, Dornach, Switzerland. Ernesto trained as an artist for five years at Milan’s prestigious Brera Academy. He visited his brothers in Australia, broad-acre immigrant farmers in Western Australia, in 1912 and 1914 and during these visits he worked on their, and other’s, farms. In 1916 he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and served as a stretcher bearer on the battlefields of the Somme, France, before being conscripted into the Italian Army and serving jail-time in Italy as a draft...

Pride and prejudice - a comparison of consumer preferences for country-of- origins of imported organic foods in Germany and China. Abstract for EMAC 2018 Organic Eprints
Pedersen, Susanne; Aschemann-Witzel, Jessica; Thøgersen, John.
The aim is to investigate why and when consumers in an emerging economy vs. an economically developed country prefer imported to domestic organic food products. A domestic country bias has been found mostly in developed countries. Three studies were conducted with organic consumers in China and Germany: In-store interviews, focus groups and an online survey. A strong domestic country bias for organic food products is confirmed in Germany, and to a much lesser extent in China. German consumers prefer products imported from countries that are geographically and culturally close. Food safety and health concerns are the primary reasons for Chinese consumers buying organic food. Hence, organic products from developed countries are preferred because of...

Wenig Konzentratfutter an deutsche Bio-Milchkühe Organic Eprints
Volling, Otto.
In the organic industry the usage of concentrates to feed dairy cows is discussed controversially. In the present study it was evaluated how many German Bioland farmers use none or few concentrates for dairy cows. 26 farmers using less than 500 kg concentrates per cow and year were interviewed. On average they have 30 dairy cows, 51 ha, producing 5.720 kg milk with 155 kg concentrates per cow and year.

Allerdings...

It’s organic because Germany invaded Poland: How and why organic got its name and the Oxford connection Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
The term “organic farming” first appeared in Lord Northbourne’s manifesto of organic agriculture, Look to the Land, published in 1940. This paper reveals how the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939 was the compelling reason for the writing of the book, and how the University of Oxford played key roles at important times in Northbourne’s life in shaping and sustaining his thinking. He was both a graduate in agriculture as well as a lecturer in agriculture of the university. This paper examines how and why the term ‘organic’ came to be, the timing of the term and the timing of the book, and why WWII was a crucial element in shaping Northbourne’s framing of the food contest of modern times as a contest of ‘organic versus chemical farming’. He foresaw this as a...

Breslau (Wrocław): In the footsteps of Rudolf Steiner Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Rudolf Steiner wrote that “The nearness of the Koberwitz estate to Breslau made it possible to unite the agricultural course with other anthroposophical work”. Each day, after the Agriculture Course was presented at the Koberwitz chateau of Count Keyserlingk, Steiner commuted to Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland) and back. Most attendees of the Agriculture Course stayed at Breslau and commuted daily in the opposite direction. Steiner’s evening karma lectures were delivered in the lecture hall on the top floor of the Viktoria School (now Liceum Ogólnokształçace Nr 1). Wrocław is now a vibrant, prosperous, Polish city, having been forfeited by Germany following WWII. Wrocław is the European Capital of Culture (Europejska stolica kultury) for 2016.

Increasing organic consumption by school meals – lessons learned in the iPOPY project Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin; Nölting, Benjamin.
Increasingly, food consumption occurs in out-of-home contexts, where organic food can also have a role to play. Public food services may be utilised to increase the sustainability of providing nutrition. Although school meals may be well suited to integrating organic food and sustainable nutrition concepts, school food provision systems are very different across Europe. This paper compares school food provision systems and their utilisation of organic food in Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy and Norway, discussing how various strategies and instruments used for organic food procurement in school meals may increase organic food consumption. Using five analytical categories—(a) type of school food service, (b) degree of public financing, (c)...

Protokoll der Anhörung zum Aktionsprogramm Ökolandbau 4.-5. September 2001 in der FAL (Überarbeitete und strukturierte Fassung Nov. 2004) Organic Eprints
Kuhnert, Heike; Nieberg, Hiltrud.

The EU health claims regulation and its impact on the marketing of organic food Organic Eprints
Aschemann, J.; Maroscheck, N.; Hamm, U..
The so-called EU health claims regulation changes the legal framework for all health-related statements on food and in advertising. As health reasons are a major motive for purchasing organic food, organic market actors have to consider the opportunities and threats posed by the new regulation. This contribution discusses the relationship between the organic attribute and the health claim attribute on the basis of a literature review and expert interviews. We argued that there is no scientific basis for depicting organic products as ‘healthy as such’. The use of health claims for and on organic food can be problematic as well as promotive. Whether health claims are favourable or not depends, among other things, on product characteristics, the target...

Country Report on Organic Food and Farming Research in Germany Organic Eprints
Lange, Stefan; Williges, Ute; Saxena, Shilpi; Willer, Helga.
Recently, research about organic farming has gained strong impulses in Germany. Schools of higher education, as well as state research centres steadily opened up, and with the funding under the Federal Organic Farming Scheme BÖL1 organic farming research has been strengthened substantially. Research about organic farming has a long tradition in Germany, going as far back as into the twenties of the last century. At that time the first – mainly biodynamic – pioneers started to carry out research on their farms. The Institute for Biodynamic Research IBDF2 founded in 1950, was one of the first private research institutions in the world. Also the first university chair for organic agriculture emerged in Germany, where until today more specific...

Marktanalyse für Biohonig in der Schweiz und Deutschland Organic Eprints
Lottaz, Salome; Garibay, Salvador; Richter, Toralf; Hirsch, Stefan.

Goy, Iris Angela; Waibel, Hermann.
Information on the situation of organic horticulture in Germany is scarce and thus poses a constraint to further development of the sector. For example, not much is known about the costs of acquiring information necessary for the decision to switch from conventional to organic production. The objective of this project is twofold: (1) to describe the institutional and economic conditions of organic horticulture in Germany (2) to assess the costs of acquiring information incurred by decision-makers before, during and after the decision to start organic production. Data are being collected by expert interviews and farm surveys. Initial results show that experts from the fields of certification, monitoring, extension, marketing and research expect a more...
