Annual skeletal extension of two reef-building corals from the Colombian Caribbean Sea OceanDocs
Charry, H.; Alvarado, E.M.; Sánchez, J.A..
The skeletal growth of the scleractinian corals Diploria labyrinthiformis (Linnaeus 1758) and Montastraea annularis (Ellis and Solander 1786) from Isla Grande (north of Rosario islands), Colombian Caribbean, was determined from annual extension increments revealed by X-radiography of 4-6 mm thick slabs obtained along the axis of maximum growth. The skeletal extension average rate for the last 22 years for D. labyrinthiformis was 3.8 mm year-1 (SE 0.10; N = 87). The correlation between growth of D. labyrinthiformi s and hours of sunlight was significantly negative. The annual variances of sunlight enhanced annual statistically significant differences of growth in this species. M. annularis showed an average extension growth of 10.6 mm year-1 (SE 0.32; N =...

Bouriga, N.; Cherif, M.; Hajjej, Gh.; Guignard, J-P.; Faure, E.; Trabelsi, M..

Panulirus argus postlarva performance fed with fresh squid OceanDocs
Rodríguez-Viera, L.; Perera, E..
There is a great interest in the growout of spiny lobster postlarva captured in the wild. This activity has been developed rapidly in Asia and especially in Vietnam. However, lack of appropriated formulated diets remains the main constrain to the sustainable expansion of this activity worldwide. Until now, best growth rates have been obtained with the use of high inclusion of krill meal and/or krill hydrolysates which are expensive. However, squid is today avoided as food ingredient due to low digestibility reported. Also, fresh squid has been demonstrated to produce poor growth performance in temperate lobsters, but there is no report for P. argus fed exclusive on fresh squid. This work examines the effect of fresh squid on growth of P. argus...

Regulación denso-dependiente del crecimiento individual de la almeja púrpura (Amiantis purpurata, Lamarck 1818) OceanDocs
Pappalardo, M.P.; Morsan, E.M..
In this study we analyze growth, mortality and estimated biomass trend of purple clam, Amiantis purpurata, population placed in Playa Villarino, (Northern San Matias gulf, Argentina) in the southern most boundary of its geographical distribution. Previously, the population structure was described composed by three consecutive cohorts settled among 1978-1980, and the individual growth rate showed high spatial variability. The hypothesis to test in this study is that growth rate is regulated by local biomass. We choice four sites with different densities, to assess growth rate, natural mortality and retrospective estimated biomass trend. During February 2003, densities and growth rate (using external growth bands measurements) were analyzed matching with a...

Capacité de l'espace côtier face a la croissance des usages : problèmes et strategies OceanDocs
Blivi, A.B..

Growth and biomass allocation of the C4 grasses Brachiaria brizantha and B. humidicola under shade PAB
DIAS-FILHO,MOACYR BERNARDINO.
The growth and biomass allocation responses of the tropical forage grasses Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu and B. humidicola were compared for plants grown outdoors, in pots, in full sunlight and those shaded to 30% of full sunlight over a 30day period. The objective was to evaluate the acclimation capacity of these species to low light. Both species were able to quickly develop phenotypic adjustments in response to low light. Specific leaf area and leaf area ratio were higher for low-light plants during the entire experimental period. Low-light plants allocated significantly less biomass to root and more to leaf tissue than high-light plants. However, the biomass allocation pattern to culms was different for the two species under low light: it increased...

Physiological and morphological responces of Brachiaria spp. to flooding PAB
DIAS-FILHO,MOACYR BERNARDINO; CARVALHO,CLÁUDIO JOSÉ REIS DE.
The physiological and morphological responses of the forage grasses Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu, B. decumbens and B. humidicola were compared for plants grown in pots under flooding and well-drained conditions for 14 days. Flooding reduced specific leaf area and biomass allocation to roots in all species and enhanced leaf senescence in B. brizantha and B. decumbens. Relative growth rate was reduced by flooding in B. brizantha and B. decumbens, but not in B. humidicola.Leaf elongation rate was unaffected by flooding in B. decumbens and B. humidicola, but declined in B. brizantha since the first day of flooding. Net photosynthesis and leaf chlorophyll content were reduced by flooding in B. brizantha; however, no flooding effect could be detected in the...

Infrared thermometry to schedule irrigation of common bean PAB
Lobo,Francisco de Almeida; Oliva,Marco Antonio; Resende,Morethson; Lopes,Nei Fernandes; Maestri,Moacyr.
The objective of this work was to determine the critical irrigation time for common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Carioca) using infrared thermometry. Five treatments were analyzed. Canopy temperature differences between plants and a well-watered control about 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5±0.5ºC were tested. Physiological variables and plant growth were analyzed to establish the best time to irrigate. There was a significant linear correlation between the index and stomatal resistance, transpiration rate, and leaf water potential. Although significant linear correlation between the index and mean values of total dry matter, absolute growth rate, and leaf area index was found, no correlation was found with other growth index like relative growth rate, net...
