Through the analysis of the morphological changes ocurring in the process of growth, it was possible to identify three stages (primary juvenile: 25-75 mm; secondary juvenile: 76-160 mm; and juvenile preadult: 161-250 mm)during the first year of the species life. Regression equations for the different relations studied: body weight/body lenght, body surface/body lenght, body surface/body weight, and metabolic rate/body lenght, have been calculated for each stage. The variation of the number of gill rakers, mean distance between adjacent rakers and mean values of gill rakers lenght in reference to body growth was studied, and the relation between filtering area and body length was established. |

The ontogeny of the first stages of development of hake (Merluccius hubbsi)considering yolksac larvae, preflexion larvae, larvae in flexion, postflexion larvae, transformation larvae and posttransition juveniles, is described. Fish larvae and posttransition juveniles were collected in the north Patagonian area, between 42° and 46°S, from surroundings of the coast to the 100 m isobath (Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic). The larvae were collected between December and February, and the posttransition juveniles, in April and June since 1989 to 2004. The morphometrics variables and pigmentation were recorded in 127 larvae y 41 posttransition juveniles ranging in total length (TL)from 2.0 to 35.0 mm. Additionally, the openning of the mouth was calculated and... |

This study determined the effect of different shrimp head meal (SHM) levels (0, 5, 15, 25 and 30%) in practical diets for Caribbean white shrimp juveniles Litopenaeus schmitti (0.29 ± 0.0025 g). A totally randomized experimental design was carried out under laboratory conditions during 54 days. There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in survival of shrimps in all treatments evaluated. This result indicated that SHM included at 5, 15 and 25% in diet promoted growth. The relation of SHM inclusion level in diet with final weight (FW), food conversion rate (FCR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) were described by the following quadratic equation: FW = 0.8023 + 0.0604 S - 0.0018 S2, 2 =0.81; FCR = 8.0019 - 0.6081 S + 0.0164 S2, R2 =0.82 and PER =... |

Postlarvae and juveniles of Farfantepenaeus spp. and Xiphopenaeus kroyeri were collected at Boca de la Barra (Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta), by means of a channel net that orientates with the tide. Sampling was carried out every two weeks for ayear (February 1998 – February 1999), so that each sampling date corresponded to full and new moon alternatively. Farfantepenaeus spp. postlarvae tended to appear in the dry season and with significantly greater abundance during full moon (Mann-Whitney test, P<0.05). Juveniles showed a different pattern: there were significant differences between seasons (Mann-Whitney test, P< 0.05) with higher concentrations in the rainy season, but not so between moon phases (Mann-Whitney test, P>0.05). In the case of X.... |

The effects of habitat characteristics (mangrove creek, sandflat, mudflat and seagrass meadow) water salinity, temperature, and depth on the density, spatial distribution and size distribution of juveniles of five commercially important penaied shrimp species (Metapenaus monoceros, M. stebbingi, Fenneropenaeus indicus, Penaeus japonicus and P. semisulcatus) were investigated during a high shrimp recruitment peak lasting from January to June 2002, in four contiguous habitats within a non-estuarine mangrove bay at Saco da Inhaca, Inhaca Island, Southern Mozambique. A total of 14,976 specimens representing the five species were collected by means of a 1m beam-trawl fitted with a 2 mm mesh net with a cod-end. Every two weeks corresponding with spring tides on... |

This work reports on the inter rod distance in a single sorting grid adapted for the escape of hake juveniles. A good performance of the device was reported due to the DEJUPA trials carried out in April 1997. In may 1998 a new survey with DEJUPA was carrie out with 30 mm, 33 mm, and 40 mm separation distance bars, in order to optimise the escape of the species at first length maturity (35 cm). Selectivity curves with maximum likelihood method were obtained for each inter rod distance being the length at 50. (L50) 29, 32 and 37 respectively. A weighd lineal regression (Feasible General Squares Model) between L50 and inter rod distance was fitted from each L50 estimated variance. An estimation of 37 mm inter rod distance for L50=35 cm total length was... |

The life history of numerous aquatic organisms involves a pelagic larval stage, followed by a shift to a demersal or benthic existence (settlement) in the juvenile and adult stage. This transition and ecological, physiological and morphological changes frequently remain recorded like checks or marks in fish otoliths. As a contribution to the knowledge of hake (Merluccius hubbsi)life history, sagittae otoliths of larvae and juveniles with total length between 19 and 190 mm inhabiting North Patagonian and Bonaerensis waters in the Argentine sea (SW Atlantic)were analyzed. Using an image analysis system, otoliths microstructure was described and comparisons between left and right otoliths and between study areas in the following variables were realized:... |

Mariculture in Argentina has expanded over the last years. Flounders of the Paralichtydae family are a very important fishery resource due to their abundance, meat quality, and high market price. The first mass production of juveniles of Paralichthys orbignyanus in captivity was successfully performed in 2002 at the Estación Experimental de Maricultura (EEM), Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), Mar del Plata. Moreover, it has got potential as a species for cultivation, due to its behaviour in captivity, good growth, survival and feed conversion rates. In this study, the parameters that affect this flounder cultivation under controlled conditions and in closed recirculating seawater system, are presented. Temperature, pH, and... |
