Through the analysis of the morphological changes ocurring in the process of growth, it was possible to identify three stages (primary juvenile: 25-75 mm; secondary juvenile: 76-160 mm; and juvenile preadult: 161-250 mm)during the first year of the species life. Regression equations for the different relations studied: body weight/body lenght, body surface/body lenght, body surface/body weight, and metabolic rate/body lenght, have been calculated for each stage. The variation of the number of gill rakers, mean distance between adjacent rakers and mean values of gill rakers lenght in reference to body growth was studied, and the relation between filtering area and body length was established.

Effect of shrimp head meal inclusion level in litopenaeus schmitti juveniles diet. OceanDocs
Jaime Ceballos, B. J.; Fraga Castro, I.; Galindo López, J.; Alvarez Capote, J.S..
This study determined the effect of different shrimp head meal (SHM) levels (0, 5, 15, 25 and 30%) in practical diets for Caribbean white shrimp juveniles Litopenaeus schmitti (0.29 ± 0.0025 g). A totally randomized experimental design was carried out under laboratory conditions during 54 days. There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in survival of shrimps in all treatments evaluated. This result indicated that SHM included at 5, 15 and 25% in diet promoted growth. The relation of SHM inclusion level in diet with final weight (FW), food conversion rate (FCR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) were described by the following quadratic equation: FW = 0.8023 + 0.0604 S - 0.0018 S2, 2 =0.81; FCR = 8.0019 - 0.6081 S + 0.0164 S2, R2 =0.82 and PER =...

Growth in the 0-group of Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi) from the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone OceanDocs
Santos, B.A.; Renzi, M.A..
Growth of hake (Merluccius hubbsi) in the 0-group from the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone was studied and spawning data were back-calculated by identifying daily growth rings in otoliths of specimens caught during research cruises performed in May 1997, May 1998 and June 1999. Total length (TL) range was 14-69 mm. Increments were read under microscope using an otolith daily ring measurement system (RATOC). Changes in the increment width data present a pattern that seemed to be similar, and independent from birth date of individuals. Data observed and back-calculated showed good accordance with the Laird-Gompertz model. Significant differences between coefficients were found in all comparisons of growth curves for observed and retrocalculated data....

Bruno, Daniel O..
The role of the Mar Chiquita lagoon and its adjacent coastal area as nursery ground for fish larvae and juveniles and the factors which regulate their recruitment process, was evaluated. To do so, we analyzed the fish early life stages composition and spatio-temporal variation over the marine-estuarine gradient of the lagoon and its relationship with environmental factors; the diel variation of these stages in the immediate area at the mouth of the lagoon; and the source of the organic carbon which feed them on the mouth of the lagoon and adjacent coastal area, by using stable isotope analysis. The richness and mean density of larvae were higher at the offshore area than at the lagoon. Inside the lagoon the dominant species in larval stage was Brevoortia...

OceanDocs
Ercoli, R.; Garcia, J.C.; Aubone, A.; Salvini, L.; Bertelo, R..
This work reports on the inter rod distance in a single sorting grid adapted for the escape of hake juveniles. A good performance of the device was reported due to the DEJUPA trials carried out in April 1997. In may 1998 a new survey with DEJUPA was carrie out with 30 mm, 33 mm, and 40 mm separation distance bars, in order to optimise the escape of the species at first length maturity (35 cm). Selectivity curves with maximum likelihood method were obtained for each inter rod distance being the length at 50. (L50) 29, 32 and 37 respectively. A weighd lineal regression (Feasible General Squares Model) between L50 and inter rod distance was fitted from each L50 estimated variance. An estimation of 37 mm inter rod distance for L50=35 cm total length was...

Buratti, C.C..
The life history of numerous aquatic organisms involves a pelagic larval stage, followed by a shift to a demersal or benthic existence (settlement) in the juvenile and adult stage. This transition and ecological, physiological and morphological changes frequently remain recorded like checks or marks in fish otoliths. As a contribution to the knowledge of hake (Merluccius hubbsi)life history, sagittae otoliths of larvae and juveniles with total length between 19 and 190 mm inhabiting North Patagonian and Bonaerensis waters in the Argentine sea (SW Atlantic)were analyzed. Using an image analysis system, otoliths microstructure was described and comparisons between left and right otoliths and between study areas in the following variables were realized:...

OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C..
Hyaline or slow growth rings were identified in juvenile castañeta otoliths Cheilodactylus bergi, with the aim of establishing an objective criteria for age determination in this life stage.Samples were obtained from four research cruises carried out between 1988 and 1991 in the north-patagonian continental shelf and Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (CFZ)(SW Atlantic, between 34° and 47°S). Through measurement of sagitta otoliths, the existence of three hyaline rings was determined. The one closer to the nucleusis formed during the first winter in the fish life or when larval metamorphosis occurs (1-2 months after spawning peak). The second ring was related to the transitional period between postlarvae and juvenile. This involves a habitat change,...
