The SMEs Performance by the New Technologies Application: The Case of Olive-Oil in Puglia AgEcon
de Felice, Annunziata; Martucci, Isabella.
Since the facility for exchanging information and sharing knowledge increases both the competitiveness of companies and worker productivity, the opportunities that information and communication technology (ICT) offers for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) cannot be neglected. From the SMEs, operating in traditional sectors, generally located in the South, we have selected those in the olive-oil sector, to measure the use of ICT and, in particularly, the development of E-commerce. The aim of this paper is to show the application and development of Internet and E-Commerce in the olive-oil sector of Puglia and to verify if companies are creating new network-like relations which can from a local productive system. In the first part theoretical aspects of...

Comparative Public Support for Conserving Reptile Species is High: Australian Evidence and its Implications AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A.; Wilson, Clevo; Swarna Nantha, Hemanath.
This paper investigates factors influencing the public’s support for conservation of tropical reptile species in a focal group drawing on Australian data and an experiment involving a sample of the Australian public. The influences of the likeability of the species, their degree of endangerment, ethical considerations as well as knowledge are examined and found to be important. Likeability is found to be much less important than the existing literature suggests. This is highlighted by comparing the likeability of the focal group of reptiles with that for a group of birds and a group of mammals with differences in willingness to pay for their conservation.

PARKS, POPULATION, AND RESETTLEMENT IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC AgEcon
Stycos, J. Mayone; Duarte, Isis.
A survey of 139 men and 123 women in four communities bordering Los Haitises National Park in the Dominican Republic took place in late 1992. The survey followed a presidential decree ordering the army to clear the forest of people and cattle and to resettle a number of villages. The survey found that people admitted using the forest for firewood and cash crop cultivation. However, they were aware of the need to conserve the forest and expressed willingness to compromise on its use. They were less aware of park boundaries and did not understand the concept of a national park. Villagers welcomed rapid population growth, and women favor (and have) large families despite high rates of sterilization. Nearly everyone opposed resettlement and favored...

Investigating consumer knowledge and behaviour in the context of functional foods AgEcon
Hall, Clare.
The future of functional foods will depend on the extent to which they are accepted by consumers. Results are presented from a questionnaire that investigated consumers’ self-reported knowledge, behavioural intentions and purchasing behaviour regarding functional foods. Findings are that two thirds of UK respondents, just less than half of Danish respondents, almost two thirds of Spanish respondents, and 88% of Polish respondents say they buy one or two functional food items per week. Between 30-55% of respondents say they understand functional foods reasonably well (UK 55%; Denmark 30%; Spain 43%; Poland 49%). A number of factors were related to respondents’ stated intention to purchase probiotics. If someone in the household had suffered food poisoning...

KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION, MULTIFUNCTIONALITY OF AGRICULTURE AND PUBLIC DECISIONS: CRITICAL ISSUES OF CONTEMPORARY CONTROVERSIES AgEcon
Laurent, Catherine E.; Labarthe, Pierre; Berriet-Solliec, Marielle; Trouve, Aurelie; Kirsch, Marc.
Various theoretical models of public policy analysis are used to treat situations of decision-making in which public deciders have to take into account the multifunctionality of agriculture. For some, science-society relations are not really problematical. Others acknowledge the current attempts of these policy-makers to find adequate scientific knowledge, and the difficulties they encounter. These difficulties stem partly from the very content of knowledge produced by research. Could other modes of production be more efficient? The status of the knowledge produced by these approaches is a subject of debate. Bridging the divide between science and policy more effectively is not only a question of knowledge brokerage. Accessibility and reliability of the...

Assessing the impact of agricultural research on farmer's knowledge about African animal trypanosomosis : An application of the propensity score matching approach AgEcon
Liebenehm, Sabine; Affognon, Hippolyte; Waibel, Hermann.
Ex-post evaluation of agricultural research is aimed to empirically provide evidence of past investments’ effectiveness. This paper is intended to measure the immediate impact of livestock research activities on cattle farmers’ knowledge about trypanosomosis and its therapeutic and preventive control strategies. According to the quasi-experimental design of the intervention, it is shown that its impact will be adequately estimated by propensity score matching (PSM). Based on data collected according to a knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) questionnaire in the region of Kénédougou that is common to Mali and Burkina Faso, results indicate a significant gain in farmers’ know-how due to participation in livestock research activities.

Combining cluster and value chain approaches to analyze the competitiveness of fresh vegetables producers: case studies in Germany, Italy and Spain AgEcon
Riedel, Bettina; Bokelmann, Wolfgang; Canavari, Maurizio.
European producers of fresh vegetables are under pressure to improve their performance in order to increase competitiveness. Innovative products and processes and competitive advantage can be gained by the creation and use of unique resources as an outcome of cooperation between producers and complementary actors in local clusters. However, locally clustered producers do not sell to open markets but instead need access to value chains governed by lead firms: the large European retail chains, which decide the rules and conditions of participation. The study claims the necessity to combine aspects from cluster theory with ideas from global value chain approach to discover elements in European fresh vegetable business that could enable local producers to gain...

Information and Wildlife Valuation: Experiments and Policy AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A.; Wilson, Clevo.
An experiment involving 204 residents of Brisbane, Australia is outlined and the results are reported and analysed. Two consecutive surveys of the respondents provide data about their stated knowledge of 23 wildlife species present in tropical Australia, many of which exclusively occur there. In addition, these surveys provide data about the willingness of respondents to pay for the conservation of those species belonging to three taxa: reptiles, mammals, and birds. The respondents’ stated knowledge of the species is compared with their willingness to pay for species’ conservation, and relevant inferences are drawn. When the respondents’ knowledge of the species is experimentally increased in a balanced way, it is found to result in more dispersion...

SER COMPETITIVO SEM DEIXAR DE SER COOPERATIVO: PROPOSTA DE ANÁLISE SISTÊMICA PARA O DILEMA DAS COOPERATIVAS AgEcon
Holf, Debora Navar; Binotto, Erlaine; Padilha, Ana Claudia Machado.
Adversities, generally, have the capacity to generate behaviors that aggregate people. The objective of this work is to propose an analytical structure, using approaches such as social entrepreneurship, culture, knowledge and cooperation, to treat systematically the competitiveness dilemma that agricultural cooperatives face. The premise of this structure is that the social entrepreneurship that supports organizations such as agricultural cooperatives brings together culture, knowledge and a cooperative stance, which tend to influence the performance of the organization through their presence in its other internal factors. The basic concept of a cooperative organization is its most important differentiating factor because it presupposes that the purpose of...

META-ANALYSIS OF THE HISTORY OF THE STUDY OF THE FRESHWATER TURTLE AND TORTOISE FAUNA OF COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
BOCK,Brian C; PÁEZ,Vivian P.
ABSTRACT The citations contained in a recent literature review on the freshwater turtle and tortoise species of Colombia were analyzed. Publishing rates on these species have been increasing exponentially since the 1950s, although many of the publications would not be detected using internet-based literature searches. The most common topics of publications were systematics and phylogeography, nesting ecology, and management. In the 1970s and 1980s, the rate of publishing on the ecology and genetics of Colombian populations lagged behind the rate of publishing on these topics for populations of Colombian freshwater turtle and tortoise species located in other countries, but currently the production of the two regions is comparable. Also, in other countries...

Global environmental change research: empowering developing countries Anais da ABC (AABC)
Nobre,Carlos A.; Lahsen,Myanna; Ometto,Jean P.H.B..
This paper discusses ways to reconcile the United Nations Millennium Development Goals with environmental sustainability at the national and international levels. The authors argue that development and better use of sustainability relevant knowledge is key, and that this requires capacity building globally, and especially in the less developed regions of the world. Also essential is stronger integration of high-quality knowledge creation and technology-and policy-development, including, importantly, the creation of centers of excellence in developing regions which effectively use and produce applications-directed high quality research and bring it to bear on decision making and practices related to environmental change and sustainable management of natural...

Knowledge generation in agricultura research Ciência Rural
Freire,José Roberto de Souza; Santos,Isabel Cristina dos; Sauer,Leandro.
ABSTRACT: Over the past decades, Brazilian agriculture has played an important role in the international market, in response to growing global demand for products, services and food security. This achievement was in a large extent powered by the ability to generate knowledge and the actions promoted by science and technology institutes. This article aims to describe the model of knowledge generation in agriculture, assuming that the knowledge cycle is responsible for the capture, identification, selection and share of informal and formal information, through practices in the workplace and outside it, in personal and institutional networks. Based on a comprehensive literature review, this research deals with a multi-case study on three Brazilian science and...
