Gestão ambiental e democracia: análise crítica, cenários e desafios. Organic Eprints

The Future of Organic Agriculture: Otopia or Oblivion? Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Organic agriculture could feed the world, but will it? A state of Otopia, an organic Utopia of 100% organic food and organic agriculture, is a dream, or is it a pipe-dream? And if a dream, then when might it manifest? Two scenarios are presented, extrapolating from the rate of growth of the organics sector achieved over the past decade. Under a geometric rate of growth, Otopia could be achieved in 39 years, whereas under an arithmetic rate of growth, Otopia would take 544 years to be achieved.

Organic greenhouse horticulture in the Netherlands Organic Eprints
Meijer, Rob.
The total area occupied in the Netherlands by organic horticulture under glass is growing steadily. Several growers convert to this form of horticulture every year and some existing organic growers are expanding their businesses. However, increasing imports from Spain and other south European countries, together with rising costs, means less room for economic development within this sector. The report contains sector information, sector aspirations and current research projects.

New World Map of Organic Agriculture: Australia is 51% Organic Eprints

The latest world map of organic agriculture reveals that Australia has overtaken the rest of the world). The latest global figures report that the world total of certified organic agriculture is 69.8 million hectares from a total of 181 countries. Of that total, Australia accounts for 35.6 million hectares, which is 51% of the world total. Organics data reveal that organic agriculture has been on a steady upward trend for the past two decades. Global organics has grown at 12% pa over the past twenty years, while Australian organics has grown at 16% pa in the same period. For the past five years the growth of organics in Australia has...

Underlying reasons of the controversy over adverse effects of Bt toxins on lady beetle and lacewing larvae Organic Eprints
Hilbeck, Angelika; Meier, Matthias; Trtikova, Miluse.
We outline important underlying reasons that fuel the decades-long controversy over adverse effects of Bt toxins expressed in genetically modified plants on beneficial, nontarget organisms. Inconsistent evaluation standards and asymmetrical levels of scrutiny applied to studies reporting significant adverse effects compared to those finding no adverse effects are described using the examples of the green lacewing (Chrysoperla carnea) and the twospotted lady beetle (Adalia bipunctata). Additionally, the chosen style and concerted nature of the rather confrontational counter study and responses in the lady beetle cases bear striking similarities to other reported examples in the field of biosafety/risk science of genetically modified plants and to other...

Organic poultry and egg production in the Netherlands Organic Eprints
Bestman, Monique.
There are over 1 million organic laying hens in the Netherlands. Organic eggs are in high demand on the domestic market. Dutch organic poultry meat has a small but growing market share. To facilitate organic poultry farmers, Wageningen UR and Louis Bolk Institute carry out a variety of research aimed specifically at organic poultry meat and egg production. Hot topics are the protein content of poultry feed, organic rearing and animal health. The report contains sector facts, sector aspirations, current affairs and research projects.

Knowledge and precaution. On organic farmers' assessment of new technology Organic Eprints
Lassen, Jesper; Oelofse, Myles.
To avoid the risks of conventionalisation and becoming a modified version of conventional farming, organic farming is under a continuous pressure to reinvent itself by adopting new technologies. This article examines the role of precaution in organic farmers’ assessment of potential new technologies, and how farmer’s assessment draws on different types of knowledge. The article further explores how knowledge type compares to the role of knowledge and precaution set forth in the principles of organic farming by the organic movement (IFOAM). Results from a case study of the introduction of sewage sludge as an alternative – and controversial - source of nutrients in organic agriculture are presented. Empirically, this case study builds on the analysis of five...

Welfare benchmarking and herd health plans on organic dairy farms (OF0343) Organic Eprints
Anon,.
Introduction In response to the recommendations of recent studies on the health and welfare of dairy cattle (Whay et al. 2003) and to assist farmers to meet legislative requirements, promoting farm animal welfare and meeting consumer demand, this study investigated, by means of farmer interviews, the effectiveness of herd health and welfare assessment and benchmarking as a farm management tool. The aims of the study were to • offer support to the organic farming sector and provide detail relevant to all dairy farms utilising herd health plans; • provide information to both organic dairy farmers and their veterinary advisors on the most important elements of herd health plans and the benefits of their effective implementation; and • identify the...

Impacts of science-based research and innovation programmes: The case of farmers' transition to organic rice in Camargue Organic Eprints
Quiédeville, Sylvain; Stolze, Matthias; Mouret, Jean-Claude; Barjolle, Dominique.
This paper attempts to assess the Impacts of Science-based Research and Innovation Programme (ISRIP) of farmer’s transition to organic rice in Camargue. We applied a methods-mix revolving around the Impact Pathway Analysis (IPA) with the goal of shedding light on complex mechanisms that occur along innovation processes and reconstructing ex-post the impact pathway of the “basket of innovations” which was identified as main innovation in the theory of change of the programme. The analysis allows identifying the specific role of the research. We demonstrate that INRA contributed to change in supporting growers through experimental trials, discussions and leaflets even though individual farmer’s testing played a more important role to find relevant...
