It is commonly asserted that speculative buying by index funds in commodity futures and over–the–counter derivatives markets created a ‘‘bubble’’ in commodity prices, with the result that prices, and crude oil prices, in particular, far exceeded fundamental values at the peak. The purpose of this paper is to show that the bubble argument simply does not withstand close scrutiny. Four main points are explored. First, the arguments of bubble proponents are conceptually flawed and reflect fundamental and basic misunderstandings of how commodity futures markets actually work. Second, a number of facts about the situation in commodity markets are inconsistent with the existence of a substantial bubble in commodity prices. Third, available statistical evidence... |

This document provides an index and a guide to the activities of the North American Agrifood Market Integration Consortium (NAAMIC) and its predecessor organization the Policy Disputes Information Consortium (PDIC). The first meeting of the group took place in Rio Rico, Arizona in March 1995 and the most recent in Cancun, Mexico in June 2007. Since 1995 the group has held an annual workshop where issues of importance to the three member nations of the NAFTA can be discussed in an open and frank forum. It is one of the few trinational activities where academics, government employees and private sector agents can meet to discuss common problems. The activities of the group are predicated on the belief that unbiased information presented to public and private... |

The EU policy in horticulture has switched its aim from price support to integration of farmers' income. Regulation 2200/96 established the new European Market Regulation (CMO) in horticulture. On this base the producers' organizations (PO) are no longer a political institution but a real economic organization with the objectives of planning and concentrating the production. At the same time, the UE has promulgated another plan (Decision n.2796 of 10/10/96 applying the objectives of the Reg. 2081/93), which is specific for Italian regions in "Objective 1" namely with low average income. This issue establishes the commercial macro organizations with the target of concentrating the supply of the producers' organizations in order to achieve countervailing... |

This paper is aimed at relating income fluctuation with adoptable innovations, adopter category and their access to some variables than those explained in the neoclassical economics principle of labor market demand and supply equilibrium. Using a quantitative and qualitative case study of some farmers in two States, we considered whether respondents are earning enough income and what constraints they face. The von Hipple’s lead user concept and decision model of risk aversion under uncertainty were used to explain causes of variability. Notably, farmers with enough steady income have access to market, various information and are less risk averse. |

Crop genetic resources are the building block of sustainable agricultural development as these can be used to develop crop varieties adaptable to heterogeneous environmental conditions. Nepal is considered the center of origin and diversity for Asian rice, which still has many landraces. However, there has been continuous loss of genetic diversity and concern over it has grown in recent years. The main objective of this paper is to identify the determinants of variety diversity on-farm in the rainfed ecosystem of Nepal by using two-limit Tobit procedure. The diversity on farm appeared to be quite high evaluated based on the number of named varieties grown by the farmers. Majority of the farmers cultivated both modern varieties and landraces simultaneously... |

An analysis of the main items characterizing the agri-food system highlights the existence of a strong demand for a politically-correct decisional process. This paper analyzes the value of the agri-food sector at national level in terms of Gross Domestic Product, Value Added at basic and current prices (ISTAT), comparing data with the EU level (Eurostat). Farms’ structure and production are analyzed in order to highlight the current situation and future development of the agri-food sector. After an overview of the main structural characteristics of farms, the study focuses on a direct survey (FADN/RICA sample): in order to collect specific data an “ad hoc” questionnaire was drawn up to identify farm characteristics, productive potential and main market... |

In recent years there has been a growth in the interest of consumers to buy more locally. An increasing number of farmers are trying to meet the growing demand for locally produced products. Here in New York State, farmers who are direct marketing their product, either direct to consumer or direct to wholesale markets constantly are looking for additional avenues to connect to current customers or grow their customer base. NY MarketMaker is one avenue farmers across New York can utilize to make connections with their customers. This powerhouse database connects buyers, sellers and transportation services and is easily searchable, even for the „technologically‟ challenged. Cornell Cooperative Extension (CUCE) in New York City began this project with the... |

A água é essencial à sobrevivência humana. |

A virtuális vízszemléletre épülő vízkészlet-gazdálkodási döntésekhez szükséges minimális információk egy ország szintjén a következők (Európai Regionális Jelen¬tés, 2009): hol, mikor, mekkora és milyen minőségű hasznosítható vízkészlet áll rendelkezésre, ezeket a vízkészleteket hol és mire használják, mi történik az elhasznált vízzel, mennyi virtuális víz hagyja el az országot az exportált termékek révén, illetve mennyi virtuális víz érkezik az országba az importált termékekkel? Amennyiben ezek az információk hozzáférhetők, úgy további fontos következtetéseket lehet levonni a jövőbeni cselekvési irányokat tekintve, segítve az ország döntéshozóit a fenntarthatóbb vízkészlet-gazdálkodás kialakításában. Ezen túl bizonyos kereskedelempolitikai megfontolások... |

Occurrence of cattle disease known as Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) has caused great fluctuations in production and consumption of beef meat in the European Union. Croatia does not have enough cattle to meet demands of domestic market. However, there is not one case of BSE in cattle reported in Croatia to date. This fact can be used as an advantage on the beef meat market, presupposing that Croatia has implemented quality programs to increase number of cattle. Research results show that 70% of examinees consume beef at least once a week up to several times a month, and 70.5% have not reduced beef consumption after the disease occurred. |
