Effect of harvesting time on seed physiological quality, chemical composition and storability of soybeans Scientia Agricola
Marcos-Filho,J.; Chamma,H.M.C.P.; Casagrande,J.R. R.; Marcos,E.A.; Regitano-d'arce,M.A.B..
Soybeans IAC-8 were harvested in the growth stages R7 and R8 commercial harvesting time and at two other subsequent times to compare their physiological and technological characteristics. Seeds were stored at two moisture levels, 12% and 15%, for 6 months. Germination and vigor (acelerated aging, electrical conductivity), oil and free fatty acids, peroxide and iodine values were evaluated periodically. As expected, the time of harvesting and seed moisture content affected seed performance, while oil content did not correlate to physiological quality as did acidity, peroxide value and iodine number.

Valenti,Wagner C; Mello,Jeanette de T.C. de; Lobão,Vera L.
In this paper, female Macrobrachium carcinus (Linnaeus, 1758) maturation curve, weight/length relationship, length and weight growth curves were studied. Prawns were captured, by traps, in Ribeira de Iguape river (24ºS and 47ºW), southern Brazil. There were used 207 females. It was observed that M. carcinus presents several spawnings during its life cycle and reproductive period goes on, at least till six years old. Weight/length relationship can be represented for the equation W = 8.73 E-3 L3.28. Expressions obtained for length and weight growth curves are Lt = 21 .0 (1-e-0493t) and Wt= 190 (1-e-0493t)3.28. respectively. A symptotic maximum length and asymptotic maximum weight are nearly attained at six and eight years old, respectively.

Panison, Fernando; Sangoi, Luís; Kolling, Daniel Fernando; Coelho, Cileide Maria Medeiros; Durli, Murilo Miguel.
The delay of the maize harvest may cause qualitative and quantitative grain losses. This work evaluated the effects of the harvest time on the agronomic performance of maize hybrids with contrasting growth cycles. The experiment was set in Lages, Santa Catarina State,South Brazil, during the 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 growing seasons. A randomized block design, arranged in split plots was used. Five single-cross hybrids were tested in the main plots: P1630H and P32R22H (hyper-early), P2530 (super early) and P30F53YH and P30R50YH (early). Five harvest times were assessed in the split plots: 0 (grain physiological maturity), 10, 20, 30 and 40 days after physiological maturity. The sowing was performed on 12/5/2012 and 10/5/2013. The percentage of lodged and...

Somatic embryogenesis in Carica papaya as affected by auxins and explants, and morphoanatomical-related aspects Anais da ABC (AABC)
CIPRIANO,JAMILE L.D.; CRUZ,ANA CLÁUDIA F.; MANCINI,KARINA C.; SCHMILDT,EDILSON R.; LOPES,JOSÉ CARLOS; OTONI,WAGNER C.; ALEXANDRE,RODRIGO S..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate somatic embryogenesis in juvenile explants of the THB papaya cultivar. Apical shoots and cotyledonary leaves were inoculated in an induction medium composed of different concentrations of 2,4-D (6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 µM) or 4-CPA (19, 22, 25, 28 and 31 µM). The embryogenic calluses were transferred to a maturation medium for 30 days. Histological analysis were done during the induction and scanning electron microscopy after maturing. For both types of auxin, embryogenesis was achieved at higher frequencies with cotyledonary leaves incubated in induction medium than with apical shoots; except for callogenesis. The early-stage embryos (e.g., globular or heart-shape) predominated. Among the auxins, best results...

Reproductive behavior of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus (Crustacea; Brachyura; Ucididae) BABT
Linhares,Jussiara Candeira Spíndola; Silva,José Roberto Feitosa.
The aim of the present work was to study the reproductive behavior of the mangrove crab (Ucides cordatus) in the estuary of the Igaraçú River (Piauí, Brazil). Courtship and mating were observed in December 2007 and in January-March 2009. The most frequently observed reproductive behavior was the transference of eggs onto the abdomen of the female. Some disputes between males and some copulations were observed. The males mated with more than one female each night and all mating activity occurred at night. The establishment of a closed season coinciding with the mating season represented an effective strategy for the preservation of the species when the socioeconomic situation of the community of gatherers was taken into account.

Recurrent Somatic Embryogenesis and Plantlet Regeneration in Psidium guajava L. BABT
Bajpai,Anju; Kalim,Shahina; Chandra,Ramesh; Kamle,Madhu.
A simple and efficient protocol for recurrent somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration is one of the prerequisites for genetic improvement of guava. An efficient reproducible regeneration somatic embryogenesis protocol was developed in four genotypes of Psidium guajava L. using immature zygotic embryo as starter explant. Somatic embryogenesis induction was obtained on MS basal medium supplemented with 2.0 mgL-1 2, 4-D, 400 mgL-1 L-glutamine, 6% sucrose and 500 mgL-1 Malt extract. Following SE induction different developmental stages of somatic embryos (Globular, heart-shaped, torpedo, cotyledonary) was directly obtained and further recurrent embryogenesis also obtained upon prolonged incubation in induction media. Addition of polyethylene glycol (50...

The influence of water renewal rates on the reproductive and molting cycles of Penaeus paulensis in captivity BABT
Peixoto,Sílvio; Cavalli,Ronaldo Olivera; Wasielesky Junior,Wilson.
The present study analyzed the reproduction of wild-caught Penaeus paulensis in relation to its molt cycle. The experimental design consisted of two treatments (continuous water flow and batch renewal) with two replicates. The stocking density in experimental tanks (1.50 x 0.96m) was approximately 7 animals/m², resulting in 4 males (23.9 ± 2.3 g) and 6 females (52.0 ± 5.5 g) per tank. Shrimp had their uropods cut for individual marking and female maturation was induced through the unilateral eyestalk-ablation. The intermolt period of females and males (17.4 ± 3.2 and 17.8 ± 4.6 days, respectively), number of days between molting and the first spawn (6.9 ± 2.8 days) and number of spawns in the intermolt period (1.4 ± 0.5), presented no significant...

Immunoglobulin production is impaired in protein-deprived mice and can be restored by dietary protein supplementation BJMBR
Amaral,J.F.; Foschetti,D.A.; Assis,F.A.; Menezes,J.S.; Vaz,N.M.; Faria,A.M.C..
Most contacts with food protein and microbiota antigens occur at the level of the gut mucosa. In animal models where this natural stimulation is absent, such as germ-free and antigen-free mice, the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) and systemic immunological activities are underdeveloped. We have shown that food proteins play a critical role in the full development of the immune system. C57BL/6 mice weaned to a diet in which intact proteins are replaced by equivalent amounts of amino acids (Aa diet) have a poorly developed GALT as well as low levels of serum immunoglobulins (total Ig, IgG, and IgA, but not IgM). In the present study, we evaluated whether the introduction of a protein-containing diet in 10 adult Aa-fed C57BL/6 mice could restore their...

Induced maturation of hepatic progenitor cellsin vitro BJMBR
Bi,Y.; He,Y.; Huang,J.Y.; Xu,L.; Tang,N.; He,T.C.; Feng,T..
Hepatic progenitor cells (HPCs) are a potential cell source for liver cell transplantation but do not function like mature liver cells. We sought an effective and reliable method to induce HPC maturation. An immortalized HP14.5 albumin promoter-driven Gaussian luciferase (ALB-GLuc) cell line was established from HPCs isolated from fetal mouse liver of post coitus day 14.5 mice to investigate the effect of induction factors on ALB promoter. HP14.5 parental cells were cultured in DMEM with different combinations of 2% horse serum (HS), 0.1 µM dexamethasone (DEX), 10 ng/mL hepatic growth factor (HGF), and/or 20 ng/mL fibroblast growth factor 4 (FGF4). Trypan blue and crystal violet staining were used to assess cell proliferation with different induction...

Ethylene production and acc oxidase gene expression during fruit ripening of Coffea arabica L. Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Pereira,Luiz Filipe Protasio; Galvão,Rafaelo M.; Kobayashi,Adilson K.; Cação,Sandra Maria B.; Vieira,Luiz Gonzaga Esteves.
The phytohormone ethylene is involved in several physiological and developmental processes in higher plants, including ripening of fruits, abscission of organs and tissues, senescence, wound response as well as in other abiotic stresses. The enzyme 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase (ACO) catalyzes the last step of ethylene biosynthesis. The production of ethylene and the expression of a Coffea arabica ACO gene during the last stages of fruit maturation were investigated. A rapid increase of ethylene production at the green-yellow stage of fruit ripening, after the end of endosperm formation, and a decrease of ethylene production at the cherry stage indicates a climacteric phase during ripening. An ACC oxidase (Ca-ACO) from coffee fruit cDNA was...

Effect of Californian Red Worm (Eisenia foetida) on the Nutrient Dynamics of a Mixture of Semicomposted Materials Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Castillo,Hugo; Hernández,Adriana; Dominguez,David; Ojeda,Damaris.
The efficiency of composting processes with and without the addition of Californian red worms (Eisenia foetida) was evaluated, using manure of dairy cows to generate organic fertilizer. Several parameters were assessed as physio-chemical indicators of maturity, such as temperature, pH, C/N ratio, phytotoxicity and macro and micronutrients at 25 and 54 ws (mature and stored products, respectively). A linear model was used in the statistical analysis, with four replicates that included as fixed effects, the composting systems and time. At 25 wk, both systems reduced the C/N ratio to values of 15.5 in vermicompost and 17.1 in semi-compost. The content of total N, N-NO3, Ca and some micronutrients also increased. K and Na concentrations were higher in the...

Endogenous Quantification of Abscisic Acid and Indole-3-Acetic Acid in Somatic and Zigotic Embryos of Nothofagus alpina (Poepp. & Endl.) Oerst Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Cartes Riquelme,Pricila; Ríos Leal,Darcy; Sáez Carrillo,Kátia; Uribe Moraga,Matilde; Valenzuela Aguilar,Sofía; Joseph Bolus,Stephen; Sánchez Olate,Manuel.
Abscisic acid (ABA) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) participate in the propagation of plants by somatic embryogenesis, causing polar structural differentiation of the embryo. The goal of the assay was to compare endogenous levels of ABA and IAA between somatic embryos (SE) and zygotic embryos (ZE) of Nothofagus alpina (Poepp. & Endl.) Oerst. In this study, a somatic embryo maturation assay involving the addition of varying concentrations of exogenous ABA was performed on cotyledonary-stage of N. alpina. Furthermore, the endogenous levels of ABA and IAA were quantified in the immature ZE, the mature ZE, and the embryonic axis of a mature embryo of N. alpina. The current study utilized high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for quantification....

Rosa,Paulo Roberto Antunes da; Bohrer,Rodrigo Camponogara; Ludke,Charles Alencar; Cesaro,Matheus Pedroti De; Pereira,Gabriel Ribas; Mondadori,Rafael Gianela; Antoniazzi,Alfredo Quites; Gonçalves,Paulo Bayard Dias.
The objective of this study was to investigate the mRNA expression and protein localization of Grb10 gene in bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) from different follicle sizes. Firstly, it was investigated the mRNA expression to correlate with maturation rates. COCs from follicles at 1-3, 4-6, 6-8 and >8mm were used to evaluate Grb10 gene expression by qRT-PCR assay and nuclear maturation rates. It was observed that more competent oocytes (from follicles at 6-8 and >8mm; P>0.05), had lower Grb10 mRNA expression levels when compared to the oocytes from follicles at 1-3 and 4-6mm (P>0.05). After it was performed an immunofluorescence analysis in COCs from different follicle sizes (1-3, 4-6, 6-8 and >8mm) to investigate...
