Measuring food security: Definitional sensitivity and implications 31
Bashir, Muhammad Khalid; Schilizzi, Steven.
Six methods for measuring food security are identified from the literature. The dietary intake method (DIM) and the food insecurity experienced-based measurement scales (FIEMS), the two most commonly used, were empirically tested using 1152 rural households in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Results show significant differences in the measurement of food insecure households: 22.9% with DIM vs. 4.7% with FIEMS. A slight change in the food security definition resulted in significant differences. With slight definitional changes, 6.5% of the sample households appeared food insecure using DIM and only 1.1% using FIEMS. Given its high definitional sensitivity, food security must be carefully defined according to country specific conditions and should reflect...

If services aren't delivered, people won't pay: the role of measurement problems and monitoring in Payments for Environmental Services 31
Meijerink, Gerdien W..
The idea of Payments for environmental services (PES) has an appealing simplicity, which may explain the success of the concept. However, successful projects are far limited though and two constraints have been identified in literature. The first is limited demand: too few service users are so confident about the mechanism that they are willing to pay. The second obstacle is poor knowledge on the institutional requirements entailing incentive and livelihood mechanisms which so far have received comparatively less attention. This paper focuses on both constraints by arguing that monitoring effectiveness and conditionality of PES schemes are crucial and that institutional arrangements for monitoring should be in place. By analysing in a systematic way what...

Morphometry of eggs and immatures of Culex (Culex) saltanensis Dyar (Diptera, Culicidae) obtained in the laboratory and on the field 104
Zequi,João A. C.; Lopes,José.
The objectives of this morphometric study of Culex (Culex) saltanensis Dyar, 1928 larvae were to observe the continuous growth of siphon and cephalic capsule length and width in each instar, and to propose a linear equation to differentiate instars according to the size of both structures. Larvae obtained in laboratory at 27 ± 1ºC, photoperiod 14L:12D were studied. Larvae of the forth instar were collected on the field and compared with same instar larvae reared in the laboratory. Egg size and pigmentation pattern, first instar continuous growth, and differentiation of larval stages measurements were studied. Egg pigmentation patterns and the shapes of raft eggs differentiated specimens of C. saltanensis from Culex (Culex) quinquefasciatus Say, 1823 found...

Hygiene of environmental surfaces in a cattle barn 111
Kymäläinen, Hanna-Riitta; Kuisma, Risto.
Microbiological dipslides are widely used e.g. in food production facilities for HACCP (hazard analysis & critical control points) measurements and hygiene monitoring surveys, as well as for other cleanability studies.  In this study the suitability of microbiological dipslide methods to measure the hygiene level of the environmental surfaces in a cattle barn was tested.  A total of 1112 measurements were carried out during five measurement days.  When evaluating the rooms by combining the results of the individual sampling sites and different dipslide types (total microbes, enterobacteria and β-glucuronidase-positive organisms, yeasts and moulds), the corridor and personnel rooms had the highest hygiene status.  The office and personnel kitchen and...

Measurement of volatilized mercury by a mini-system: a simple, reliable and reproducible technique 52
Cursino,Luciana; Mattos,Silvânia V. M.; Silva,Nilton O.; Chartone-Souza,Edmar; Nascimento,Andréa M. A..
A simple and easy new technique for volatilized mercury determination in biological systems was developed. This technique is fast and sensitive and can overcome the problems that arise due to the extremely low readings during the measurements and reproducibility in biological material (bacteria). It measures directly the volatilized metallic mercury of bacteria by means of a chemical adsorbent in a coupled mini-system, as a modified technique for mercury in air analysis. It is potentially of interest to the bioremediation and bacterial mercury resistance communities

Influence of the temperature, pressure and viscosity on the oil measurement with turbine type measurers 52
Damasceno,Magalí Araújo; Penha,Janaina Karla de Medeiros; Silva Junior,Nivaldo Ferreira da; Felipe,Raimundo Nonato B.; Felipe,Renata Carla Tavares dos Santos; Medeiros,Gilson Gomes de.
The flow measurement of liquids and gases is a necessity in many industrial applications. There is a great amount of measurers for such purpose, as, for example, the coriolis, positive displacement and type turbine measurers. A measurer sufficiently used for the oil flow measurement is the turbine type, because it uses the proper extracted energy of the measured flow for its functioning, moreover is also used as standard for the calibration of other measurers. For this reason, it is important to study the parameters that influence the measurement process for turbine measurers. In Brazil, to measure the volume of oil, regardless the type of measurer, it is necessary to observe "Portaria Conjunta Nº. 1", of June 19, 2000, that approved the Technical...

Patch-clamp detection of macromolecular translocation along nuclear pores 56
Bustamante,J.O.; Varanda,W.A..
The present paper reviews the application of patch-clamp principles to the detection and measurement of macromolecular translocation along the nuclear pores. We demonstrate that the tight-seal 'gigaseal' between the pipette tip and the nuclear membrane is possible in the presence of fully operational nuclear pores. We show that the ability to form a gigaseal in nucleus-attached configurations does not mean that only the activity of channels from the outer membrane of the nuclear envelope can be detected. Instead, we show that, in the presence of fully operational nuclear pores, it is likely that the large-conductance ion channel activity recorded derives from the nuclear pores. We conclude the technical section with the suggestion that the best way to...
