The uncertainty in age estimation by otolith reading may be at the root of the large variability in red mullet (Mullus barbatus) growth models in the Mediterranean. In the MEDITS survey, red mullet age data are produced following the same sampling protocol and otolith reading methodology. However, ageing is assigned using different interpretation schemes, including variations in theoretical birthdate and number of false rings considered, in addition to differences in the experience level of readers. The present work analysed the influence of these variations and the geographical location of sampling on red mullet ageing using a multivariate approach (principal component analysis). Reader experience was the most important parameter correlated with the...

Organic matter isotopes reveal enhanced rainfall activity in Northwestern Mediterranean borderland during warm substages of the last 200 kyr ArchiMer
Pasquier, Virgil; Toucanne, Samuel; Sansjofre, Pierre; Dixit, Yama; Revillon, Sidonie; Mokeddem, Zohra; Rabineau, Marina.
In this study we use bulk sediment organic matter stable isotopes (δ13Corg and δ15N) to examine the nature and timing of preserved organic matter in borehole PRGL1-4 from Northwestern Mediterranean Sea. This region is known as a transitional zone between the North Atlantic atmospheric circulation and the North African monsoon system. In the Gulf of Lion (SE France), increased inputs of organic matter from sediment-laden rivers occurred during warm substages of the last 200 kyr (MIS 5e, 5c, and 5a; MIS 6d, and 6b). Increased terrestrial organic matter are inferred from organic carbon isotopic composition (δ13Corg), and are interpreted as resulting from enhanced rainfall over the Rhone river catchment area. Such increase in terrestrial organic carbon induced...

Trace metal concentrations in the North-western Mediterranean atmospheric aerosol between 1986 and 2008: Seasonal patterns and decadal trends ArchiMer
Heimbuerger, Lars-eric; Migon, Christophe; Dufour, Aurelie; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Cossa, Daniel.
Climatic and anthropogenic changes are able to engender modifications in the aerosol composition at different geographical and temporal scales The present study addresses this question for the trace metal concentrations (TM = Al, Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn) of aerosol from the North-western Mediterranean coast of France (Cap Ferrat, nearby Nice) between 1986 and 2008. From seasonal variations (2006-08) and decadal trends (1986-2008) of TM concentrations. three groups of elements can be distinguished They consist of different aerosol sources: crustal-derived elements (Al, Fe. Mn and Co), trace metals of anthropogenic origin (Pb, Cd and Zn) and a third, intermediate, group of trace metals that presented both anthropogenic and natural/crustal...

Production primaire et activité bactérienne en eutrophisation expérimentale (lagune du Brusc - Automne 1977) ArchiMer
Cahet, G.; Martin, Y..
An experimental eutrophication carried out with several technics on mediterranean sea water (Embiez) in autumn shows : - significant variations in the electro-chemical composition of phytoplanktonic excretion; complex organic substances are excreted during two different periods, especially after the Skeletonema costatum bloom; - close relations between heterotrophy (l4C glucose test) and excretion of organic matter by photosynthetic organisms, glucids are always predominant; - the original heterotrophy from the 14c pyruvate test; which is obviously more selective than the 14c glucose test; - the existence of different periods of active ultraplankton.

Vingt ans d’aquaculture en Afrique du Nord : évolutions, bilan critique et avenir ArchiMer
Kara, Mohamed Hichem; Lacroix, Denis; Sadek, Sherif; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Rey-valette, Helene; Kraiem, Mejdeddine.
This paper presents the evolution of aquaculture in North Africa during the 20 last years, and the assets and bottlenecks for each country. This work uses the results of the European project Aquamed (2011-2013). The analysis of the evolutions of this sector, including research and development allows to establish a diagnosis on the strengths and the weaknesses in the four countries (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt). The retrospective analysis helps in identifying solutions for a more sustainable development. It also contributes to select priorities for action in a long-term vision (2035). This double overview, on the past and the future, should help decision-makers and experts to identify the best politics for a sector, which has a high potential in the...

Lateglacial and Holocene climate and environmental change in the northeastern Mediterranean region: diatom evidence from Lake Dojran (Republic of Macedonia/Greece) ArchiMer
Zhang, Xiaosen; Reed, Jane; Wagner, Bernd; Francke, Alexander; Levkov, Zlatko.
The juncture between the west-east and north-south contrasting Holocene climatic domains across the Mediterranean is complex and poorly understood. Diatom analysis of Lake Dojran (Republic of Macedonia/Greece) provides a new insight into lake levels and trophic status during the Lateglacial and Holocene periods in the northeastern Mediterranean. Following a very shallow or even desiccated state at the core base at ca. 12,500 cal yr BP, indicated by sedimentological and hydro-acoustic data, diatoms indicate lake infilling, from a shallow state with abundant benthos to a plankton-dominated relatively high lake level and eutrophic state thereafter. Diatom-inferred shallowing between ca. 12,400-12,000 cal yr BP and a very low lake level and eutrophic,...

A sampling strategy and methodology for assessment and monitoring of Mediterranean small-scale fisheries ArchiMer
Farrugio, Henri; Le Corre, Gildas.
In order to reach a quantitative assessment of the Mediterranean small-scale fisheries one of the main problems is to evaluate in space and time the elementary fishing efforts and yields of every component and their corresponding variations. These elements are essential for the evaluation of global production and fishing effort, the monitoring of which is of paramount interest for the study of the fisheries and exploited resource dynamics. This paper presents a methodology based on the statistical principles of so-called "stratified random sampling" which we have developed in an attempt to solve this problem. The collection of data is achieved in the field by a team of investigators which operates within a space-time stratification of the study area. The...

A new contribution to the Late Quaternary tephrostratigraphy of the Mediterranean: Aegean Sea core LC21 ArchiMer
Satow, C.; Tomlinson, E. L.; Grant, K. M.; Albert, P. G.; Smith, V. C.; Manning, C. J.; Ottolini, L.; Wulf, S.; Rohling, E. J.; Lowe, J. J.; Blockley, S. P. E.; Menzies, M. A..
Tephra layers preserved in marine sediments can contribute to the reconstruction of volcanic histories and potentially act as stratigraphic isochrons to link together environmental records. Recent developments in the detection of volcanic ash (tephra) at levels where none is macroscopically visible (so-called ‘crypto-tephra’) have greatly enhanced the potential of tephrostratigraphy for synchronising environmental and archaeological records by expanding the areas over which tephras are found. In this paper, crypto-tephra extraction techniques allow the recovery of 8 non-visible tephra layers to add to the 9 visible layers in a marine sediment core (LC21) from the SE Aegean Sea to form the longest, single core record of volcanic activity in the Aegean Sea....

Results of the 2003 observer program on board the French purse seiner targeting Atlantic bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean sea ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc; Farrugio, Henri.
In 2003, IFREMER implemented an observer program on board of the French purse seiner targeting bluefin tuna (BFT) in the Mediterranean Sea to collect the size composition of catches. The protocol and the sampling design were established by IFREMER and the operations were carried out by two independent scientific observers (each one following a given boat over two distinguished fishing seasons). The 788 BFT measured by the two observers during the ~ 190 fishing days were mostly small/juveniles fish and solely represented 2.7% of the total catches. The sampling appears largely insufficient to be representative of this fleet and was furthermore strongly biased (big BFT being under-sampled). From our viewpoint, the implementation of a joint observer program on...

New species in mediterranean aquaculture: is it an answer to the market demand for differentiated products ? ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe.
Mediterranean aquaculture development is now at a crossroads. The production of seabass and seabream has been increasing at a smart and constant pace for the last ten years. Nevertheless, it is still far behind the Northern European salmonid industry in terms of level of production, reduction of production costs and market internationalisation. Meanwhile, an in depth transformation of market conditions is ongoing in Europe which remains the main target market for Mediterranean aquaculture products. The most important issues are the soaring role of supermarkets in the distribution chain, the development of new processing techniques like pre-packed fresh fish, the growing importance of catering and the evolution of the consumer behaviour. Seafood consumer...

Organic and inorganic human-induced contamination of Posidonia oceanica meadows ArchiMer
Pergent, Gerard; Labbe, Celine; Lafabrie, Celine; Kantin, Roger; Pergent-martini, Christine.
In coastal environments, plants are used for phytoremediation of contamination. Organic and inorganic contaminants may be due to natural and/or anthropogenic sources. The aim of this study is to compare inorganic (trace metal) and organic (PAH) contamination in Posidonia oceanica and to analyse the relationship between these types of pollutants indeed very few studies have been interested in their correlations and common sources. P. oceanica leaves were collected in two sites exhibiting different levels of human-induced pressure. Higher values were recorded in the more polluted site (Toulon) for trace metals (Ag, Hg, Pb) as well as for PAHs (Medium Molecular Weight and High Molecular Weight) due to the presence of the city and/or harbour in proximity. Offshore mollusc production in the Mediterranean basin ArchiMer
Danioux, Christian; Bompais, Xavier; Paquotte, Philippe; Loste, Claudine.
In the Mediterranean basin, offshore mollusc production takes place mainly in France and Italy. Its recent development stems from the limited potential of lagoons and ponds, and centres mainly on mussel production. Suspension culture technologies are described and compared with those used in the Atlantic. Some information is given on the production systems and a short economic study demonstrates the profitability of these shellfish farming activities, in spite of the many risks involved and their relatively low profit margins.

Rapport sur l'exercice de la pêche dans la zone côtière de la France ArchiMer
Bolopion, Jacques; Forest, Andre; Sourd, Louis-julien.
The maritime fisheries and mariculture guidance law passed in 1997 specifies that with the perspective of renegotiation of the common fisheries policy in 2002, a report on the special conditions of inshore fisheries be drawn up by the Government. To do so, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries entrusted this task to three experts, who are the authors of this report. In accordance with their remit, the situation of fisheries in territorial waters and estuaries of metropolitan France and the four DOM overseas departments ( counties) was examined, in the framework of meetings with professional fishermen, administrations, elected officials and scientific organisations. The first part situates fishing activities in coastal areas within the overall context...

Bilan de l'état zoosanitaire des mollusques en Méditerranée française : 1988-2001 ArchiMer
Pichot, Yves.
The fact that molluscs from the Mediterranean have benefited from a privileged zoosanitary condition compared to those of the other French coasts has for a long time limited the control of farms and natural fields in this area. It is only in the early 70's, because of the pathological problems and risks observed in other areas that Mediterranean molluscs started to be stictly under zoosanitory control. This control was however limited until the early 90's. With the implementation of the European directives 91/67 and 95/70 for the protection of molluscs against diseases and their propagation, with the creation in 1992 of REPAMO- IFREMER (with a watch unit in the Mediterranean), the control of molluscs in the Mediterranean has considerably improved. The seasonal dynamics of nutrient and chlorophyll a concentrations on the SE Mediterranean shelf-slope ArchiMer
Herut, Barak; Almogi-labin, Ahuva; Jannink, Natasja; Gertman, Isaac.
We report the results of a sequence of twelve research cruises over a two-year period, from June 1996 through May 1998 that examined the seasonal variations in the nutrient (NO(3)(-) PO(4)(3-), and Si(OH)(4)) and in the chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations at two permanent stations across the SE Mediterranean continental shelf and slope (120 and 400 m water depth off the Israeli coast). Seasonally-dependent Chl a concentrations ranged between 0.003 and 0.415 mg m(-3). Following autumn and winter a distinct biomass phytoplankton peak was produced (similar to 30 mg Chl a m(-2) in the upper 120 m) and a subsequent moderate spring peak was observed. In the decomposition zone (120-400 m), an opposite pattern was observed with decreasing amounts of NO(3)(-) and...

The common mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis was selected as unique biomonitor species to implement a regional monitoring programme, the CIESM Mediterranean Mussel Watch (MMW), in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. As of today, and upon standardization of the methodological approach, the MMW Network has been able to quantify Cs-137 levels in mussels from 60 coastal stations and to produce the first distribution map of this artificial radionuclide at the scale of the entire Mediterranean and Black Seas. While: measured Cs-137 levels were found to be very low (usually <1 Bq kg(-1) wet wt) Cs-137 activity concentrations in the Black Sea and North Aegean Sea were up to two orders of magnitude higher than those in the western Mediterranean Basin. Such effects,...

Lagune de Salses-Leucate. II.- Contamination bactériologique et approche physico-chimique ArchiMer
Ladagnous, Helene; Le Bec, Claude.

The Gulf of Lion margin has been created by an Oligo-Aquitanian rifting followed by oceanic accretion in the Provencal basin during the Burdigalian. Two main periods have been detailed in this thesis: • The Messinian event that needs to be differentiated from earlier strata deposition. The event also represents a clear marker (between 7 and 5,3 Ma) within the history of the basin. • The initial period of margin formation, from the beginning of continental extension (35-30 Ma) to oceanisation (around 20 Ma) The database for this study has been built using all available data (seismic and wells from industry) on the shelf, the slope and the deep basin of the Gulf of Lion. The gathering of this huge database occurred in the framework of the French GDRMarges...

Messinian erosional and salinity crises: View from the Provence Basin (Gulf of Lions, Western Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Bache, Francois; Olivet, Jean-louis; Gorini, Christian; Rabineau, Marina; Baztan, Juan; Aslanian, Daniel; Suc, Jean-pierre.
Though the late Miocene "Messinian Salinity Crisis" has been intensely researched along the circum-Mediterranean basins, few studies have focused on the central part of the Mediterranean Basin and, especially, the pre-salt deposits. To improve our knowledge of the Messinian events, it is imperative to better understand this domain. In this study, we provide a more complete understanding of this central domain in the Provence Basin. We were able to recognize: a) thick marine detrital series (up to 1000 m) derived from the Messinian subaerial erosion which is partly prolongated in the distal part by b) a thick unit of deep marine deposits (up to 800 m) prior to the evaporites; c) a thick presumed alternation of detritals and evaporites (1500 m) below the...
