Instructions to the Marine Meteorological Observers, 7th Edition. OceanDocs
The ocean meteorological program of the Weather Bureau has two separate and distinct parts. First, there is the daily service by radio. Owing to the need for brevity, the radio reports contain a limited amount of essential information. The daily weather reports from ships and islands reveal the conditions over the ocean; when assembled on a map, including continental reports, they give a picture of weather conditions existing momentarily over a large region. A collection of observations is immediately returned to the mariner by radio broadcast so that he may draw his own weather map on shipboard. By this process, the weather at the earth's surface is mapped and much can be inferred as to conditions above the surface. Formation and movement of storms are...

Pineda, S.E.; Aubone, A.; Brunetti, N.E..
Beaks of Loliginid squids have very similar morphological features making identification of the species to be quite difficult. A new metodology to identify species from the relative growth of some parts of the beak is presented. Samples of Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensiswere obtained from ten reserch cruises of RVS "Dr. Holmberg" and "Captain Oca Balda" and eight commercial landings at Mar del Plata Port during the period 1992-1993. The results obtained using the new metodology (Metric Discriminant Criterium)were compared with those resulting from the application of the Fisher's Lineal Discriminant Criterium. Both mantle length - rostral length and total weight - rostral length relationships, corresponding to each species were fitted. Either upper or...

Instructions to the Marine Meteorological Observers of the U. S. Weather Bureau, 4th edition. OceanDocs
The ocean meteorological program of the Weather Bureau calls in general for the making of but one regular observation a day, this, as well known, being made at noon G.M.T. (civil). However, in certain designated areas from which observations are transmitted by radiotelegraphy an additional regular observation is provided for at Greenwich midnight. Supplementing these regular observations are extra ones made under conditions of threatening or severe weather, gale and storm reports, and descriptive notes of weather experienced between observations, the last- named taking the form of a Daily Journal. The total requirements are such, however, as to make the smallest possible demands on observers consistent with the needs of the Bureau in me ting its...

Chauvelon, P.; Bach, P..
The age study of fishes using daily growth increments DGI observations is made from: 1- either the exhaustive determination of increments, 2- or the calculation of daily growth increments density for different otolith zones between the nucleus and the margin edge of otolith, the width of increments being presumed constant for each zone. To apply the first method, increments may be readable individually from the nucleus to the margin edge of otolith. This is a very time consuming operation. It can cause miscalculation of increments and errors of the age estimation. The second method, called "DGI density method" is based on the decrease of the increment width in relation to the slowing down of the growth phenomena. The more used approach according to this...

Bonamia sp. (Protozoa, Haplosporidia) parásito de Ostrea puelchana D’Orbigny, (Mollusca, Bivalvia) en el Golfo San Matías (Patagonia Argentina): Histopatología, identificación e infección OceanDocs
Kroeck, M.A..

Bach, P.; Chauvelon, P..
Daily growth increments (DGI) density - otolith radius relationship according to the von Bertanlanffy's growth model: application to Lutjanus sebae (Cuvier, 1828) in Seychelles. Often, age determination of fishes is conducted from several parts (scales and otoliths for teleost fishes, vertebrae, spine, opercular bones, ...) displaying seasonal marks (annuli) associated with growth checks, which can be used for the estimation of individual age. Since Panella's (1971, 1974) discovery of the daily growth increments (DGI) in the teleost otoliths, age determination with DGI method has been used more and more on larval stages of both temperate and tropical species and juvenile and adult individuals of, principally, snapper and grouper species. The age study of...

Manual of Marine Meteorological Observations, Tenth edition. OceanDocs
The Conference of Brussels, called in 1853, was the first International Maritime Conference ever held. It sponsored the idea that governments should foster systematic weather observations on ships, and should prepare and publish charts of the prevailing winds, ocean currents, average sea and air temperatures, and tracks of dangerous storms based on the additional data. With the introduction of radio and fast ships, weather information became of vital importance to safe and efficient ship operation. Many countries began regularly scheduled weather forecasts to ships in nearby waters. Today, weather forecasts as well as charts are prepared from data collected through ship observations. Forecasts of weather and sea conditions arc prepared for ship operation,...

Instructions to the Marine Meteorological Observers of the U. S. Weather Bureau, 2nd edition. OceanDocs
Heiskell, Henry L..
The form of Weather Report at present issued to vessels by the U. S. Weather Bureau is a slight modification of that devised by the U. S. Signal Service for the purpose of its series of International Simultaneous Meteorological Observations, covering the period 1878-1887, which form in its turn superseded the once well-known Meteorological Journal. The last-mentioned form of record, which went into effect in 1876, and which was in many respects identical with that recommended by the Maritime Conference held at Brussels in 1853, contemplated that the various meteorological observations should be entered at the end of every two hours throughout the twenty-four, or a total of twelve sets of observations a day. The new form demanded, in place of this series, a...

Malaspina, A.M.; Pérez, A.; Moreno, V.J.; Bastida, R.O.; Aizpun, J.E..
Samples of seventeen different tissues of one specimen of the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops gephyreus, caught accidentally in waters adjacent to Mar del Plata by local fishermen (38°00'S; 57°20'W), were analyzed for total mercury distribution. The analytical procedure employed for total mercury involved a wet acid digestion followed by flameless atomic absorption. The method was based essentially on the one proposed by Armstrong and Uthe (1971).

Bouriga, N.; Selmi, S.; Faure, E.; Trabelsi, M..

Barrat, A.; Camba, N..
Samples of Dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) were analysed for histamine content using the method of Lerke A. Peter, Porcuna N. Martina and Chin B. Henry (1978) with modifications. The samples were previously exposed at room temperature for 18 hours in order to increase their histamine content. Dilutions of 3,4 and 5 mg/ml of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The present modification improves the Lerke, et. al. (op.cit.) methodology and makes it easy to use in the laboratory and in the field.

Effectiveness of a Cuban marine protected area in meeting multiple management objectives OceanDocs
Angulo-Valdés, J. A..
In this work the management effectiveness of a Cuban MPA is assessed using an interdisciplinary approach. A series of three hypotheses are tested to determine how effective the Punta Frances Marine Protected Area (PFMPA) has been in meeting the multiple objectives of conserving biological diversity and ecological integrity, while allowing for the development of economic opportunities for tourism, and satisfying the needs of local and distant human populations. A new typology of benefits derived from MPAs was produced to provide managers with a practical tool that enable them to: 1) identify the benefits at the early stages of MPA creation, 2) state MPA objectives in a clear and measurable way, 3) assess the effectiveness of their MPA in meeting...
