The aerobic bacterial flora in the gut of turbot larvae and their influence on larval survival was examined. Two turbot experiments were run with six replicates each time. Large variation, from 0% up to 44%, was observed in the survival percentage of turbot larvae. There was no correlation between the number of bacteria present in the gut of turbot larvae and the larval survival rate. During both experiments, all replicates followed nearly the same rate of bacterial development in the gut of turbot larvae going from circa 102 CFU larva-1 just before first feeding at day 3 post hatch to 105 CFU larva-1 at day 9 post hatch. In total, 127 bacterial isolates from 12... |

Compaction is one of the most destructive factors of soil quality, however the effects on the microbial community and enzyme activity have not been investigated in detail so far. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of soil compaction caused by the traffic of agricultural machines on the soil microbial community and its enzyme activity. Six compaction levels were induced by tractors with different weights driving over a Eutrustox soil and the final density was measured. Soil samples were collected after corn from the layers 0-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m. The compaction effect on all studied properties was evident. Total bacteria counts were reduced significantly (by 22-30 %) and by 38-41 % of nitrifying bacteria in the soil with highest bulk... |

Ants inhabit several types of natural and urban habitats, where they successfully nest. In urban environments, the hospitals should be considered priority for studies, as ants pose risks to human health due to their pathogen carrying potential. We aimed at surveying the literature about studies on ants in hospital settings in Brazil in the past 20 years. We found 40 papers in 22 journals, the first one published in 1993. Among them, 26 papers assessed pathogenic microorganisms on ants. We recorded 59 ant species, being Tapinoma melanocephalumthe most common. The Minas Gerais and São Paulo states had the largest number of published papers. Mato Grosso do Sul and Rio Grande do Sul showed the highest number of species. Exotic ant species were recorded in all... |

Abstract The physicochemical and microbiological dynamics during the fermentation phase of the CCN51 cocoa material was evaluated in three maturity stages (stage 2: 130-152 days after anthesis (DAA), stage 3: 153-174 DAA, and stage 4: 175-196 DAA). Through the microfermentation technique, the physicochemical variables (pH, titratable acidity, total soluble solids, and fermentation index) were monitored every 24 hours. The microbiological dynamics were evaluated by counting the colony forming units (CFU) in a plaque, quantifying three types of microorganisms (Bacillus, acetic acid bacteria and yeasts). In the three maturity stages assessed, a decrease in the pH of the beans was observed as the fermentation progressed; between 72 and 96 hours after... |

The objective of this study was to estimate the dehydration curve and occurrence of fungi and mycotoxins in Tifton 85 hay. The experimental design was randomized blocks in split plots with four replications and five levels of nitrogen (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 kg ha-1) in the form of urea, two regrowth ages (28 and 35 days) and drying hay in the sun and in shed. After harvesting, the grass was sampled four times (0, 8, 23 and 32 hours) to dry in the sun and twelve times (0, 3, 18, 27, 42, 51, 66, 75, 90, 99, 114 and 123 hours) for drying in shed, turned over daily. The fungi were identified after seeding and growth in three steps of haymaking (cutting, baling and after 30 days of storage). To verify the presence of mycotoxins, 20 samples, composed of hay... |

Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland that causes severe economic losses due to reduced milk production, expence on pharmaceuticals, veterinary care, discarding of milk after treatment and discarding of affected animals. This inflammatory process may have distinct origins, but all cases of economic importance are caused by microorganisms. According to their origin and means of transmission, the main etiological agents were put together in two groups, contagious microorganisms (Streptococcus agalactiae, Staphylococcus sp, e Corynebacterium bovis) transmitted mainly during rnilking and environmental microorganisms (Streptococcus uberis, Enterobacteriaceae, fungos, algae of the genus Prototheca, etc.).Clinical mastitis is characterized by visible... |

The use of mulching is an alternative to control weeds but there are few studies on its effect on soil quality. In this sense, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of types of mulching on the attributes of microbial carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in a Typic Hapludox with production of integrated apples in southern Brazil. The experiment was conducted in randomized blocks in the Vacaria, state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The soil mulch types studied were: pine needle, sawdust, black plastic and a control. The soil samples were collected in February (summer) and August (winter) of 2006, and the attributes related to total organic and microbial carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus were determined. Organic mulchings (pine needle and sawdust) promoted... |
