Systematic notes on Asian birds. 27. On the dates of publication of John Gould’s “A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains” Naturalis
McAllen, I.A.W.; Bruce, M.D..
John Gould’s “A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains” (1830-1833), one of the first works to illustrate birds from the Indian subcontinent, has had a confused publication history. New information in Gould’s correspondence and contemporary reviews has enabled the timing of publication of the separate parts to be determined. Gould’s work was intended to illustrate new birds described in a series of six papers by Nicholas Vigors in the “Proceedings of the Committee of Science and Correspondence of the Zoological Society of London” (1831-1832). Although Vigors’s papers are usually accepted as the source of the 73 new names, 26 were first published in Gould’s work.

The subjective nature of Linnaean categories and its impact in evolutionary biology and biodiversity studies Naturalis
Laurin, M..
Absolute (Linnaean) ranks are essential to rank-based nomenclature (RN), which has been used by the vast majority of systematists for the last 150 years. They are widely recognized as being subjective among taxonomists, but not necessarily in other fields. For this reason, phylogenetic nomenclature (PN) and other alternative nomenclatural systems have been developed. However, reluctance to accept alternative nomenclatural systems and continued use of higher taxa of a given Linnaean category in comparative analyses presumably reflect a lack of appreciation of the deleterious effects of the subjective nature of Linnaean categories in other biological fields, such as conservation and evolutionary biology. To make that point clearer, evolutionary models under...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 7. Black-naped oriole Oriolus chinensis Linnaeus, 1766: some old nomenclatural issues explained Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C..
Any exploration of the development of our knowledge of the distribution and nomenclature of the black-naped oriole produces a bewildering complex of names. It is the more complex because the origin of the specimen named Oriolus chinensis Linnaeus, 1766, was disputed. When it was proposed that the origin might be the Philippines this at first seemed to affect the nomenclature in India but not China. A new name then introduced proved to be preoccupied by one that rested on a description that seemed too flawed to be applicable. When it was finally determined that the Chinese breeding population needed a new name, and that this was the form that reached eastern parts of India as a migrant, the name changes proposed met such resistance that for nearly 60 years...

The early specimens of the potto Perodicticus potto (Statius Müller, 1776) in the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, with the selection of a neotype Naturalis
Smeenk, C.; Godfrey, L.R.; Williams, F.L..
The potto was first recorded and figured by Willem Bosman in 1704. The name Lemur potto Statius Müller, 1776 is exclusively based upon Bosman’s account and figure, which are reproduced in full. The type locality is Elmina on the Gold Coast, the present Ghana. No type specimen was collected. The early pottos in the Leiden Museum are listed and their history is given, with special reference to the animals obtained by H.S. Pel. The publications on this material are reviewed. An adult female, RMNH 39375: mounted skin and skeleton acquired by Pel in 1849 at Dabocrom (Dabo Krom) near Sekondi, coastal Ghana, is designated the neotype of Lemur potto Statius Müller, 1776. The neotype is extensively described and figured. Taxonomic notes on the putative (sub)species...

Type specimens of Pectinidae (Bivalvia) described by Ignaz von Born Naturalis
Dijkstra, H.H..
Born described in two publications (1778, 1780) the molluscs in the collection of Empress Maria Theresa (1717-1780), now in the Natural History Museum at Vienna. In this paper the Pectinidae type material is described. Ten new species were introduced of which Argopecten nucleus (Born, 1778) and Minnivola pyxidata (Born, 1778) are valid taxa. The remaining eight names are junior or senior synonyms and there is also a nomen inquirendum.

Studies on the Streptaxidae (Mollusca, Gastropoda Pulmonata) of Malawi 8. A revision of ‘Marconia’ hamiltoni (Smith), the largest local Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van; Winter, A.J. de.
‘Marconia’ hamiltoni s.l. is known from two discrete mountainous areas in Malawi, i.e. the (southern) Mt. Mulanje complex, and the (more northern) Zomba Plateau s.l. These uplands are separated by about 65 km of lower lying land with different types of vegetation and climate. Material from these two regions may be distinguished as separate species, the southern populations having comparatively small and broad shells with some apertural dentition (‘M’. hamiltoni, lectotype designated), while the northern populations have noticeably larger and more slender shells with a more reduced apertural dentition (‘M’. malavensis). Discussion of the type localities for both taxa shows that these are either localized in an unlikely place (‘M’. hamiltoni) or unclear...

Short notes and reviews Birds in the sales catalogue of Adriaan Vroeg (1764) described by Pallas and Vosmaer Naturalis
Rookmaaker, L.C.; Pieters, Florence F.J.M..
On 6 October 1764, Adriaan Vroeg sold his collection of birds, insects and a few other animals by auction. The sales catalogue was published anonymously, but contained several scientific names of birds, which have nomenclatorial standing. Only three copies of this catalogue are known. The appendix entitled “Adumbratiunculae” has previously been attributed to Peter Simon Pallas, who is quoted as author of the new names of birds. In the present note, the main text is credited to Arnout Vosmaer, on the basis of contemporary references. Where the species names proposed by Vosmaer are synonyms of those published by Pallas in the same volume, the latter are selected, because some names have been validly used before with Pallas as the author.

Taxonomic revision of Myrosma (Marantaceae) Naturalis
Vieira, S.; Maas, P.J.M.; Borchsenius, F..
Myrosma is a genus of rosulate herbs characterized by a compact and strongly monosymmetric inflorescence with conspicuous, white to pale green, mostly membranous bracts, in the axil of which is a single flower pair. The genus is widely distributed throughout Central Brazil, northern South America, and the Caribbean region. It occurs mostly in savannah environments but can also be found in humid and shaded habitats. We present a taxonomic revision of Myrosma recognizing a single species, Myrosma cannifolia L.f. A complete description of that species is provided with notes on its ecology, distribution, and variation. Three species and one variety are reduced into synonymy and four names are lectotypified. A complete nomenclatural account for all combinations...

Pectinoidea (Bivalvia: Propeamussiidae and Pectinidae) from the Panglao region, Philippine Islands Naturalis
Dijkstra, H.H..
Sixty one Pectinoidea species (11 Propeamussiidae and 50 Pectinidae) collected by the 2004 Panglao Marine Biodiversity Project (PMBP) to Panglao, Philippines, and the PANGLAO 2005 Deep-Sea Cruise are described. One Propeamussiidae species is new to science: Parvamussium largoi spec. nov. Three pectinoidean species (1 Propeamus-siidae, 2 Pectinidae) are new records for the Philippines: Similipecten eous (Melvill in Melvill & Standen, 1907), "Mimachlamys" kauaiensis (Dall, Bartsch & Rehder, 1938) and Haumea rehderi (Grau, 1960). Records of species in the ZMA collection (now Naturalis Biodiversity Center) from the Philippines, not sampled by PMBP 2004 and PANGLAO 2005, are given. Amussium electrum Pelseneer, 1911 is newly synonymised with...

Has one of Captain Cook’s possums landed in Leiden? The possible holotype of Pseudocheirus peregrinus (Boddaert, 1785) Naturalis
Smeenk, C..
The identity of an old female specimen of Pseudocheirus peregrinus (Boddaert, 1785) in the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, is discussed and the early descriptions and nomenclatural history of the species are reviewed. The assumption by Temminck (1824) and Jentink (1888) that the animal originated from one of Cook’s expeditions is extensively considered, since in that case it would be the holotype of Didelphis peregrinus Boddaert, 1785 and of some objective synonyms. The documentation of the specimen is insufficient to draw a definitive conclusion. However, the damage to the facial skin of the animal collected at Endeavour River in 1770 mentioned by Pennant (1781) would agree with the state of the Leiden specimen, which must have been badly...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 48. Nomenclatural chaos untangled, resulting in the naming of the formally undescribed Cacatua species from the Tanimbar Islands, Indonesia (Psittaciformes: Cacatuidae) Naturalis
Roselaar, C.S.; Michels, J.P..
The history and taxonomic status of the species-group names Lophochroa goffini Finsch, 1863, and Cacatua tanimberensis Roselaar & Prins, 2000, both used to name the Tanimbar Corella, are reviewed nomenclaturally. It is confirmed that Lophochroa goffini (sensu Finsch, 1863) is not applicable to the Tanimbar Corella, but represents a junior synonym of Cacatua ducorpsii Pucheran, 1853, as shown by Roselaar & Prins (2000). The substitute name Cacatua tanimberensis they proposed is an objective junior synonym of L. goffini and subjective junior synonym of C. ducorpsii. From the nomenclatural point of view, the Tanimbar Corella remains undescribed and is here named.

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 1. A review of the russet bush-warbler Bradypterus seebohmi (Ogilvie-Grant, 1895) Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C.; Rasmussen, P.C.; Round, P.D.; Rozendaal, F.G..
The bush-warbler Bradypterus mandelli (Brooks, 1875) was described from Sikkim, and numerous specimens from India were identified with it, but it was synonymised with the brown bush-warbler Bradypterus luteoventris (Hodgson, 1845) in 1881. In 1952, east Asian populations were grouped under the name of the Luzon form of the russet bush-warbler, Bradypterus seebohmi (Ogilvie-Grant, 1895). This taxonomy, however, failed to associate the Indian form and its available name mandelli, which received limited usage until 1919, with seebohmi, a matter reviewed and corrected herein. Specimens prove that mandelli has long been known from India, Bhutan, and Myanmar (Burma). The Thai population, previously placed in idoneus (Riley, 1940), belongs instead with the...

Nomenclator Actinologicus seu Indices Ptychodactiariarum, Corallimorphariarum et Actiniarianum comprising indexes of the taxa, synonyms, authors and geographical distributions of the sea anemones of the world included in Professor Oskar Carlgren's 1949 survey Naturalis
Williams, R.B..
In 1949, the late Professor Oskar Carlgren of Lund, Sweden, published a bibliographical survey of the sea anemones of the world, comprising 42 families, 201 genera and 848 species. The survey is an essential starting point for any taxonomic or zoogeographical work on sea anemones. However, the enormous wealth of information that it contains is difficult to extract, because of the lack of adequate indexation. Indexes have therefore been prepared to increase the usefulness of the survey. They are: I, Nomenclatural; II, Authors; III, Geographical. Two appendixes give details of new nominal taxa and nomina nuda published in the survey. No attempt has been made to correct or revise the results of Carlgren's survey: the objective is solely to facilitate the...

The nomenclature of the African wild ass Naturalis
Groves, C.P.; Smeenk, C..
The 19th-century reports on the occurrence and identity of wild asses in North-East Africa are reviewed, as well as the names applied in various publications by Fitzinger and von Heuglin, respectively. The first published name for the African wild ass, Asinus africanus Fitzinger, 1858, is a nomen nudum. The name Equus taeniopus von Heuglin, 1861 is rejected as indeterminable, as it is based on an animal that cannot be identified and may have been a hybrid between a domestic donkey and a Somali wild ass; the type has not been preserved. The first available name thus becomes Asinus africanus von Heuglin & Fitzinger, 1866. A lectotype is designated: a skull of an adult female collected by von Heuglin near Atbara River, Sudan, and present in the Museum für...

Cutting the Nomenclatural Gordian Knot around Pyrgus Carthami (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae) Naturalis
Jong, R. de.
The name Papilio fritillarius Poda, 1761, is shown to be a nomen dubium. It has caused much confusion and has been applied to five or six different species since the first publication and to three different species in the last 40 years. To put an end to the confusion a neotype is designated. For the neotype a specimen has been selected of the species currently known as Pyrgus malvae (Linnaeus), thus making Papilio fritillarius Poda, 1761, a junior subjective synonym of Papilio malvae Linnaeus, 1758. Consequently, Poda's name can no longer be used for the species named Papilio carthami by Hübner, [1813] and now currently placed in the genus Pyrgus. The same species was named Papilio malvae maior by Fabricius (1787) and for reasons of priority Hübner's name...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 34. A preliminary review of the Aegithinidae Naturalis
Wells, D.R.; Dickinson, E.C.; Dekker, R.W.R.J..
Hypotheses of iora phylogeny are reviewed up to date, and the history of the generic name investigated. Interactions between A. nigrolutea and A. tiphia are examined and reasons presented for treating them as separate species. The allowability of a widely disjunct distribution in subspecies A. tiphia deignani Hall, 1957 is queried, and its range narrowed substantially, forcing a re-designation of Indian populations. Additional, small systematic and distributional issues bearing on other Aegithina species are noticed.

Rehabilitation of Platanista gangetica (Lebeck, 1801) as the valid scientific name of the Ganges dolphin Naturalis
Kinze, C.C..
The Dutch scientist Heinrich Julius Lebeck’s description of the Ganges dolphin is, based on a deduced latest date of publication 24 August 1801, given priority over William Roxburgh’s account of the same species, for which no precise date could be established. Although very similar to the work of Roxburgh, Lebeck’s paper shows independent text and figure elements; therefore, Pilleri’s assumption that it is a plagiarism of Roxburgh’s treatise is rejected.
