Moisture dependent physical properties of wild safflower (carthamus oxyacanthus) seeds CIGR Journal
khanahmadzadeh, Abdolvahed; Goli, Hadi; Ghamari, Salah.
Measuring physical properties of crops is necessary for optimal harvesting, cleaning, threshing, sorting, drying, and milling operations. Despite an extensive literature review, there is no information about the physical properties of the wild safflower seed. In this study the physical properties of the wild safflower seed have been investigated as a function of moisture content at four levels (5.4%, 9.4% (initial), 13.4%, and 17.4% d.b.). The average length (mm), width (mm), thickness (mm), arithmetic mean diameter (mm), geometric mean diameter (mm), sphericity (%), volume (cm³), seed surface area (cm²), terminal velocity (m/s), bulk density (gr/cm³), actual density (gr/cm³), and porosity (%)  at initial moisture content  were 6.418, 3.499, 3.388, 4.435,...

Parboiling Duration Effects on Physical Properties of African Breadfruit Seed CIGR Journal
Obi, Okey Francis; Okechukwu, Michael Emeka.
Abstract Parboiling is a pre-dehulling operation and, the effect on the physical properties of African breadfruit seed (var. africana) was investigated. Freshly extracted seeds were parboiled for 0 (control), 5, 10, 15, and 20 minutes, and their physical properties determined. It was observed that parboiling time had a significant effect (p<0.05) on all the physical properties of African breadfruit seeds investigated. The moisture content of the seed ranged from 32.92±0.23 to 50.78±0.19 % (w.b.) as the parboiling time increased. Generally, it was observed that the mean values observed for the physical dimensions (axial dimensions, mean diameters, sphericity, aspect ratio and surface area) increased from 0 to 10 min. parboiling time after which the...

The drying status and quality aspects in terms of physical, nutritional, functional properties and microbial status of three common maize varieties (900M gold, Pioneer 92 and Kavri) dried in different drying complexes in Dinajpur district of Bangladesh are presented in this paper. Total drying varied from18-20 h for drying of freshly harvested maize varieties in the complexes where sun drying method was used. The overall calculation reveled that drying cost in different mills ranged from US$12.12 to US$14.75 per ton of fresh maize (@1US$ equals Tk.80).  The dimensions of the maize varieties as length, width and thickness were found to be ranged from 12.62±0.34 to 14.54±0.32, 10.60±0.35 to 10.24±0.21, 6.38±0.28 to 6.74±0.28 mm, respectively. Determination of Physical and Aerodynamic Characteristics of African Olive (Canarium Schweinfurthii) Nut CIGR Journal
Obi, Okey Francis; Ijere, Chimuanya Emeka; Okechukwu, Michael Emeka.
This study investigated the physical and aerodynamic properties of African olive (Canarium schweinfurthii) nuts. The nut mass frequency was identified and three fractions of the nut were defined to determine their properties. Generally, it was observed that the physical and aerodynamic characteristics of the nut were significantly influenced by the unit mass. Comparison of means revealed that the mean values of the nut physical and aerodynamic properties were significantly different between fractions at p<0.05 except for the true density. The static angle of repose appeared higher than the dynamic angle of repose for all the nut fractions. The coefficient of static friction of the nut fractions on different material surfaces was highest on plywood and...

Engineering properties of Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) calyxes CIGR Journal
Aregbesola, Omotayo Adeteju; Faborode, Micheal Oladimeji; Ezeokoli, Obinna Ikenna.
Physical, mechanical and thermal properties of dried and freshly harvested Roselle calyxes were determined using standard procedures based on literature. The obtained results showed that in terms of shape and size, the red variety was more slender with a pointed apex when compared to the dark red variety (Hibiscus sabdariffa. L). Porosity values were close for the dried calyxes and were 53.85% for fresh calyxes. A high percent (72.21%) of whole calyxes was obtained for the fresh calyxes when compared to that for the two varieties of dried calyxes studied. The value of angle of repose for the fresh calyxes was 51.530 while the dry calyxes had lower values (23.10 and 22.40o) for red and dark red calyxes, respectively. Results also showed that the coefficient...

Performance evaluation and optimization of the maize shelling operation of the multi-purpose farm vehicle CIGR Journal
Kabenge, Isa; Nsubuga, Denis; Zziwa, Ahamada; Kiggundu, Nicholas; Wanyama, Joshua; Banadda, Noble.
Small-scale farmers register high postharvest losses partly due to failure to carry out primary processing operations. Most of the maize shellers on the Ugandan market lead to high percentage of broken maize grains thus raising the risk of aflatoxin infection during storage. In this study, the operation of an existing maize sheller on the market with a shelling speed of 870 rpm for maize at 13 % moisture content was tested. The main objective of this study therefore was twofold; (i) to develop and evaluate a maize sheller and (ii) to optimize the multi-purpose vehicle shelling operation. The improved maize sheller was designed, fabricated, evaluated and optimized using a factorial experiment with shelling speed and moisture content as the main effects at...

Determination of physical properties of apricot fruit and proper box height for storing and handling the apricot fruit CIGR Journal
Hazbavi, Isa.
In avoiding damage to fruit species, the permissible falling height and permissible static pressure are of great importance.  The former is important in planning harvesting and handling operations, the latter in selecting the height of transport containers.  Fruits are generally transported in containers.  The static and dynamic forces which then act on the fruit will cause damage if they exceed given value.  The static force may be calculated from the weight of the fruit column being transported while the dynamic load is a consequence of vibration caused by transport.  The permitted static load for a given fruit may be determined experimentally.  The aim of this study was design of a suitable height based on the measured properties using Ross and Isaacs’s...

Determining some physical properties of Azivash (Corchorus Olitorious L.) seed CIGR Journal
Azadbakht, Mohsen; Pourbagher, Roghayeh.
Used Azivash seed in the research has been provided in summer 2013. The samples were cleaned and separated manually and residuals and broken seeds were taken apart it and healthy seed was provided for testing. Then diameter, area of image, and round coefficient, were calculated using image processing application. Mass of 1000 seeds, mass density, real density and porosity percentage, static friction coefficient, repose angle in two modes of fullness and emptiness were measured. Liquid replacement method has been used to calculate density and volume of the seeds. The results showed that a positive relationship between physical properties of Azivash seed including geometric properties (diameter, volume), gravity properties (weight of 1000 seeds, real density...
