Extraction of bioactive compounds and free radical scavenging activity of purple basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) leaf extracts as affected by temperature and time Anais da ABC (AABC)
PEDRO,ALESSANDRA C.; MOREIRA,FERNANDA; GRANATO,DANIEL; ROSSO,NEIVA D..
In the current study, response surface methodology (RSM) was used to assess the effects of extraction time and temperature on the content of bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity of purple basil leaf (Ocimum basilicum L.) extracts. The stability of anthocyanins in relation to temperature, light and copigmentation was also studied. The highest anthocyanin content was 67.40 mg/100 g extracted at 30 °C and 60 min. The degradation of anthocyanins with varying temperatures and in the presence of light followed a first-order kinetics and the activation energy was 44.95 kJ/mol. All the extracts exposed to light showed similar half-lives. The extracts protected from light, in the presence of copigments, showed an increase in half-life from 152.67 h for the...

Enhanced biosynthesis of quercetin occurs as A photoprotective measure in Lycopersicon esculentum mill. under Acute UV-B exposure BABT
Shourie,Abhilasha; Tomar,Pushpa; Srivastava,Deepika; Chauhan,Rahul.
Lycopersicon esculentum respond to UV-B by enhanced synthesis of flavonoid quercetin, a strong antioxidant that helps the plants to well acclimatize to UV-B stress. Three weeks old plants of L. esculentum were subjected to acute UV-B irradiation for 20, 40 and 60 minutes daily until 28 days and analyzed for the morphological and biochemical changes. UV-B exposure for 40 and 60 minutes considerably affected the growth and biomass of L. esculentum. The leaves were deformed, developed chlorosis and abscised early as compared to the unexposed plants. Biomass declined by 35% and total chlorophyll decreased by 24.7% due to disintegration of chloroplasts. Enhancement was seen in the content of carotenoids, anthocyanins and total flavonoids by 15, 33.3 and 22.8%,...

Architecture and relevance of several strongly adhered biofilms over a polyester imide (PEI) surface BJM
Soncini-Júnior,Giancarlo; Franchetti,Sandra Mara Martins; Marconato,José Carlos.
A microscopical study was undertaken to analyze the eventual fungi adhesion over a polyester imide surface in enameled copper wires. Scanning electron microscopy allowed to observe in these adhered biofilms, a high amount of pigments, hyphae and its enzymatic arsenal probably acting in the surface of the polymer. Due to the highly aromatic nature of this polyester and the residual phenol derivates still present in the reticulated polymer, an antifungal activity could be expected, but no significant changes were noted in fungal growing and in the adhesion process. Additionally, the wires showed completely failure in all insulation properties. The studies aimed to understand and evaluate the great fungi potential that could be explored in biodeterioration...

Carotenoid production in sugarcane juice and synthetic media supplemented with nutrients by Rhodotorula rubra l02 BJM
Bonadio,Mariana de Paula; Freita,Lidyane Aline de; Mutton,Márcia Justino Rossini.
ABSTRACT In order for the use of biological carotenoids to become feasible, it is necessary to have adequate low cost sources and improved methods of cultivation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementation with nitrogen, phosphorus, zinc, and magnesium, on the biomass and carotenoid volumetric production by yeast Rhodotorula rubra L02 using a complex medium (sugarcane juice) and synthetic media (sucrose and maltose) as substrates. The experimental design used for each substrate was randomized in blocks with 16 treatments and 3 repetitions. The treatments were compound for 15 different combinations of nutrients (N; Mg; Zn; P, N + Mg; N + Zn; N + P; Mg + Zn; Mg + P; Zn + P; N + P + Zn; N + P + Mg; N + Zn + Mg; P + Zn + Mg; N + Zn +...

Effect of cobalt on growth, pigments and the photosynthetic electron transport in Monoraphidium minutum and Nitzchia perminuta Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
El-Sheekh,M.M.; El-Naggar,A.H.; Osman,M.E.H.; El-Mazaly,E..
The unicellular green alga Monoraphidium minutum and the diatom Nitzschia perminuta were cultured under different concentrations of Co2+. Growth and pigment content were slightly increased at low concentrations and inhibited by high Co2+ concentrations. The results concerning the effect of different concentrations of Co2+ on photosynthetic O2 evolution showed a reduction in the amount of O2 evolved by each alga in response to increasing Co2+ concentrations. However, an increase in O2 evolution for both M. minutum and N. perminuta was observed at relatively low Co2+ concentrations. Photosynthetic electron transport in M. minutum was more sensitive to Co2+ toxicity than in N. perminuta. On the other hand, the effect of the heavy metal on respiration showed...

Interactive effects between supplemental ultraviolet-B radiation and heavy metals on the growth and biochemical characteristics of Spinacia oleracea L. Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Shweta,Mishra; Agrawal,S.B..
The impact of supplemental UV-B (sUV-B) radiation and heavy metals: Cd (68 µmol.kg-1 soil) and Ni (68 µmol.kg-1 soil) singly and in combination was studied on photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic pigments, metabolites, enzyme activities, biomass accumulation and the net primary productivity of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L. var. All Green), a common leafy vegetable plant. Both the stresses individually and in combination resulted in the reduction of photosynthetic pigments, ascorbic acid, and catalase activity, whereas a reverse trend was observed for anthocyanin, flavonoids and proline content, lipid peroxidation and peroxidase activity. The interactive effects of both the stresses were, however, less than additive. Combined treatment of sUV-B + Cd was...

Salt stress and exogenous silicon influence physiological and anatomical features of in vitro-grown cape gooseberry Ciência Rural
Rezende,Renata Alves Lara Silva; Rodrigues,Filipe Almendagna; Soares,Joyce Dória Rodrigues; Silveira,Helbert Rezende de Oliveira; Pasqual,Moacir; Dias,Gabrielen de Maria Gomes.
ABSTRACT: Salt stress is one of several major abiotic stresses that affect plant growth and development, and there are many evidences that silicon can ameliorate the injuries caused by high salinity. This study presents the results of an assay concerning: (1) the effect of in vitro NaCl-induced salt stress in cape gooseberry plants and (2) the possible mitigating effect of silicon in saline conditions. For that, nodal segments were inoculated in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium under salinity (0.5 and 1.0% NaCl) with different silicic acid concentrations (0, 0.5 and 1.0g L-1). Phytotechnical characteristics, photosynthetic pigments content, and leaf anatomy were evaluated after 30 days. Shoot length, root length, number of leaves and buds, fresh and dry...

Postharvest conservation of alstroemeria ‘ajax’ using 1-methylcyclopropene Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Galati,Vanessa Cury; Muniz,Ana Carolina Corrêa; Guimarães,João Emmanuel Ribeiro; Inestroza-Lizardo,Carlos Orlando; Mattiuz,Claudia Machado Fabrino; Mattiuz,Ben-Hur.
ABSTRACT Cut flowers deteriorate quickly and require postharvest technologies to increase their durability, which is usually around 8 days. Due to the scarce information related to postharvest physiology of Alstroemeria cut flowers, this study aimed to verify the best dose of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to the postharvest conservation of inflorescences of Alstroemeria cv. Ajax, considering the factors associated with floral senescence and loss of the decorative life. The stems were submitted to four doses of 1-MCP (0; 100; 250; 500 ppb), then placed in containers with distilled water and stored at room temperature (22 ºC). The treatments were performed in triplicate containing three stems per replicate. The evaluations were performed every three days for...
