Ancient feeding, ecology and extinction of Pleistocene horses from the Pampean Region, Argentina Ameghiniana
Sánchez,Begoña; Prado,José Luis; Alberdi,María Teresa.
To reconstruct the diet and habitat preference of fossil horses, we measured the carbon and oxygen isotope composition of 35 bone and tooth samples of Equus (Amerhippus) neogeus Lund, Hippidion principale (Lund), and Hippidion devillei (Gervais) from 10 different Pleistocene localities in the Pampean region (Argentina). To compare the three species by stratigraphic age, we divided the samples into three groups: lower Pleistocene, middle-late Pleistocene and latest Pleistocene. Samples of Hippidion devillei from the lower Pleistocene were more homogeneous, with δ13C values ranging between -11.73 to -9.79‰. These data indicate a diet exclusively dominated by C3 plants. In contrast, Hippidion principale and Equus (Amerhippus) neogeus from...

Cordão Formation: loess deposits in the southern coastal plain of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
LOPES,RENATO P.; DILLENBURG,SERGIO R.; SCHULTZ,CESAR L..
ABSTRACT Loess consists of silt-dominated sediments that cover ~10% of the Earth's surface. In southern South America it occurs in Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay, and its presence in southern Brazil was never studied in detail. Here is proposed a new lithostratigraphic unit, Cordão Formation, consisting of loess deposits in the southern Brazilian coastal plain. It consists of fine-very fine silt with subordinate sand and clay, found mostly in lowland areas between Pleistocene coastal barriers. These sediments are pale-colored (10YR hue) and forms ~1,5-2,0 meter-thick stable vertical walls. The clay minerals include illite, smectite, interstratified illite/smectite and kaolinite, the coarser fraction is mostly quartz and plagioclase. Caliche and...

A review of the Quaternary Scelidotheriinae (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Tardigrada) from the Tarija-Padcaya basin, Bolivia Anais da ABC (AABC)
MIÑO-BOILINI,ÁNGEL R.; CARLINI,ALFREDO A.; ZURITA,ALFREDO E.; SOIBELZON,ESTEBAN; RODRÍGUEZ-BUALÓ,SANTIAGO M..
ABSTRACT The Mylodontidae Scelidotheriinae (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Tardigrada) are a diversified clade of South American fossil ground sloths, with a wide geographic distribution, especially in high and middle latitudes. According to the last revision, the Quaternary diversity includes the genera Scelidotherium, Catonyx, and Valgipes. The clade Scelidotheriinae is well represented in the Pleistocene of the Tarija-Padcaya basin, and the first mention of these ground sloths correspond to the middle of the XIX Century. Since then, several species (i.e., Scelidotherium tarijensis, Scelidodon tarijensis, Scelidotherium capellini) have been reported as inhabiting the Tarija-Padcaya basin during the Pleistocene. Despite the abundance of fossil records of...

Upper Pleistocene deposits of the Comprida Island (São Paulo State) dated by thermoluminescence method Anais da ABC (AABC)
SUGUIO,KENITIRO; TATUMI,SONIA H.; KOWATA,EMÍLIA A.; MUNITA,CASIMIRO S.; PAIVA,ROSEMEIRE P..
The Cananéia (Upper Pleistocene) and the Comprida Island (Holocene) formations, outcropping in the Comprida island (SP) have been mapped using geomorphological and lithological criteria. Only one sample of the Cananéia Formation, collected in the homonymous island in front of the Comprida Island, was beyond the limit of the standard radiocarbon method. But since the publication of the geological map of the area in 1978, there has been some doubt on the real occurrence of Pleistocene deposits in southern extremity of Comprida Island. This paper deals with the results of thermoluminescence (TL) ages of eight samples from Comprida Island, which corroborate the Pleistocene age assumed during mapping surveys of these deposits. On the other hand, possible...

Luminescence dated Late Pleistocene wave-built terraces in northeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Suguio,Kenitiro; Bezerra,Francisco H.R.; Barreto,Alcina M.F..
This study presents field and chronological investigations along the coast of northeastern Brazil from ~4°S to 9°S latitude, which corresponds to ~700 km of coastline under a semi-diurnal mesotidal regime. We investigated wave-built terrace deposits and dated sediments using the optically stimulated luminescence and thermoluminescence methods on quartz grains. The wave-built terraces yielded two main age groups: 200-230 ka and 100-130 ka, which we interpreted as depositional ages. We correlated these age groups with oxygen-isotope stages 7c and 5e, respectively. These events correspond to the antepenultimate and penultimate transgressions along the Brazilian coast. The deposits occur mainly in patches on low-lying flat plateaus along the littoral zone and...

The sea-level highstand correlated to marine isotope stage (MIS) 7 in the coastal plain of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
LOPES,RENATO P.; DILLENBURG,SERGIO R.; SCHULTZ,CESAR L.; FERIGOLO,JORGE; RIBEIRO,ANA MARIA; PEREIRA,JAMIL C.; HOLANDA,ELIZETE C.; PITANA,VANESSA G.; KERBER,LEONARDO.
The coastal plain of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil, includes four barrier-lagoon depositional systems formed by successive Quaternary sea-level highstands that were correlated to marine isotope stages (MIS) 11, 9, 5 and 1, despite the scarcity of absolute ages. This study describes a sea-level highstand older than MIS 5, based on the stratigraphy, ages and fossils of the shallow marine facies found in coastal barrier (Barrier II). This facies outcrops along the banks of Chuí Creek, it is composed of fine, well-sorted quartz sand and contains ichnofossils Ophiomorpha nodosa and Rosseliasp., and molluscan shells. The sedimentary record indicates coastal aggradation followed by sea-level fall and progradation of the coastline....

On the fossil Remains of Panochthus Burmeister, 1866 (Xenarthra, Cingulata, Glyptodontidae) from the Pleistocene of southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Ferreira,José D.; Zamorano,Martín; Ribeiro,Ana Maria.
The genus Panochthus represents the last lineage of "Panochthini" recorded in the Pleistocene. This genus has a wide latitudinal distribution in South America, and in Brazil it occurs in the southern and northeastern regions. In this paper we describe new material (isolated osteoderms and caudal tube fragments) assigned to Panochthus from the state of Rio Grande do Sul (southern Brazil) and discuss some taxonomic issues related to Panochthus tuberculatus and Panochthus greslebini based on this material . The occurrence of P. greslebini is the first for outside the Brazilian Intertropical Region. In addition, we describe new diagnostic features to differentiate the osteoderms of P. greslebini and P. tuberculatus. Unfortunately, it was not possible to...

Late Pleistocene carnivores (Carnivora: Mammalia) from a cave sedimentary deposit in northern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
RODRIGUES,SHIRLLEY; AVILLA,LEONARDO S.; SOIBELZON,LEOPOLDO H.; BERNARDES,CAMILA.
The Brazilian Quaternary terrestrial Carnivora are represented by the following families: Canidae, Felidae, Ursidae, Procyonidae Mephitidae and Mustelidae. Their recent evolutionary history in South America is associated with the uplift of the Panamanian Isthmus, and which enabled the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI). Here we present new fossil records of Carnivora found in a cave in Aurora do Tocantins, Tocantins, northern Brazil. A stratigraphical controlled collection in the sedimentary deposit of the studied cave revealed a fossiliferous level where the following Carnivora taxa were present: Panthera onca, Leopardus sp., Galictis cuja, Procyon cancrivorus, Nasua nasua and Arctotherium wingei. Dating by Electron Spinning Resonance indicates that...

Paleoenvironmental Evolution of Continental Carbonates in West-Central Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
OLIVEIRA,EMILIANO C.; ROSSETTI,DILCE F.; UTIDA,GISELLE.
ABSTRACT This paper presents a sedimentological and stratigraphical study of Quaternary (Middle to Late Pleistocene/Holocene) continental carbonates outcrops inside Pantanal Basin and its surroundings, especially in Serra da Bodoquena, Pantanal do Miranda and Corumbá/Ladário plateau, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, as well as in Serra das Araras, in the state of Mato Grosso. The aim is to understand the depositional paleoenvironments and analyse climate and tectonic influences in their genesis and evolution. The results show that the deposition of these continental carbonates started in the Middle to Late Pleistocene and have continued, with some interruptions, until the present days. Sedimentary successions were identified in the different areas,...

Seismic Stratigraphy of Pleistocene Deltaic Deposits in Bahía Blanca Estuary, Argentina Anais da ABC (AABC)
ALIOTTA,SALVADOR; GINSBERG,SILVIA S.; GIAGANTE,DARÍO; VECCHI,LAURA G.; SALVATIERRA,MARTA M..
The Bahía Blanca estuary (Argentina) has a morphological configuration resulting from hydrological and sedimentary processes related to Late Quaternary sea level changes. This estuarine system occupies a large coastal plain with a dense net of tidal channels, low-altitude islands and large intertidal flats. Little is known about the sedimentary units of the marine subbottom. Therefore, a stratigraphical analysis of the northern coast of Bahía Blanca estuary was carried out using high resolution seismic (3.5 kHz) in order to: i) define Quaternary sequences, ii) describe sedimentary structures, and iii) determine the paleoenvironmental conditions of sedimentation. The seismic stratigraphic data collected and their correlation with drilling lithological data...

The rise and fall of the Refugial Hypothesis of Amazonian speciation: a paleoecological perspective Biota Neotropica
Bush,Mark B.; Oliveira,Paulo E. de.
The refugial hypothesis is treated as the definitive history of Amazonian forests in many texts. Surprisingly, this important theoretical framework has not been based on paleoecological data. Consequently, a model of Amazonian aridity during the northern hemispheric glaciation has been accepted uncritically. Ironically, the Refuge Hypothesis has not been tested by paleobotanical data. We present a revision of the concept of Neotropical Pleistocene Forest Refuges and test it in the light of paleocological studies derived from pollen analysis of Amazonian lake sediments deposited during the last 20,000 years. Our analysis is based primarily on paleoenvironmental data obtained from sites in Brazil and Ecuador. These data are contrasted with those that favor...
