Using local raw material for broiler feed in organic farming Organic Eprints
Roinsard, Antoine; Bordeaux, Célia; Lubac, Stanislas; Brachet, Mathilde; German, Karine; Juin, Hervé.
The article summarises the results of French and European research projects. It presents the vegetable protein market for animal feed, the nutritional values of various high-protein raw materials and the results of testing formulation strategies (diversification of raw materials and foraging). New raw materials are interesting, but not available and/or expensive. The tests reveal additional costs related to feed price and increased consumption indices. Formulation strategies with lower levels of protein in the finishing period make it possible to limit these obstacles. This article is mainly interesting for advisors. It is specific to organic farming, but not limited to a geographical area.

Høner med ansvar for ægkvalitet Organic Eprints
Hammershøj, M..
I projekt QEMP om bl.a.

Ökologische Legehennenhaltung in großen Herden: Spezifische Auslaufnutzung und Nährstoffeintrag Organic Eprints
Elbe, Ulrike; Roß, Antje; Steffens, Günter; Van den Weghe, Herman; Winckler, Christoph.
The aim of this study was to examine the excrement load in outdoor ranges due to the outdoor run use of free-range laying hens (organic farming system) to quantify the accumulation of nutrients in the soil. The number of hens using the run (flock of 4,500 hens) were recorded (digital photographs; scan sampling interval 10 min, 5 hours/d, 23 d; 7 to 10/2003) and sward protection grids, positioned at different distances (2 , 6, 17 m) from the barn were used to get the amount of excreta (number and weight of droppings). On average 9.8 % of the hens used the range out of which 69 % preferred the area close to the barn (0-17 m). Excretion rates per hen amounted to 12,4 g*hour, thus accounting for a share of 5 % of the total excrements of the flock. The...

Participatory breeding system for laying hens Organic Eprints
Leenstra, Ferry.
Livestock breeds (and breeding systems) developed for intensive production systems often do not perform as expected in organic and extensive systems. For these alternative systems animals need good social and ranging behaviour, which is in general not necessary in intensive systems with greater confinement for the animals. Although this is the case in all the livestock species (e.g. dairy cows, pigs and sheep), in poultry, the differences between organic/free range and conventional systems are comparatively large

Mangelnde Datenverfügbarkeit als Hemmnis für passgenaue Optimierung der Proteinversorgung von Monogastriern Organic Eprints
Blume, Leonie; Hoischen-Taubner, Susanne; Kötter-Jürß, Martin; Löning, Jan; Renger, Anja; Vogt, Lukas; Sundrum, Albert.

Aulrich, Karen; Witten, Stephanie.

Management factors affecting the use of pasture by table chickens in extensive production systems Organic Eprints
Gordon, Susan H; Forbes, Michael J.
Whether chickens will make proper use of pasture is a problem experienced by producers of free-range and organic chickens. The aims of this project are to identify husbandry techniques and aspects of system design that encourage good pasture use. Two studies have been conducted comprising a winter and a summer flock. The aim of the winter flock was to examine the effect of outdoor artificial shelter on pasture usage. This was done for female Ross 308 birds grown to day 56, and ISA 657 birds grown to day 81. In summer, ISA 657 birds were grown to day 81. Treatments were either standard or enriched brooding, with pasture only or enriched pasture. Standard brooding was in a controlled environment house until day 42. Enriched brooding was in naturally...

The relationship between breast blisters and the availability and use of perches by organic broilers Organic Eprints
Nielsen, Dr. Birte L..
Organic broiler producers are concerned that the occurrence of breast blisters is associated with perching. This was investigated together with a comparison between two strains. Four groups of each 60 Labresse broilers and 12 groups of each 60 i657 broilers where housed indoors in straw bedded pens (9.5 m2) and fed ad libitum with standard organic broiler feed. The birds were subjected to one of three perch availabilities: 15 cm per bird (Labresse and i657), 7.5 cm per bird (i657 only), and 0 cm per bird (i657 only) with four replicates per treatment. At 43 days of age 52 birds from each group were moved to outdoor housing facilities with access to grass-covered outdoor areas (each 9m by 22m). The use of perches was monitored via video recordings...

Pluimvee: aanbieden van ruwvoer Organic Eprints
Wagenaar, Jan-Paul.

Utrangerte verpehøner: Store forskjeller i utnyttelsen i Norge, Sverige og Danmark Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin.
Spent laying hens are killed in different ways. Whereas in Sweden a large proportion is slaughtered for food purpose, even for export, most hens are slaughtered by a mobile system in Denmark, killing the hens in a mobile gas container and mincing them for mink feed. In Norway, most laying hens are killed by gas and incinerated.

Legehennefutter mit 100% Öko-Komponenten Organic Eprints
Andersson, Robby; Meyer zu Bakum, R.J.; Schreiber, A..
EC Regulation 1804/99 requires organic sources of all components of feed in organic husbandry. Especially for organic pig and poultry nutrition it is not researched which components ensure the supply of amino acids. In our previous studies in 2003 with laying hens with genetics of TETRA, the effect of a high percentage of linoleic acids coming from soybeans was demonstrated. The egg weight increased to an average of 73 g in laying week 38 (ANDERSSON et al. 2004). Consequently we tried in 2004 to reduce the egg weights • by using the genetics of ISA XH • by using components with less linoleic acid in the feed. Using the genetics of ISA XH was one advisable result to reduce egg weights. In this actual study, the hens fed with soybeans laid eggs with...
