Thermal environment in two broiler barns during the first three weeks of age AGRIAMBI
H.,Robinson Osorio; Tinoco,Ilda F. F.; Osorio S,Jairo A.; Mendes,Luciano B.; Rocha,Keller S. O.; G.,Lina M. Guerra.
ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate the internal thermal environment of two broiler barns featuring different ventilation systems representative of Brazilian and South American poultry production industry: (a) a negative-pressure tunnel and (b) a positive-pressure lateral ventilation system. Environmental parameters such as dry bulb temperature, relative humidity and temperature-humidity index were assessed; temperature maps for day and night average conditions were determined for the first three weeks of life. Better uniformity of the thermal environment and comfort conditions inside the negative-pressure tunnel were found.

Productive losses on broiler preslaughter operations: effects of the distance from farms to abattoirs and of lairage time in a climatized holding area R. Bras. Zootec.
Vieira,Frederico Márcio Corrêa; Silva,Iran José Oliveira da; Barbosa Filho,José Antonio Delfino; Vieira,Afrânio Márcio Corrêa.
This work aimed to assess the effects of preslaughter lairage time on the welfare and mortality of broilers transported in different farm-abattoir distances. It was evaluated 215 poultry transport trucks from a commercial poultry slaughterhouse from 2006 to 2007. Data were obtained from the holding area acclimatized through fans and water misting in the mornings, afternoons and at night. The thermal variables (temperature and relative humidity), distance, lairage time and density of birds per cage were considered in the analysis. The effects of distance and lairage time were important in the variation of rectal temperature of the animals and on the number of dead animals per truck. Two models were developed (mean and dispersion), for each response variable...

Locomotion deficiencies in broiler production cause poor welfare and lead to change in drinking and feeding behavior with consequent loss in weight gain. This research aimed to assess locomotion deficiencies in broiler chicken by analyzing the vertical peak force on both feet during walk. A chamber was built with an inlet ramp, a horizontal walkway in the middle and an outlet ramp. In the walkway a thin mat with piezoelectric crystal sensors was placed to record the step vertical peak force of the feet while walking on the force platform. The measurement system consisted of a mat with electronic sensors and software that allowed real time recording of the forces and the processing and analysis of data. Footage was taken from two digital video cameras and...

Animal-based agriculture, phosphorus management and water quality in Brazil: options for the future Scientia Agricola
Shigaki,Francirose; Sharpley,Andrew; Prochnow,Luís Ignácio.
Eutrophication has become a major threat to water quality in the U.S., Europe, and Australasia. In most cases, freshwater eutrophication is accelerated by increased inputs of phosphorus (P), of which agricultural runoff is now a major contributor, due to intensification of crop and animal production systems since the early 1990s'. Once little information is available on the impacts of Brazilian agriculture in water quality, recent changes in crop and animal production systems in Brazil were evaluated in the context of probable implications of the fate of P in agriculture. Between 1993 and 2003, there was 33% increase in the number of housed animals (i.e., beef, dairy cows, swine, and poultry), most in the South Region (i.e., Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, and...

Ohagwu, Chukwuemeka Jude; Okonkwo, Ifeanyi Wilfred; Mbah, Godwin Christopher Ezike; Njoku, Howard Okezie.
Computational modeling, simulation and validation were carried out on Trombe wall solar chick brooder used for optimal poultry production. Predictive linear differential equations based on physical, mathematical principles and relationships governing thermo-physical properties of the components of the brooder were formulated, discretized and expressed in their finite different forms using SCILAB 5.5.2. T-test statistics was carried out on predicted and measured mean data: temperature of Trombe wall glaze (TG1), temperature of pebble glaze (TG2), temperature of the pebble bed bin (Tp), temperature of the brooding room (TBr), and temperature of the Trombe wall outer surface (Tw (outer surface))then separated using Levene test for equality. The model...

Rossato,J.M.; Brito,B.G.; Kobayashi,R.K.T.; Koga,V.L.; Sarmiento,J.J.P.; Nakazato,G.; Lopes,L.F.D.; Balsan,L.A.G.; Grassotti,T.T.; Brito,K.C.T..
ABSTRACT Diarrheagenic (DEC) and avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) are associated with intestinal and extra-intestinal infections (ExPEC), respectively. We aimed to analyze the antimicrobial susceptibility, gene encoding virulence factors associated to DEC and APEC, and phylogenetic classification in E. coli isolated from 320 samples of feed and ingredients. Antimicrobial susceptibility was performed using the disk diffusion method and Multiple Antibiotic Resistance (MAR) Index and Multi-Drug Resistance (MDR) were calculated. Phylogenetic classification was performed on samples harboring DEC and/or APEC virulence-associated genes. A total of 110 E. coli strains were isolated in 15% (49/320) of the evaluated inputs (n=13 vegetable meal; n=33 animal...

Antibiotic resistance and virulence factors among Escherichia coli isolates from avian organic fertilizer Ciência Rural
Agostinho,Juliana Maria Avanci; Cardozo,Marita Vedovelli; Borzi,Mariana Monezi; Marin,José Moacir.
ABSTRACT: Brazilian poultry industry generates large amounts of organic waste, such as chicken litter, which is often used in agriculture. Among the bacteria present in organic fertilizer are members of the Enterobacteriaceae family, such as Escherichia coli. The aim of this study was to analyze the profile of virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance of E. coli isolates from avian organic fertilizer. A total of 47 E. coli strains were tested through Polymerase chain reaction to detect virulence genes (hlyF, iss, ompT, iutA and iroN). Fourteen antimicrobials were used to test antimicrobial susceptibility in the strains. Genes characteristic of Avian Pathogenic E. coli (APEC) were reported among the strains, with the hlyF, iss and ompT genes being the...

Thermal stress related with mortality rates on broilers' preslaughter operations: a lairage time effect study Ciência Rural
Vieira,Frederico Márcio Corrêa; Silva,Iran José Oliveira da; Barbosa Filho,José Antonio Delfino; Vieira,Afrânio Márcio Corrêa; Rodrigues-Sarnighausen,Valéria Cristina; Garcia,Danilo de Brito.
Concerning the reduction of preslaughter death losses, high temperature and relative humidity in the tropics are the major concerns regarding broiler survival prior slaughtering. However, the relationship between different lairage times under controlled environment and the thermal condition outside the holding area is still unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare different intervals of lairage time with different environmental temperature and relationship with poultry mortality rates. A study was conducted in a commercial poultry abattoir in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in the year of 2006. The historical data set from 13,937 trucks, about broiler mortality during preslaughter operations, was given by the abattoir. Factors that influence the...
