ANÁLISE ESTRUTURAL DA SÉRIE DE PREÇOS DO SUÍNO NO ESTADO DO PARANÁ, 1994 A 2007 AgEcon
---------------------------------------------The objective this paper is to analyze the structure and behavior of the monthly price received...

Regulating Stock Externalities Under Uncertainty AgEcon
Newell, Richard G.; Pizer, William A..
Using a simple analytical model incorporating benefits of a stock, costs of adjusting the stock, and uncertainty in costs, we uncover several important principles governing the choice of price-based policies (e.g., taxes) relative to quantity-based policies (e.g., tradable permits) for controlling stock externalities. Applied to the problem of greenhouse gases and climate change, we find that a price-based instrument generates several times the expected net benefits of a quantity instrument. As in Weitzman (1974), the relative slopes of the marginal benefits and costs of controlling the externality continue to be critical determinants of the efficiency of prices relative to quantities, with flatter marginal benefits and steeper marginal costs favoring...

U.S. Cotton Prices and the World Cotton Market: Forecasting and Structural Change AgEcon
Isengildina-Massa, Olga; MacDonald, Stephen.
The purpose of this study was to analyze structural changes that took place in the cotton industry in recent years and develop a statistical model that reflects the current drivers of U.S. cotton prices. Legislative changes authorized the U.S. Department of Agriculture to resume publishing cotton price forecasts for the first time in 79 years. In addition, systematic problems have become apparent in the forecasting models used by USDA and elsewhere, highlighting the need for an updated review of price relationships. This study concluded that a structural break in the U.S. cotton industry occurred in 1999, and that world cotton supply has become an important determinant of U.S. cotton prices. China’s trade and production policy also continues to be an...

What Are the Consequences of United States Government Slaughter Policies on Horse Prices? AgEcon
Vestal, Mallory K.; Lusk, Jayson L.; Cooper, Steven R.; Ward, Clement E..
As a result of several judicial rulings, the processing of horses for human consumption came to a halt in 2007. This article determines the impact horse prices suffered as a result of the elimination of horse processing facilities. A quantile regression approach is applied and is useful, as horses of varying quality were impacted differently. The authors acknowledge that the slaughter ban occurred alongside the U.S. economic downturn and attempts to account for the recession to adequately asses the policy effect.

A INFLUÊNCIA DA PRODUÇÃO INTERNA E DAS IMPORTAÇÕES ORIZÍCOLAS DO MERCOSUL NO PREÇO INTERNO DO ARROZ COM CASCA AgEcon
Sonaglio, Claudia Maria; Zamberlan, Carlos Otavio; Coronel, Daniel Arruda; Silva, Angelita Freitas Da; Farias, Giuliana Mendonca De.

Incentives for Residential Water Conservation: Water Price, Revenue, and Consumer Equity in Florida AgEcon
Rawls, Colin; Borisova, Tatiana; Berg, Sanford; Burkhardt, Jeffrey.
Economic theory suggests that price incentives can be used to encourage water conservation in residential consumers. Conservation water rates are designed to send price signals that encourage households to reduce discretionary water use in the long term. However, it is not always clear that conservation rates effectively provide meaningful incentives. Utilities themselves may also not have strong incentives to implement conservation rates. If conservation rates have a negative impact on revenue, or if they lead to increased revenue variability, utilities may have a disincentive to use them. In addition, block pricing structures (where unit water rate increases with water usage) may be inequitable, in the sense that the “revenue burden” is borne...

Effects of Antidumping Duties with Bertrand Competition: Some Evidence for Frozen Catfish Fillets AgEcon
Duc, Nguyen Minh; Kinnucan, Henry W..
Antidumping duties are popular in the United States because under the Byrd Amendment domestic industry gets to keep tariff revenues. However, whether antidumping duties are an effective instrument of protection depends crucially on the tariff's ability to increase demand for the home good. Under Bertrand competition, the Byrd Amendment enhances tariff effects on the home price and trade flows in comparison to perfect competition. Assuming Bertrand competition and differentiated products, price-reaction functions of frozen catfish fillets are derived and estimated jointly with a demand equation using monthly data for the period January 1999 - December 2005. An inverse demand equation for farm-level products is also added to explore the efficacy of the...

MODELLING THE DYNAMICS OF PRODUCTION ADJUSTMENT TO SHORT-TERM MARKET SHOCKS AgEcon
Niemi, Jarkko K.; Lehtonen, Heikki.
Models of agricultural economics typically operate at an annual basis or in a static equilibrium framework where inputs, outputs and their prices may change considerably. Production dynamics, however, imply that models relying on spatial and temporal aggregation do not capture the effects of biological constraints in the short run. This paper examines short and long-term impacts of demand and production cost shocks in the pig sector. The analysis is carried out with a dynamic programming model which takes into account changes in export and domestic demand and market clearing price. It optimizes the supply of piglets on a monthly basis. Econometric techniques are used to estimate demand functions. Short-term negative market shocks can already have...

Comparative marketing performance between the Peruvian Cooperatives and the Intermediaries: Acopagro cooperative vs. Intermediaries- a Case Study AgEcon
Higuchi, Angie; Moritaka, Masahiro; Fukuda, Susumu.
In the Peruvian jungle, there are two main cocoa marketing channels: the intermediaries and the cooperative. For example, the Acopagro Cooperative, a Peruvian organization, has contributed to the shift from illegal crops like coca to an alternative crop like cocoa which gives small scale farmers a sustainable welfare. Despite the fact that the Acopagro cooperative benefits their members by paying a fair price, supplying technical assistance and credit, many farmers still prefer commercializing their cocoa via the intermediaries. A further analysis of cocoa prices was carried out through personal interviews and a survey made between December 2009 and January 2010, of 243 farmers in Juanjui, San Martin, Peru's main cocoa production area. The outcomes...

Data Aggregation and Information Loss AgEcon
McKee, Gregory J.; Miljkovic, Dragan.
Analysts often use a single average or otherwise aggregated price series to represent several geographic or product markets even when disaggregate data are available. We hypothesize that such an approach may not be appropriate under some circumstances, such as when only long-term relationships hold among price series or when homogeneous but relatively perishable products are considered. This question is of particular relevance in agriculture because of seasonality in production and harvest across various production regions, and the effect of changes in demand as substitute crops become available. We analyze this question in the context of fresh strawberry production. We find that in the case of the strawberry market, aggregate series are appropriate for...

THE U.S. SUGAR INDUSTRY UNDER EU AND DOHA TRADE LIBERALIZATION AgEcon
Andino, Jose; Taylor, Richard D.; Koo, Won W..
This study evaluates potential reforms of the EU and some liberalization policies under the Doha agenda proposal. Results indicate that EU sugar policy reforms will increase the Caribbean sugar price from 8.7 to 9.96 cents, but will not affect the U.S. sugar industry. If the world sugar industry is liberalized on the basis of the WTO-Doha framework proposal, U.S. sugar imports will increase to 1.9 million tons and wholesale price will decrease from 24.89 to 23.79 cents per pound. Under this scenario, it is also expected that the Caribbean price will increase from 8.7 to 12.1 cents per pound. Brazil will benefit the most as production and export sales increase.

The Estimation of Food Demand Elasticities in Canada AgEcon
Pomboza, Ruth; Mbaga, Msafiri Daudi.
Changing consumer and market demands is an important driver behind the challenges and opportunities that are facing the agriculture and agri-food sector in Canada and that will influence the sector's profitability and competitiveness in the future. It is therefore important to understand developments in the consumer demand for agriculture and agri-food products. The report provides updated demand elasticities for fourteen food groups in Canada. The estimates are useful for conducting analysis of the changing structure of the agriculture and agri-food sector and can help quantify the impacts that changes in economic variables and policies that impact those economic variables might have.
