------------------------------------- The area used for growing poppy seed for human... |

This study used 30 years of continuous data for 135 farms in Kansas to explore changes in productivity using Malmquist productivity indices. The indices were used to determine whether there was productivity convergence or divergence in Kansas farms. The results showed that there was significant divergence among the farms and not a tendency for farms to catch-up to the same levels of productivity as the top farms in the sample. The average annual productivity growth over the sample period, 1979-2008, was 0.50 percent. The top farms based on MPI were larger in terms of value of farm production, crop farm income and livestock farm income and received a larger percentage of their income from oilseeds, feed grains, and swine than the other farms on average and... |

The role of price risk in sow farrowings is investigated by using bivariate ARCH-M and GARCH-M models and a nonparametric kernel estimator. To account for the relevant time horizon of irreversible supply decisions, predictions for mean price and conditional price variance are iterated forward. The empirical results vary markedly in terms of their implications for risk response in hog supply decisions, with the ARCH-M and GARCH-M models suggesting a small and negative risk effect. Estimates of the marginal risk premium also indicate moderate and variable departures from marginal cost pricing in sow farrowing supply decisions. |

Energy Input Use and CO2 Emissions in the Major Wheat Growing Regions of India ABSTRACT The structural and technological changes that have taken place over the past several decades have resulted in an increased use of direct and indirect energy inputs in Indian agriculture. In particular, the substitution of capital for labour has increased the reliance of agriculture on non-renewable energy use. Increased wheat production in India has been achieved through the expanded use of increasingly sophisticated inputs, such as farm machinery, fertilizers, herbicides, and irrigation. All these involve the use of commercial energy. The use of fossil fuel in the agriculture industry contributes to the overall Greenhouse emissions. This study estimates the... |

This paper uses a random sample of 881 farmers drawn from eastern and western Kenya to examine the prevalence and drivers of seed and pollen mediated geneflow in the two major sorghum growing regions. It employs both qualitative and quantitative techniques to assess farmers’ awareness of wild sorghum varieties, the practices they use in maintaining varietal purity and the conditioners of their success in maintaining the purity of cultivated varieties. The study finds that, among others, cultural differences, agro-climate and poverty affect the awareness, practices used in maintaining varietal purity and farmers’ success in doing so. These findings have implication for biosafety and policy in Kenya due to the clamour to introduce genetically modified... |
