A magyarországi máktermelésről AgEcon
Karacsony, Peter; Toth, Kalman; Pinek, Gyula; Pal, Robert.
------------------------------------- The area used for growing poppy seed for human...

Efficiency Analysis of Rural Hospitals: Parametric and Semi-parametric Approaches AgEcon
Nedelea, I. Cristian; Fannin, James Matthew.
This paper examined cost efficiency differences between rural hospitals participating in the Critical Access Hospital (CAH) Program and a group of non-converting, prospectively paid rural hospitals using both a two-stage semi-parametric approach as well as stochastic frontier analysis (SFA). CAHs receive Medicare cost-based reimbursement, in contrast with the rest of the hospitals reimbursed under Medicare prospective payment system (PPS). However, cost-based reimbursement has been associated with inefficiency in hospital operations and, consequently, concerns have been raised about the efficiency of CAHs. Results showed a positive and significant effect of CAH status on cost inefficiency under both model specifications suggesting that CAHs were less...

Productivity Divergence Across Kansas Farms AgEcon
Yeager, Elizabeth A.; Langemeier, Michael R..
This study used 30 years of continuous data for 135 farms in Kansas to explore changes in productivity using Malmquist productivity indices. The indices were used to determine whether there was productivity convergence or divergence in Kansas farms. The results showed that there was significant divergence among the farms and not a tendency for farms to catch-up to the same levels of productivity as the top farms in the sample. The average annual productivity growth over the sample period, 1979-2008, was 0.50 percent. The top farms based on MPI were larger in terms of value of farm production, crop farm income and livestock farm income and received a larger percentage of their income from oilseeds, feed grains, and swine than the other farms on average and...

ALTERNATIVE MEASURES OF RISK IN COMMODITY SUPPLY MODELS: AN ANALYSIS OF SOW FARROWING DECISIONS IN THE UNITED STATES AgEcon
Holt, Matthew T.; Moschini, GianCarlo.
The role of price risk in sow farrowings is investigated by using bivariate ARCH-M and GARCH-M models and a nonparametric kernel estimator. To account for the relevant time horizon of irreversible supply decisions, predictions for mean price and conditional price variance are iterated forward. The empirical results vary markedly in terms of their implications for risk response in hog supply decisions, with the ARCH-M and GARCH-M models suggesting a small and negative risk effect. Estimates of the marginal risk premium also indicate moderate and variable departures from marginal cost pricing in sow farrowing supply decisions.

Determinants of Cost Inefficiency of Critical Access Hospitals: A Two-stage, Semi-parametric Approach AgEcon
Nedelea, I. Cristian; Fannin, James Matthew.
This study examines, post-conversion, cost inefficiency of Critical Access Hospitals (CAH) using a two-stage approach. While the results suggest that Medicare cost-based reimbursement and longer participation in the CAH program may increase the cost inefficiency of CAHs, the extent of this inefficiency increase is lower than what previous literature showed.

2008 Michigan Swine Business Analysis Summary AgEcon
Wittenberg, Eric; Harsh, Stephen B..
This report summarizes the financial and production records of 11 Michigan swine farms. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from one or a combination of fat hogs, feeder pigs and cull breeding hogs sales. The records came from Michigan State University’s TelFarm project and the Farm Credit Service system in Michigan. The values were pooled into averages for reporting purposes. Farm records were included if a farm financial summary was completed on 2008 data including beginning and ending balance sheets, plus income and expenses. The data were checked to verify that cash discrepancy was less than 10% of gross cash inflow and that debt discrepancy was less than $1,000. While considerable variation in the...

Analyzing the Determinants of Technical Efficiency Among Traditional Dairy Farms in Wisconsin: A Quantile Regression Approach AgEcon
Chidmi, Benaissa; Solis, Daniel; Funtanilla, Margil; Cabrera, Victor E..
This study analyzes the determinants of TE among traditional dairy farms in the State of Wisconsin taking into account dairy farms’ heterogeneity. To do so, we first estimate a production frontier and the level of TE using the SPF framework. Then we analyze the determinants of TI using a quantile regression analysis. The results indicate that the determinants of TE affect in very specific ways farmers with different levels of TE. This result confirms our hypothesis on the importance of controlling for farm heterogeneity when analyzing the determinants of TE. This issue is also important from an empirical point of view. Policy makers could improve the effectiveness of their work by targeting specific agricultural services and aid designed for farmers with...

Farm production costs estimation trough PMP Models: an application in three Italian Regions AgEcon
Arfini, Filippo; Donati, Michele; Marongiu, Sonia; Cesaro, Luca.
The objective of this paper is to present a Generalised Positive Mathematical Programming model suitable for the estimation of variable cost of production associated with different farm activities. This work present, discuss and demonstrates that the Generalised PMP model is a useful theoretical framework for the representation of farm choice, including for the description of costs related to the production function chosen by each entrepreneur. For this characteristics the model can be used for the farms belonging the FADN sample providing a powerful tools for researcher that would like to know variable costs of production for agricultural activities or estimate the impact of agricultural policy and market reform at regional and sectorial level. The main...

An economic analysis of the possibility of reducing pesticides in French field crops AgEcon
Jacquet, Florence; Butault, Jean-Pierre; Guichard, Laurence.
The paper aims to study the effects of reducing pesticide use by farmers in the arable sector in France and the feasibility of a policy target of reducing pesticide use by half. The originality of the approach is to combine statistical data and expert knowledge to describe low-input alternative techniques at the national level. These data are used in a mathematical programming model to simulate the effect on land use, production and farmers’ income of achieving different levels of pesticide reduction. The results show that reducing pesticide use by 30% could be possible without reducing farmers’ income. We also estimate the levels of tax on pesticides necessary to achieve different levels of reduction of pesticide use and the effect of an incentive...

Energy Input Use and CO2 Emissions in the Major Wheat Growing Regions of India AgEcon
Manaloor, Varghese; Sen, Chandra.
Energy Input Use and CO2 Emissions in the Major Wheat Growing Regions of India ABSTRACT The structural and technological changes that have taken place over the past several decades have resulted in an increased use of direct and indirect energy inputs in Indian agriculture. In particular, the substitution of capital for labour has increased the reliance of agriculture on non-renewable energy use. Increased wheat production in India has been achieved through the expanded use of increasingly sophisticated inputs, such as farm machinery, fertilizers, herbicides, and irrigation. All these involve the use of commercial energy. The use of fossil fuel in the agriculture industry contributes to the overall Greenhouse emissions. This study estimates the...

Composition of the National Sheep Flock and Specification of Equilibrium Prices and Quantities for the Australian Sheep and Wool Industries, 2002-03 to 2004-05 AgEcon
Mounter, Stuart W.; Griffith, Garry R.; Piggott, Roley R.; Fleming, Euan M.; Zhao, Xueyan.
The data used, and the methods and assumptions fundamental to the development of an equilibrium displacement model (EDM) of the Australian sheep and wool industries specified in Mounter et al. (2007), are contained in this report. The national sheep flock is disaggregated into Merino and non-Merino sheep in the three agricultural zones of Australia using 2002-03 Australian agricultural and grazing industries survey data. Opening and closing sheep numbers, death rates and weaning percentages were used to derive the supply and use of sheep in each zone. Annual shorn wool production was split into four fibre-diameter categories in each zone corresponding to ABS wool export categories. Wool production percentages and relative greasy fleece weights were used to...

The Economic Impact of a Possible Irrigation-Water Shortage in Odessa Sub-Basin: Potato Production and Processing AgEcon
Bhattacharjee, Sanjoy; Holland, David W..
The Columbia Basin Project (CBP) was one of the single largest projects undertaken by the Bureau of Reclamation. The venture, which started in the 1930s in Central Washington, did not entirely turn out as expected. In fact, almost half of the proposed irrigable area, located mainly in the northeastern portion of the original plan, doesn't have any water supply from the project for irrigation purposes. The Odessa Sub-area is one of those areas. The land in this area is fertile and produces very high quality potatoes. Over the last couple of decades, potato production in this Odessa sub-region has been possible primarily because of irrigation based on deep wells. However, the underground water is drawing down and potato production may shut down as a result....

Prevalence and drivers of seed and pollen-mediated geneflow in sorghum: implications for biosafety regulations and policy in Kenya AgEcon
Mgonja, Mary A.; Okello, Julius Juma; Mwangi, Stephen G.; Manyasa, Eric; Ouma, James Okuro; Godiah, Lawrence; Alumira, Jane; Kibuka, J..
This paper uses a random sample of 881 farmers drawn from eastern and western Kenya to examine the prevalence and drivers of seed and pollen mediated geneflow in the two major sorghum growing regions. It employs both qualitative and quantitative techniques to assess farmers’ awareness of wild sorghum varieties, the practices they use in maintaining varietal purity and the conditioners of their success in maintaining the purity of cultivated varieties. The study finds that, among others, cultural differences, agro-climate and poverty affect the awareness, practices used in maintaining varietal purity and farmers’ success in doing so. These findings have implication for biosafety and policy in Kenya due to the clamour to introduce genetically modified...
