IODE National Report for Argentina OceanDocs
The need to have an organization devoted to gathering the oceanographic and environmental data and information distributed among several institutions and researchers, led to the establishment in 1969 of a DNA. As a result of this earlier effort, the Centro Argentino de Datos Oceanograficos (CEADO) was created under an agreement between the Argentine Navy Hydrographic Service (SHN) and the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET), and designated in 1974 as NODC. In 1987, IOC credited CEADO with the responsibility of becoming RNDOC-SOC. Three years later it was commissioned by IOC and WMO as Specialized Oceanographic Center of the South Atlantic Ocean within the IGOSS program. In 1993, was designated as National Depositary Center of...

Analysis of Participatory Research Projects in the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center AgEcon
Lilja, Nina K.; Bellon, Mauricio R..
Through a survey of scientists from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in 2004, this study assessed the extent to which participatory methods had been used by the center, how they were perceived by the scientists, and how participatory research could be applied more effectively by CIMMYT and partners. Results for 19 CIMMYT projects suggest among other things that participatory approaches at the center were largely “functional”—that is, aimed at improving the efficiency and relevance of research—and had in fact added value to the research efforts. The authors suggest that CIMMYT should (1) create a more conducive environment for scientists to share experiences on such approaches and (2) better document their impacts on farmers’...

The Asian Maize Biotechnology Network (AMBIONET): A Model for Strengthening National Agricultural Research Systems AgEcon
Pray, Carl E..
This report reviews the impacts of the Asian Maize Biotechnology Network (AMBIONET), organized by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) with funding from the Asian Development Bank to strengthen the capacity of public maize research institutions in China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam to produce high-yielding, disease resistant, stress tolerant maize cultivars. It was found that, during its lifetime (1998-2005), AMBIONET clearly benefited researchers and institutions in participating countries, as well as CIMMYT. In addition, there was good progress toward developing improved cultivars. Asian farmers are just beginning to gain from the work, but their future benefits will likely pay for AMBIONET’s relatively...

ADOPTION OF MAIZE AND WHEAT TECHNOLOGIES IN EASTERN AFRICA: A SYNTHESIS OF THE FINDINGS OF 22 CASE STUDIES AgEcon
Doss, Cheryl R.; Mwangi, Wilfred; Verkuijl, Hugo; De Groote, Hugo.
This paper synthesizes the findings of 22 micro-level studies on technology adoption carried out by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) with national agricultural research systems in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from 1996-1999. The authors found that technology adoption is taking place across Eastern Africa but considerable scope remains to improve the productivity of smallholder agriculture in higher potential regions with high levels of adoption. Extension was the variable most highly correlated with technology adoption, and extension services continue to play an important role in disseminating information on new varieties and how to manage them. Despite the usefulness of the micro-study results, especially for priority...
