Interannual variability of zooplankton in the Dumont d'Urville sea (139 degrees E-146 degrees E), east Antarctica, 2004-2008 ArchiMer

Spatial and temporal variability of zooplankton was studied during five summers (2004-2008) in the Dumont d'Urville Sea, east Antarctica. The species recorded, based on the catch of a 500 mm-mesh Bongo net, were typical of southern continental shelf communities in Antarctica, including Euphausia crystallorophias, polychaetes, pteropods and biomass-dominant copepods. There was a strong degree of temporal variation in abundance, possibly related to the thickness and extent of the sea ice cover during each spring prior to the surveys. Ocean waves across the Arctic: attenuation due to dissipation dominates over scattering for periods longer than 19 s ArchiMer

The poorly understood attenuation of surface waves in sea ice is generally attributed to the combination of scattering and dissipation. Scattering and dissipation have very different effects on the directional and temporal distribution of wave energy, making it possible to better understand their relative importance by analysis of swell directional spreading and arrival times. Here we compare results of a spectral wave model – using adjustable scattering and dissipation attenuation formulations – with wave measurements far inside the ice pack. Chemical characterization of exopolysaccharides from Antarctic marine bacteria ArchiMer

Exopolysaccharides (EPS) may have an important role in the Antarctic marine environment, possibly acting as ligands for trace metal nutrients such as iron or providing cryoprotection for growth at low temperature and high salinity. Ten bacterial strains, isolated from Southern Ocean particulate material or from sea ice, were characterized. Whole cell fatty acid profiles and 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolates included representatives of the genera Pseudoalteromonas, Shewanella, Polaribacter, and Flavobacterium as well as one strain, which constituted a new bacterial genus in the family Flavobacteriaceae. Rapid reductions and millennial-scale variability in Nordic Seas sea ice cover during abrupt glacial climate changes ArchiMer

Constraining the past sea ice variability in the Nordic Seas is critical for a comprehensive understanding of the abrupt Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) climate changes during the last glacial. Here we present unprecedentedly detailed sea ice proxy evidence from two Norwegian Sea sediment cores and an East Greenland ice core to resolve and constrain sea ice variations during four D-O events between 32 and 41 ka. Arctic Ocean response to Greenland Sea wind anomalies in a suite of model simulations ArchiMer

Multi‐model Arctic Ocean ``Climate Response Function” (CRF) experiments are analyzed in order to explore the effects of anomalous wind forcing over the Greenland Sea (GS) on poleward ocean heat transport, Atlantic Water (AW) pathways, and the extent of Arctic sea ice. Particular emphasis is placed on the sensitivity of the AW circulation to anomalously strong or weak GS winds in relation to natural variability, the latter manifested as part of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The Antarctic polar ice cap constrains a freshwater flaux into the Austral Ocean through two equally important pathways : a localized and immediate injection through the melting of ice-shelves bases, and a delayed offshore injection through the calving and subsequent melt of icebergs. Some studies reckon that melting icebergs have the capacity to alter the hydrological and biogeo-chemical characteristics of the water column. The numerical models trying to evaluate this impact have shown contrasting results. Abrupt climate changes for Iceland during the last millennium: Evidence from high resolution sea ice reconstructions ArchiMer

A high resolution account of Icelandic sea ice over the last millennium has been constructed using a novel proxy based on the presence in sediments of a biomarker (IP25) produced by sea ice algae. Comparison with historical sea ice records demonstrates a strong correlation between documented sea ice Occurrences and the IP25 proxy. An excellent agreement is also observed between the IP25 record and a diatom-based sea surface temperature reconstruction obtained from the same core and the Crowley and Lowery Northern Hemisphere temperature reconstruction. Many processes that affect ocean surface gravity waves in sea ice give rise to attenuation rates that vary with both wave frequency and amplitude. Here we particularly test the possible effects of basal friction, scattering by ice floes, and dissipation in the ice layer due to dislocations, and ice breakup by the waves. The possible influence of these processes is evaluated in the marginal ice zone of the Beaufort Sea, where extensive wave measurements were performed. The wave data includes in situ measurements and the first kilometer-scale map of wave heights provided by Sentinel-1 SAR imagery on 12 October 2015, up to 400 km into the ice. El presente estudio consiste en un análisis descriptivo de los parámetros físicos (temperatura-salinidad) y corrientes superficiales y sub-superficiales, obtenidos en los sitios de visita turística de la Reserva Marina de Galápagos (RMG), los cuales describen las condiciones oceanográficas de dichos lugares. Estos datos han sido procesados con el propósito de establecer una caracterización de la temperatura superficial del mar en estos sitios, y sus variaciones a lo largo del 2011. Esta caracterización será soportada con el uso de los datos del Análisis Operacional de Temperatura Superficial del Mar y de Hielo Marino (UKMO-L4HRfnd-GLOB-OSTIA) a fin de conseguir una continuidad en la serie de tiempo anual.

Submeso-scale Mixing Features in the Gerlache Strait Bays (Antarctica) Boletín de Investigaciones

ABSTRACT Measurements of turbulence in the ocean are sparse, especially in environments such as Antarctica. Here we map the spatial distribution of diapycnal diffusivities and the water column characteristics across the three main bays in the Gerlache Strait on the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula. The measurements were recorded during the Fifth Colombian Antarctic Expedition, 2018-2019, using a Vertical Microstructure Profiler in free fall for the first 400 m depth, to record fluctuations of vertical shear at dissipation scales (10 -3 - 10 3 m). Diapycnal diffusivities are higher by 1-2 orders of magnitude in the Gerlache mainstream compared with the interior bays, with values from O (log 10kρ= -3 m2s-1) to O (log 10kρ= -5 m2s-1) respectively...
