Numerical Simulation of the Influence of Mean Sea Level Rise on Typhoon Storm Surge in the East China Sea. OceanDocs
Gao, Zhigang; Han, Shuzong; Liu, Kexiu; Zhrng, Yunxia; Yu, Huaming.
In this paper, ECOMSED (Estuarine Coastal Ocean Model with sediment transport) model is employed to simulate storm surge process caused by typhoon passing across East China Sea in nearly years. Capability of ECOMSED to simulate storm surge is validated by comparing model result with observed data. Sensitivity experiments are designed to study the influence of sea level rise on typhoon storm surge. Numerical experiment shows that influence of mean sea level rise on typhoon storm surge is non-uniform spatially and changes as typhoon process differs. Maybe fixed boundary method would weaken the influence of mean sea level rise on storm surge, and free boundary method is suggested for the succeeding study.

Geomorphology of the Kenyan Coast: Not as a Result of Sea-Level Change Alone OceanDocs
Abuodha, P.A.W..
The coastal setting and the geology control the geomorphology on the Kenyan coast. The evolution of the physical environment has also been influenced by climate, wave and tidal regime, sedimentation and river discharge. The shore terraces of Kenyan coast correspond to eustatic movements of sea level. There seems to be evidence of a high water level during the late Pleistocene. For the lower terraces a Holocene age is suggested. During the Pleistocene, sea level fluctuations associated with glacial / interglacial phases left well developed raised platforms and beaches. The Kenyan coast has a strong tectonic influence and it is difficult to describe the coast in terms of emergence or submergence only. It can therefore be concluded that the geomorphology of...

Influence of mesoscale atmospheric forcing on mean sea level at Piraquara, RJ OceanDocs
Uaissone, A.J.R..
The work refers to variations of the mean sea level (MSL) in Piraquara (RJ) due to mesoscale atmospheric disturbances in the South and Southeast Brazil oceanic area. The sea level data were submitted to a verification and consistence process, and then they were validated with the help of predicted levels by the software Pacmaré (FRANCO, 1992). For the pressure and wind velocities, the NCEP re-analysis data was used. Thompson's low pass optimizable filter was used to remove high frequencies in the data. Differently to the habitual use of quarters of year in climatologic studies, in this work partitions of the year centered in solstice and equinox were considered. About the results of the statistical analysis in the time domain, it was seen that MSL...

Coral Reef and High Sea Level at Luhuitou, Hainan Island during the Holocene. OceanDocs
Huang, Deyin; Shi, Qi; Zhang, Yechun.
According to the field survey and 14C dating at Luhuitou, southern Hainan Island, a subsiding area, the authors conclude the high sea level history recorded by coral reef in the Holocene. At least 4 sea level high-stands can be identified from the distribution of coral reef ages: 7300 - 6000 cal.aBP, 4800 - 4700 cal.aBP, 4300 - 4200 cal.aBP and 3100 - 2900 cal.aBP. The highest sea level occurred around 7300 - 6700 cal.aBP, and biological-morphological zones took their shape during the stage. The later coral reefs developed in ponds, depressions, and developed outwards on both sides of Luhuitou peninsula. The modern coral reefs are developing in out reef flat and reef-front slope. Moreover, the time of high sea levels in the northern South China Sea...

Some Considerations on the Variability of Sea Level Synoptic Component in the Gulf of Batabanó. OceanDocs
Hernández González, M.; Díaz Llanes, G..
Abstract: An analysis of sea level synoptic variations in the Gulf of Batabanó is carried out starting from data of direct measurements. Spectral analysis is applied. It is corroborated with new elements the prevalence of meteorological variations in part of the southwestern shelf, and the spectral structure of this shelf is characterized. The influence of meteorological factors is evaluated. It is demonstrated the influence exerted by the southern component of the wind on this variations. There are signs of the possible influence of ENSO on sea level monthly variability at La Coloma; and there is a great similarity between this variability and that of Siboney.

The Role of Sea-Level Rise in the Formation of Peatlands in Maputaland OceanDocs
Grundling, P.L..
Peatlands act as information traps; archives reflecting changes in climate and environment, through pollen assemblages, sediment facies, plant fibre and C14 dating. The investigation of Maputaland peatlands presents an ideal opportunity to understand these changes during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene. The Maputaland peatlands in South Africa could be geographically divided into two distribution areas based on age: The Holocene age peatlands northwards of the Mkuze River inflow into Lake St. Lucia and the Late Pleistocene age peatlands south of this inflow. The grouping of peat thicknesses versus peat ages in a scatter diagram indicates distribution deviations from the ideal accumulation line. These might represent periods of low or negative growth and...

Caracterización del régimen de mareas y corrientes a lo largo del canal Moraleda (43° 54' S - 45° 17' S) OceanDocs
Fierro, J.; Bravo, M.; Castillo, M..
Sea level and currents in “Boca del Guafo” and Moraleda channel are studied using statististical and Fourier (harmonic) analyses. The data were collected using oceanographic instruments that covered a wide geographical area, from the northern most point of Moraleda channel to Darwin channel. The results of the harmonic analysis indicated that the area has a semidiurnal tide with a 12-minute phase shift between the ports of Melinka and Lagunas. This result shows that the tidal wave does not only propagate along the Moraleda channel, but at the same time enters the region through several transversal channels that connect the Pacific Ocean with the Moraleda channel. Along the main channel (Moraleda) no reverse current was recorded, which is an unusual...

Some ecological factors affecting coral reef assemblages off Hurghada, Red Sea, Egypt OceanDocs
Mohamed, T.A.A.; Mohamed, A.M..
Three shallow reef sites were investigated during four seasons Autumn, 2003, Winter, Spring and Summer, 2004) off the Marine Biological Station at Hurghada, Red Sea, Egypt. Thirty-eight scleractinian coral species were recorded at the studied sites. Generally, Twenty-six species were affected by more than one factor (such as high temperature, solar radiation, sedimentation and algae), while the last twelve species remained healthy. The affected species (26 species) were divided into the following: five species were affected by combination of high temperature and direct exposure to solar radiation during the neap tide, eleven species only were affected by sedimentation and increasing algal cover and ten species were affected by high temperature, solar...

Tide analysis In The Red Sea; In Gizan and Port Sudan OceanDocs
Eltaib, Elfatih.
Tide gauge measurements recorded at two stations in the Red Sea, at Port Sudan from 1986 - 1994 and at Gizan for the period of 1992 - 1994 are used to analyze the sea level changes and tide along the east and west coast of the Red Sea, using the harmonic analysis (t tide). Meteorological parameters during the same period are used to study the response of the sea level and residual sea level to local and global forcing. The relation between sea level and forces are examined using the correlation and cross covariance analysis. The correlation and cross-covariance coe cients between sea level and sea level pressure at Port Sudan indicate that the sea level responds to atmospheric pressure as non-inverse barometer. The linear trend for the coastal area shows a...

Upper Pleistocene deposits of the Comprida Island (São Paulo State) dated by thermoluminescence method Anais da ABC (AABC)
SUGUIO,KENITIRO; TATUMI,SONIA H.; KOWATA,EMÍLIA A.; MUNITA,CASIMIRO S.; PAIVA,ROSEMEIRE P..
The Cananéia (Upper Pleistocene) and the Comprida Island (Holocene) formations, outcropping in the Comprida island (SP) have been mapped using geomorphological and lithological criteria. Only one sample of the Cananéia Formation, collected in the homonymous island in front of the Comprida Island, was beyond the limit of the standard radiocarbon method. But since the publication of the geological map of the area in 1978, there has been some doubt on the real occurrence of Pleistocene deposits in southern extremity of Comprida Island. This paper deals with the results of thermoluminescence (TL) ages of eight samples from Comprida Island, which corroborate the Pleistocene age assumed during mapping surveys of these deposits. On the other hand, possible...
