Fatigue Behaviour of Acrylic Matrix Composites: Influence of Seawater ArchiMer
Davies, Peter; Arhant, Mael.
The recent introduction of liquid acrylic thermoplastic matrix resins which can impregnate fibre reinforcements using traditional infusion moulding offers significant potential for future composite structures in marine applications, such as marine energy devices. However, to date very few results are available to evaluate the long term durability of these composites in a marine environment. This paper describes results from a series of cyclic loading tests on glass and carbon fibre reinforced acrylic composites under both tension and four point flexural loading. Tests were performed before and after aging in natural seawater. The results were compared to results for a glass/epoxy used today in marine structures, and show a lower loss of both static and...

Advances in measuring ocean salinity with an optical sensor ArchiMer
Le Menn, Marc; De La Tocnaye, J. L. De Bougrenet; Grosso, P.; Delauney, Laurent; Podeur, Christian; Brault, P.; Guillerme, O..
Absolute salinity measurement of seawater has become a key issue in thermodynamic models of the oceans. One of the most direct ways is to measure the seawater refractive index which is related to density and can therefore be related to the absolute salinity. Recent advances in high resolution position sensitive devices enable us to take advantage of small beam deviation measurements using refractometers. This paper assesses the advantages of such technology with respect to the current state-of-the-art technology. In particular, we present the resolution dependence on refractive index variations and derive the limits of such a solution for designing seawater sensors well suited for coastal and deep-sea applications. Particular attention has been paid to...

Evaluation of Basalt Fibre Composites for Marine Applications ArchiMer
Davies, Peter; Verbouwe, W..
Basalt fibres offer potential for use in marine structures, but few data exist to evaluate the influence of seawater immersion on their mechanical behaviour. This paper provides the results from a study in which basalt fibre reinforced epoxy composites were aged in natural seawater at different temperatures. Tests were performed under quasi-static and cyclic loading, first in the as-received state then after saturation in natural seawater. Results are compared to those for an E-glass reinforced composite with the same epoxy matrix. They indicate similar mechanical performance for both materials after seawater saturation.

Kinetics of conditioning layer formation on stainless steel ArchiMer
Compere, Chantal; Bellon Fontaine, M.-n.; Bertrand, P; Costa, D; Marcus, P; Poleunis, C; Pradier, C.m.; Rondot, B; Walls, M.g..
Adhesion of micro-organisms to surfaces in marine environments leads to biofouling. The deleterious effects of biofilm growth in the marine environment are numerous and include : energy losses due to increased fluid frictional resistance or to increased heat transfer resistance, risk of corrosion induced by micro-organisms, loss of optical properties, quality control and safety problems. Antifouling agents are generally used to protect surfaces from being affected by such a biofilm. These agents are toxic and can be persistent, causing harmful environmental and ecological effects. Moreover, the use of biocides and regular cleaning considerably increase the maintenance costs of marine industries. An improved knowledge of the biofilm adhesion mechanisms is...

Measurement of the isotopic composition of dissolved iron in the open ocean ArchiMer
Lacan, F.; Radic, A.; Jeandel, C.; Poitrasson, F.; Sarthou, Geraldine; Pradoux, C.; Freydier, R..
This work demonstrates for the first time the feasibility of the measurement of the isotopic composition of dissolved iron in seawater for a typical open ocean Fe concentration range (0.1-1 nM). It also presents the first data of this kind. Iron is preconcentrated using a Nitriloacetic Acid Superflow resin and purified using an AG1x4 anion exchange resin. The isotopic ratios are measured with a MC-ICPMS Neptune, coupled with a desolvator (Aridus II), using a Fe-57-Fe-58 double spike mass bias correction. Measurement precision (0.13%, 2SD) allows resolving small iron isotopic composition variations within the water column, in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean (from delta Fe-57 = -0.19 to +0.32 parts per thousand). Isotopically light iron found in...

Determination of the copper isotope composition of seawater revisited: A case study from the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Baconnais, Isabelle; Rouxel, Olivier; Dulaquais, Gabriel; Boye, Marie.
A new technique for the determination of dissolved copper isotope composition (δ65Cu) of seawater was applied to examine copper sources and internal cycling in the Mediterranean Sea. A succession of chelating resin with nitrilotriacetic acid functional groups and strong base anion exchange resin, together with optimization of the multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry set-up allowed to isolate copper from seawater matrix and to measure the 65Cu/63Cu ratios in seawater with an external precision of 0.06‰ (2 s.d.). This method was first applied for inter-comparison measurements to surface and deep waters sampled at station BATS in the North Atlantic Ocean. Disparities in δ65Cu reported here and in the literature over these samples...

Seawater samples were collected by submersible above methane seeps in the Gulf of Guinea (Regab and Baboon pockmarks) in order to investigate the behaviour of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and rare earth elements (REE) during fluid seepage. Our aim was to determine whether cold seeps may represent potential sources of dissolved chemical species to the ocean. Dissolved (<0.45 μm filtered samples) and total dissolvable (unfiltered samples) concentrations were determined over ∼50 m long vertical transects above the seafloor and at various discrete locations within the pockmarks. We show that substantial amounts of Fe and Mn are released into seawater during seepage of methane-rich fluids. Mn is exported almost quantitatively in the dissolved form (more than...

Analyse, distribution, production et dégradation d’esters de phtalates (PAEs) en zone côtière méditerranéenne ArchiMer
Paluselli, Andrea.
Phthalic Acid Esters (PAEs) are a group of emerging organic contaminants that have become a serious issue because of their ubiquitous presence on the marine environment worldwide and for the endocrine disrupting effects in animals and humans. However, little is known about their distribution in the Ocean, mainly because of analytical difficulties and the high possibility of ambient sample contamination. Plastic debris in marine environment includes resin pellets, macro- and microplastic fragments, and contains additives such as PAEs that might be released in the aquatic environment in unknown proportion. In our work, we improved an analytical method for the determination of 8 PAEs, at trace levels in marine and fresh waters. In the first part of the...

A mid-Holocene transition in the nitrogen dynamics of the western equatorial Pacific: Evidence of a deepening thermocline? ArchiMer
Kienast, M.; Lehmann, M. F.; Timmermann, A.; Galbraith, E.; Bolliet, T.; Holboum, A.; Normandeau, C.; Laj, C..
Sedimentary delta(15)N records from the oligotrophic western equatorial Pacific (WEP) off Mindanao show that late Holocene sedimentary delta(15)N is substantially lower than that of the early Holocene, following a gradual >3 parts per thousand decrease that occurred between 7 and 3 kyrs ago. Analyses of modem day nitrate isotope profiles from the same region indicate the sensitivity of the WEP N pools towards (1) the advection of (15)N-enriched nitrate from the Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) by the North Equatorial Current (NEC) and the Mindanao Current in subsurface waters and, (2) at shallow depths, the input of new and (15)N-depleted nitrate through N, fixation. We suggest that the Holocene decrease in sedimentary delta(15)N reflects a diminished...

Bailly Du Bois, Pascal; Dumas, Franck.
TRANSMER hydrodynamic model simulates dispersion of dissolved substances in seawater at the scale of the English Channel and the south of the North Sea with a mesh size of one kilometre and a time step of 30 minutes. It has been qualitatively and quantitatively validated by 1400 measurement of 125Sb in seawater. This model evaluates the medium- and long-term consequences of releases of soluble pollutants in the marine ecosystem under normal or accidental conditions, at a very low computation cost (it takes less than one hour to simulate one year).

Determination of rare earth elements and other trace elements (Y, Mn, Co, Cr) in seawater using Tm addition and Mg(OH)(2) co-precipitation ArchiMer
Freslon, Nicolas; Bayon, Germain; Birot, Dominique; Bollinger, Claire; Barrat, Jean-alix.
This paper reports on a novel procedure for determining trace element abundances (REE and Y, Cr, Mn, Co) in seawater by inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometry (ICP-SFMS). The procedure uses a combination of pre-concentration using co-precipitation onto magnesium hydroxides and addition of thulium spike. The validity of the method was assessed onto 25 ml volumes of certified reference materials (NASS- and CASS-4) and in house seawater standard. Procedural blanks were determined by applying the same procedure to aliquots of seawater previously depleted in trace elements by successive Mg(OH)(2) co-precipitations, yielding estimated contributions to the studied samples better than 1.1% for all elements, with the exception of Cr (<3.3%)...

Trace metals assessment in water, sediment, mussel and seagrass species - Validation of the use of Posidonia oceanica as a metal biomonitor ArchiMer
Lafabrie, Céline; Pergent, G; Kantin, Roger; Pergent Martini, C; Gonzalez, Jean-louis.
The accumulation of trace metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb) was measured in water, sediment, the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Samples were collected in three locations of the north-western Mediterranean (Canari, Livorno and Porto-Torres) which present different levels and sources of human impact. Analyses in the different compartments (water, sediment, M. galloprovincialis and P. oceanica) have allowed to identify Canari as the most Cd, Co, Cr and Ni contaminated site; Livorno as the most Hg contaminated and Porto-Torres as the most Pb contaminated. Furthermore, for the first time, metal concentrations found in P. oceanica have been compared with those found in the water column, in the sediment and in the...

Le Menn, Monique; Malardé, Damien; David, Arnaud; Brault, Patrice; Grosso, Philippe; De Bougrenet De La Tocnaye, Jean-louis; Le Reste, Serge; Podeur, Christian.
Salinity is the essential parameter for ocean dynamics studies. Its definition and using in the equations used to calculate the thermodynamic properties of seawater, were revised in 2010, opening the possibility of new sensors developments. In this context, NOSS (NKE Optical Salinity Sensor) has emerged as one of the first underwater instrument for in situ refractive index measurement in the past years open up the scope of possibilities to access to density parameter. This achievement is the fruit of the cooperation between several institutions and the fruit of several years of developments and trials. NOSS sensor is designed to be deployed in coastal environment and open-ocean waters up to 2000m, especially on profiling floats of the Argo network.

Analysis of hydrogen and methane in seawater by “Headspace” method: Determination at trace level with an automatic headspace sampler ArchiMer
Donval, Jean-pierre; Guyader, Vivien.
“Headspace” technique is one of the methods for the onboard measurement of hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4) in deep seawater. Based on the principle of an automatic headspace commercial sampler, a specific device has been developed to automatically inject gas samples from 300 ml syringes (gas phase in equilibrium with seawater). As valves, micro pump, oven and detector are independent, a gas chromatograph is not necessary allowing a reduction of the weight and dimensions of the analytical system. The different steps from seawater sampling to gas injection are described. Accuracy of the method is checked by a comparison with the “purge and trap” technique. The detection limit is estimated to 0.3 nM for hydrogen and 0.1 nM for methane which is close to the...

Influence of Seawater Ageing on Fracture of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Composites for Ocean Engineering ArchiMer
Le Guen-geffroy, Antoine; Davies, Peter; Le Gac, Pierre Yves; Habert, Bertrand.
Carbon fiber reinforced composite materials are finding new applications in highly loaded marine structures such as tidal turbine blades and marine propellers. Such applications require long-term damage resistance while being subjected to continuous seawater immersion. However, few data exist on which to base material selection and design. This paper provides a set of results from interlaminar fracture tests on specimens before and after seawater ageing. The focus is on delamination as this is the main failure mechanism for laminated composites under out-of-plane loading. Results show that there are two contributions to changes in fracture toughness during an accelerated wet ageing program: effects due to water and effects due to physical ageing. These are...

Evidence for intense REE scavenging at cold seeps from the Niger Delta margin ArchiMer
Bayon, Germain; Birot, Dominique; Ruffine, Livio; Caprais, Jean-claude; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Bollinger, C.; Donval, Jean-pierre; Charlou, Jean-luc; Voisset, Michel; Grimaud, S..
For many trace elements, continental margins are the location of intense exchange processes between sediment and seawater, which control their distribution in the water column, but have yet to be fully understood. In this study, we have investigated the impact of fluid seepage at cold seeps on the marine cycle of neodymium. We determined dissolved and total dissolvable (TD) concentrations for REE and well-established tracers of fluid seepage (CH4, TDFe, TDMn), and Nd isotopic compositions in seawater samples collected above cold seeps and a reference site (i.e. away from any fluid venting area) from the Niger Delta margin. We also analyzed cold seep authigenic phases and various core-top sediment fractions (pore water, detrital component, easily leachable...

Among other results, it was found that when hake is handied property it maintains good quality levels up to 10 days after catch, irrespective of season. Its total storage life in boxes with ice is approximately two weeks. Although total storage life remained unchanged, it was found that quality levels tended to be significantly higher if overfilling of boxes was avoided, if the fish was gutted immediately after catch, or if hake was stored in containers with seawater.

SALT TOLERANT PLANTS AS A VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR SUSTAINABLE FOOD PRODUCTION IN ARID AND SALINE COASTAL ZONES Acta biol.Colomb.
HOLGUIN PEÑA,Ramón Jaime; MEDINA HERNÁNDEZ,Diana; GHASEMI,Mojtaba; RUEDA PUENTE,Edgar Omar.
ABSTRACT This review focuses on the potential of halophytes for food, fodder and biofuels production, as well as their impacts on the environment and societies. Moreover, to open new areas in production systems using novel technologies such as halophytes in a desert agriculture. We are faced with the crisis and the shortage of freshwater in arid, semi-arid and desert regions. For this reason, we have to apply sustainable systems for human food, fodder and biofuels. Halophytes are naturally resistant to salt and develop on the coastal coast and arid-saline areas. We present a complete summary of the current situation of human population growth and food demand, a sustainable alternative such as halophilic crops of agro-industrial importance compared with...
