Accurately characterizing the biology of a pelagic shark species is critical when assessing its status and resilience to fishing pressure. Natural mortality (M) is well known to be a key parameter determining productivity and resilience, but also one for which estimates are most uncertain. While M can be inferred from life history, validated direct estimates are extremely rare for sharks. Porbeagle (Lamna nasus) and shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) are presently overfished in the North Atlantic, but there are no directed fisheries and successful live release of bycatch is believed to have increased. Within European waters, the landing obligations that are currently being phased in as part of the European Union's reformed common fisheries policy means that an increasing number of fish stocks, with certain exceptions, should not be discarded unless it can be demonstrated that there is a high probability of survival. Some mechanisms of selection which operate on marine Vibrio and Pseudomonas strains during survival in dilute environments have been examined. Mannitol uptake and utilisation systems are more efficient in the Vibrio strain compared with the Pseudomonas strain during starvation survival. A Vibrio mutant strain lacking mannitol uptake showed no greater loss of viability during starvation survival than mannitol positive strains. The Vibrio strain appears to be constitutive with respect to mannitol uptake systems, whereas the Pseudomonas strain examined is inducible. The survival rate of Nephrops escaping through the cod-end was recently studied in the Bay of Biscay. Over the 45mm meshed cod-end was put a 15mm meshed net in order to retain the Nephrops escaping though, the cod-end. Soon after hauling escaped Nephrops were returned on the sea-bed into cages. After an inversion of 60-78 hours, the average survived rate was about 70 %. However it was found increasing with the size of individuals. The value obtained, which is only a result of- the action oh several factors, may be lower than the true value. In western Europe, common pochard populations have experienced a sharp decline over the last two decades, together with an increasing proportion of males. Both of these changes were suggested to result from decreasing survival of nesting females (i.e. survival of adult females) owing to increasing predation pressure. To test this hypothesis, we used capture–mark–recapture/recovery data of common pochard ringed during autumn–winter (October–February) in three countries of western Europe (Switzerland, United Kingdom and France). Despite larval robustness characterized by the absence of metamorphosis and readiness for exogenous feeding based on commercial feed, the spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) displays highly variable survival at first-feeding. In this study, we investigated the use of three dietary concentrations of protein hydrolysates (PH, pre-digested proteins) (0, 10 and 20%) when newly hatched juvenile wolffish were held at three different rearing temperatures namely, 5, 8 and 12 degrees C to determine whether digestion of protein was a limiting factor for fish growth and survival. Microplastics are present in marine habitats worldwide and may be ingested by low trophic organisms such as fish larvae, with uncertain physiological consequences. The present study aims at assessing the impact of polyethylene (PE 10-45µM) microbeads ingestion in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae. Fish were fed an inert diet including 0, 104 and 105 fluorescent microbeads per gram from 7 until 43 days post-hatching (dph). Microbeads were detected in the gastrointestinal tract in all fish fed diet incorporating PE. Response to divergent selection for "high" and "low" survival during the summer period, from July to October, was investigated in juvenile (six-month-old) Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, by producing two sets of progenies in 2002 (Generation 2) and three sets of progenies in 2003 (Generation 3). A strict between-family approach was used and resistance of these selected progenies to summer mortality was assessed in three sites along French coasts, to determine their response to selection and estimate realized heritability of the trait. Marine shrimps absorb minerals from their aquatic environment aside from the minerals that come from the food they eat. Thus, the dietary requirement of shrimps for certain minerals will depend on the amounts and availability of these minerals in the aquatic environment. Links between patterns of marine growth and survival of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, L. ArchiMer

The hypothesis that marine survival of Atlantic salmon Salmo Salar is linked to marine growth was explored by using inter-circuli distances and total numbers of circuli existing on scales from a population monitored over nearly four decades. The results suggest that marine growth controls survival, particularly during the late summer and early winter of the first year at sea. Recruitment is strongly linked to growth, described as the total number of circuli, but not to inter-circuli distances. This highlights the potential of patterns of circuli number to be considered as proxies for growth. To improve the knowledge of the survival of enteric viruses in a marine environment, the influence of physico-chemical parameters (temperature, UV, salinity) on the survival of infectious poliovirus 1 and hepatitis A Virus (HAV) in seawater was first studied, the influence of suspended solids (SS) on poliovirus adsorption and survival in seawater was then evaluated and the detection of rotavirus genome in environmental samples (shellfish, river water, treated wastewater) was finally investigated. Massive spring mortality outbreaks have been reported in Mytilus spp. in France since 2014. The main areas affected are the Pertuis Charentais Sounds and the coast of the Pays de la Loire, which cultivate mainly M. edulis, and the putative causal agents remain unknown. We report the results of the first generation of mass selection focused on survival and resistance to the spring mortality in M. edulis. Review of grow-out techniques under tropical conditions: Experience of Thailand on seabass (Lates calcarifer ) and grouper (Epinephelus malabaricus) ArchiMer

Seabass and grouper have been reared in cages in coastal waters in Thailand for 10 years. The fingerlings are nursed for a month in nylon nursing cages. Then, the juvenile fish are reared in culture cages which can be stationary or floating. The cage is usually 5 x 5 x 2 metres. The stocking density is around 500 to 2000 fish per cage. The survival rate is approximately 80%. The selling price at the culture site is 80 baht and 250 baht per kg for sea bass and grouper respectively. The culture method and economics of culture are explained.

Metabolism of CO and CH sub(4) by nitrifiers and the determination of the nitrification rate. ArchiMer

The nitrifying bacteria were found to survive 24 weeks in the absence of ammonium without decreasing their number of cell size. Because H sub(2), CO, and CH sub(4) are present in the marine environment, these substrates were investigated as a possible source of the energy of maintenance for the nitrifying bacteria. super(14)CO and super(14)CH sub(4) were found to be oxidized by the nitrifiers. N-serve was found to inhibit the oxidation of CO. Using the nitrifiers' ability to oxide CO, a method for the determination of the nitrification rate was developed. Protein requirements of Penaeid shrimp. ArchiMer

Proteins are indispensable nutrients for growth and maintenance of live of all animals. The optimum protein levels in diets for shrimps are different among the various species. Squid meal is an effective protein source for many penaeids. The effects of dietary protein, lipid, and carbohydrate levels on the growth and survival of larvae of Penaeus japonicus were examined by feeding trials using purified diet with carrageenan as a binder. As a result, the effects of protein levels on growth and survival of P. japonicus larvae varied with dietary carbohydrate levels but not dietary lipid levels.

All these parameters are not still well controlled during the artificial conditioning in the hatcheries. Etude de la composition corporelle de la sole (Solea solea ) au cours du jeune: Influence de la temperature ArchiMer

The effects of starvation on Solea solea at 10 and 20 degree C in sea water, were studied. At 20 degree C fishes start to die on week 4; at 10 degree C they support a longer starvation period (9 weeks). Proximate analysis shows that protein are more steadily used at 20 degree C than at 10 degree C, contrarily to the corporal lipids which are used at the same rate. Starvation results in a reduction of liver lipids and glycogen. This reduction is more pronounced at 20 degree C : 70% of hepatic glycogen is used at this temperature within the first week of starvation against 30% at 10 degree C.
