Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) increases the expression of endothelial adhesion/junction molecules BJM
Marks,Fernanda S.; Almeida,Laura L.; Driemeier,David; Canal,Cláudio; Barcellos,David E.S.N.; Guimarães,Jorge A.; Reck,José.
Abstract Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is the primary causative agent of porcine circovirus disease, a complex multisystem syndrome in domestic pigs. Despite the significant economic losses caused by porcine circovirus disease, the mechanisms of pathogenesis underlying the clinical findings remain largely unclear. As various reports have highlighted the potential key role of vascular lesions in the pathogenesis of porcine circovirus disease, the aim of this work was to investigate effects of PCV2 infection on vascular endothelial cells, focusing on cell viability and expression of adhesion/junction molecules. PCV2 infection reduced endothelial cell viability, while viral infection did not affected the viability of several other classical cell lines....

Characterization of Aujeszky's disease virus isolates from South and Southeast Brazil by RFLP analysis BJM
Piatti,Rosa Maria; Ikuno,Alice Akimi; Cunha,Elenice Sequetin; D'Ambros,Régia; Gregori,Fábio; Soares,Rodrigo Martins; Cortez,Adriana; Richtzenhain,Leonardo José.
The genomic DNA of thirty strains of Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV) isolated in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil from 1982 to 1996 were characterized by restriction endonuclease analysis with BamHI. Twenty seven strains were isolated from pigs, 1 from cattle, 1 from cat and 1 from dog. Using a systematization previously described, the 30 ADV strains could be classified as genomic types I (n = 2) and II (n = 28). Genomic type III was not observed. In this first study of genomic type characterization of brazilian ADV strains, we could demonstrate the occurence in Brazil of the genomic types I and II, with a large predominance of genomic type II.

Hepatitis E virus antibodies in swine herds of Mato Grosso state, Central Brazil BJM
Guimarães,Flávio R.; Saddi,Thelma M.; Vitral,Cláudia Lamarca; Pinto,Marcelo A.; Gaspar,Ana Maria C.; Souto,Francisco José D..
There is no information about evidence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in swines in Central Brazil. In order to assess if HEV circulates in swines of the State of Mato Grosso, Central Brazil, a seroprevalence study was conducted including pigs from 17 farms, corresponding to 13 counties. The animals were randomly chosen among pigs arriving to two slaughterhouses between December 2002 and February 2003. Serum samples were collected and tested for IgG antibodies against HEV (anti-HEV) by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). This EIA uses two HEV recombinant proteins as antigens, a mosaic protein (MP-II) and a protein containing region 452-617 of the ORF2 of the HEV Burma strain as coating antigens. 211 out of 260 pigs (81.2%; 95CI = 75.7%, 85.6%) were anti-HEV...

Predicting the metabolizable energy of first and second corn harvests for piglets Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Esteves,Lucas Antonio Costa; Oliveira,Newton Tavares Escocard de; Huepa,Laura Marcela Diaz; Ferreira,Silvia Letícia; Castilha,Leandro Dalcin; Pozza,Paulo Cesar.
ABSTRACT Corn is one of the primary ingredients in swine diets, but there is a variation in its chemical composition and metabolizable energy (ME) content. Therefore, faster methods are required that can determine more accurate ME values to improve piglet diets. This study determined and predicted the ME of corn from first and second harvests for piglets. Two experiments were conducted to determine the ME values for 18 corn batches, evaluating corn from first and second harvests. The corn batches were analysed to determine the concentration of dry matter (DM), starch (ST), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), ash, calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P) and gross energy (GE). To determine the ME values, 40...

Clostridium perfringens: a review of the disease in pigs, horses and broiler chickens Ciência Rural
Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Oliveira Junior,Carlos Augusto; Guedes,Roberto Maurício Carvalho; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
Clostridium perfringens is a gram-positive, anaerobic, fermentative, spore-forming bacillus that may be found in the environment but is more commonly found as part of the microbiota of humans and animals. The bacterium is considered a common enteric pathogen; however, the pathogenesis and predisposing factors of the disease can differ among species. Therefore, specific studies are necessary for understanding the role of this pathogen, how to diagnose it and which control measures are applicable. The aim of this paper is to review the current knowledge regarding C. perfringens infections in pigs, horses and broiler chickens

Samples of intestine with necrotic enteritis from 63 pigs naturally infected with porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) were studied. Colon was the main target of PCV2 associated necrotic enteritis in 60 cases. Immunohistological investigations were carried out to detect the presence of PCV2 in necrotic lesions and to identify the type of cells infected by the virus. Crypt epithelial cells had positive labelling for PCV2 in 17 cases. Depletion of goblet cells occurred in 10 cases. In 24 necrotic enteritis cases, co-infection of PCV2 and Salmonella was identified. An increased rate of apoptosis in the crypt epithelial cells of the large intestine from PCV2 of naturally infected pigs was observed. Immunohistochemical findings confirmed the presence of PCV2 within...

Assessment of a segregated medicated early weaning protocol for elimination of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae Ciência Rural
Tamiozzo,Pablo Jesús; Carranza,Alicia Isabel; Pelliza,Bibiana Rosa; Parada,Julián; Ambrogi,Arnaldo.
ABSTRACT: To assess the success of a segregated medicated early weaning protocol for elimination of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, ten consecutive batches of 100 pigs per batch weaned at 7-9 days of age were monitored at 21-22 weeks of age looking for presence of productive cough, presence of antibodies against the agent and pleuropneumonia-compatible lung lesions at slaughter. Also, whole tonsils were processed for A. pleuropneumoniae identification by both bacteriological isolation and nested-PCR using a direct method. Positive serological test (1.4%) and PCR (3.5%) results, suggested that A. pleuropneumoniae could not be eradicated in all batches, even using segregated medicated early weaning protocol.
