Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the anthracnose intensity in ‘Prata-Anã’ banana with the application of three phosphite formulations in two application intervals in the developing banana bunches and to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of fruits. In the field, in addition to producer management, three phosphite formulations were evaluated: FCu1 (4% Cu + 20% P2O5), FCu2 (4% Cu + 22% P2O5) and FK (42% P2O5 + 27.7% K2O) sprayed on banana bunches at different application frequencies: four and eight times. The experiment was carried out in a randomized blocks design following a 5 x 2 factorial scheme, with 3 phosphite formulations, pure water and no application and two application intervals. Pure water and no application were...

Nitrogen removal from swine wastewater by combining treated effluent with raw manure Scientia Agricola
Kunz,Airton; Steinmetz,Ricardo; Damasceno,Simone; Coldebela,Arlei.
Effluents from swine raising can be harmful to the environment if not correctly managed. Nitrogen (N) is usually the main element present at high concentrations in the effluent. Since the use as biofertilizer is not always a feasible alternative, the treatment of swine wastewater is necessary. Variations in N species and water solubility make the treatment difficult and expensive. Additional N removal at low cost via denitrification may be possible by recirculating nitrified effluent in the barns. In this study, raw manure (RM) was homogenized with treated effluent (TE) at RM/(RM + TE) ratios of 1.0, 0.9, 0.8, 0.7, 0.6, 0.5 and 0 in order to simulate the effect of reused water on swine wastewater nitrogen removal. Samples were collected daily during four...

Design and Construction of an Affordable Potable Water Treatment Unit for Domestic Usage CIGR Journal
Isikwue, Martins Okechukwu; Ato, Jeremiah A.; Ayua, Isaac T..
An affordable potable water treatment unit was designed and constructed. The components were coagulation unit, sedimentation unit, slow sand filter unit, utraviolet unit and the storage unit. Filtrate from the chamber was compared with International acceptable standards. The result showed that the treatment chamber proved effective and can produce at least 100 litres of portable water per day. The physical and chemical parameters monitored were reduced to the acceptable limit by WHO (World Health Organisation), NAFDAC(National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control) Nigeria and Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ). However, coliform was not totally removed but the count was reduced by 99.4%.

Short and long period optimization of drug doses in the treatment of AIDS Anais da ABC (AABC)
CAETANO,MARCO A. L.; YONEYAMA,TAKASHI.
Numerical optimization techniques are useful in solving problems of computing the best inputs for systems described by mathematical models and when the objectives can be stated in a quantitative form. This work concerns the problem of optimizing the drug doses in the treatment of AIDS in terms of achieving a balance between the therapeutic response and the side effects. A mathematical model describing the dynamics of HIV viruses and CD4 cells is used to compute the short term optimal drug doses in the treatments of patients with AIDS by a direct method of optimization using a cost function of Bolza type. The model parameters were fitted to actual published clinical data. In order to simplify the numerical procedures, the control law is expressed as a...

Mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders Anais da ABC (AABC)
COLPO,GABRIELA D.; ASCOLI,BRUNA M.; WOLLENHAUPT-AGUIAR,BIANCA; PFAFFENSELLER,BIANCA; SILVA,EMILY G.; CIRNE-LIMA,ELIZABETH O.; QUEVEDO,JOÃO; KAPCZINSKI,FLÁVIO; ROSA,ADRIANE R..
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent progenitor cells that have the capacity to differentiate into all lineages of mesodermal origin, e.g., cartilage, bone, and adipocytes. MSCs have been identified at different stages of development, including adulthood, and in different tissues, such as bone marrow, adipose tissue and umbilical cord. Recent studies have shown that MSCs have the ability to migrate to injured sites. In this regard, an important characteristic of MSCs is their immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. For instance, there is evidence that MSCs can regulate the immune system by inhibiting proliferation of T and B cells. Clinical interest in the use of MSCs has increased considerably over the past few years, especially because...

Osteoarthritis in horses - Part 2: a review of the intra-articular use of corticosteroids as a method of treatment BABT
Souza,Maria Verônica de.
ABSTRACT: The problem considered in this review is related to the frequent use of corticosteroids (COs) (i.e. steroids) in the practice of equine medicine and surgery as a therapeutic strategy in the treatment of degenerative joint disease, commonly known as osteoarthritis (OA). This disease is one of the most common among the equine musculoskeletal diseases, and is clinically characterized by pain, lameness, joint effusion at the initial stage, which usually reduces with the progression of the disease, and reduced physical performance. Although steroids are considered excellent drugs in the control of clinical signs resulting from osteoarthritis, they also influence cellular activity through activation of various signaling mechanisms. However, they can...

Successful treatment of vancomycin-resistant enterococcus ventriculitis in a child BJID
Silva,Paulo Sérgio Lucas da; Monteiro Neto,Henrique; Sejas,Lílian Márcia.
Enterococci are an uncommon cause of CNS infection. A 20 month-old boy, diagnosed with hydrocephalus with ventriculoperitoneal shunt and history of lengthy hospitalization and use of wide spectrum antibiotics, was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit diagnosed with ventriculitis. On the 14th day of empirical antibiotic therapy (vancomycin and meropenem) the child presented fever while the CSF sample culture evidenced vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium. The patient received intravenous linezolid achieving cerebrospinal fluid sterilization. Conclusion: Intravenous linezolid appears to be a safe and effective therapy for vancomycin-resistant enterococcus ventriculoperitoneal shunt infection.

Are anti-interferon antibodies the cause of failure in: chronic HCV hepatitis treatment? BJID
Barone,Antonio Alci; Tosta,Rose Aparecida Borges; Tengan,Fátima Mitiko; Marins,José Humberto Caetano; Cavalheiro,Norma de Paula; Cardi,Bruno Andrade.
A follow-up study was made of 94 chronic hepatitis C patients at a hepatitis clinic in Brazil, after interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) therapy, to determine the influence of anti-interferon antibodies on treatment outcome. Patients diagnosed as having chronic hepatitis C, confirmed by PCR (HCV RNA) and liver biopsy, were treated with interferon alpha 2a or 2b for at least six months, and were followed up for 24 weeks after termination of treatment in order to assess biochemical, virological and clinical pathology responses. Only 6% of the 94 patients developed anti-IFN antibodies, 70% presented a biochemical response and 23% maintained a sustained virological response. Clinical evaluation revealed that in only 2 patients was there progression of fibrosis; the...

Antibiotics for the empirical treatment of acute infectious diarrhea in children BJID
Diniz-Santos,Daniel R.; Silva,Luciana R.; Silva,Nanci.
While the routine use of antibiotics for infectious diarrhea in children must be avoided, because it brings little benefit in most cases and is associated with the risk of increasing antimicrobial resistance, selected cases may require antimicrobial therapy, and the choice of the antimicrobial agent often has to be made empirically. Physicians prescribing antimicrobials in such a setting have not only to be aware of the most likely pathogens, but also of their characteristic antimicrobial susceptibility pattern and the safety profile of the various drugs. We reviewed the literature on the use of ampicillin, beta-lactamase inhibitors, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, chloramphenicol, tetracyclines, nalidixic acid, fluoroquinolones, third-generation...

Candida infections account for 80% of all fungal infections in the hospital environment, including bloodstream, urinary tract and surgical site infections. Bloodstream infections are now a major challenge for tertiary hospitals worldwide due to their high prevalence and mortality rates. The incidence of candidemia in tertiary public hospitals in Brazil is approximately 2.5 cases per 1000 hospital admissions. Due to the importance of this infection, the authors provide a review of the diversity of the genus Candida and its clinical relevance, the therapeutic options and discuss the treatment of major infections caused by Candida. Each topography is discussed with regard to epidemiological, clinical and laboratory diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations...

Detection of HCV by PCR in serum and PBMC of patients with hepatitis C after treatment BJID
Cavalheiro,Norma de Paula; Filgueiras,Thelma Cristina; Melo,Carlos Eduardo; Morimitsu,Suzana Rie; Araújo,Evaldo Stanislau Affonso de; Tengan,Fátima Mitiko; Barone,Antonio Alci.
Although hepatitis C is mainly hepatotropic, some studies suggest that hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), using them as a reservoir, which might contribute to the development of resistance to treatment. Fifty-four hepatitis-C patients, who had been submitted to treatment, were selected. Blood samples were collected on the same day for the detection of HCV RNA in serum and PBMC by PCR, using the Amplicor HCV 2.0 assay (Roche Diagnostics). HCV genotyping was performed using the INNO-LiPA HCV kit (Versant, Bayer Diagnostics). HCV RNA was detected in both serum and PBMC in 35 (64%) patients and no RNA in 16 (29.6%). Disagreement between the serum and PBMC results was observed for three patients (5.6%), with HCV RNA being...
