Many consumers lack insight into today’s complex food production systems. This paper investigates the relationship between consumer confidence in the safety of food in general and consumer trust in particular institutions and organisations. The first aim of the study was to develop and validate a scale to measure general consumer confidence in the safety of food. Voluntary Traceability and Transaction Costs: An Empirical Analysis in the Italian Meat Processing Supply Chain AgEcon

This paper analyses voluntary traceability effects on the coordination of the food supply chain from the transaction cost perspective. The analysis concerns Italian firms and makes particular reference to the meat sector. A survey was conducted by questionnaire to assess the changes in key transaction factors and costs after the introduction of traceability. The results underline an increase in the degree of human, material and site asset specificity, and reveal a reduction in the degree of uncertainty in transactions. Growth in some transaction costs related to monitoring is also observed. Factorial and cluster analysis were used to underline the different organisational solutions of the firms.

The influence of migration processes on rural development: a case study from Scotland AgEcon

In the past, much rural development planning has relied on the concept of growth poles. With the “new rural paradigm”, we find that place-specific development and bottom-up approaches have become more popular than ever. Such place-based development often envisages the use of social capital. However, insofar as social capital is a local asset that is incorporated in individuals, it can easily be destroyed but not easily rebuilt. Continued out-migration and low in-migration into rural areas can have detrimental effects on social capital, and subsequently weaken bottom-up processes in the short and medium term. Malpractice in food production entails unacceptable procedures and undesirable product qualities and other negative material outcomes. Despite their physical implications, behavioural sources of risk have become known as moral hazards. The probability of malpractice increases with attached profits. It decreases with the probability of disclosure and resulting losses. It also decreases with social values, emotional bonds etc. which prevent food producers from yielding to economic temptations. Social Capital and the Food System: Some Evidences from Empirical Research AgEcon

The paper stresses that in order to understand the current re-organizational processes in the food system, two kinds of social capital should be taken into account, trust and network-based social capital. Stemming from a case study, concerning the Italian processing tomato industry, it demonstrates that while trust seems to enhance social welfare, by reducing transaction costs and promoting cooperative behavior, network-based social capital mainly affects firm competitive behavior, with unpredictable effects on social welfare.

THE IMPACT OF TRUST ON COOPERATIVE MEMBERSHIP PERFORMANCE AND SATISFACTION IN THE HUNGARIAN HORTICULTURE AgEcon

The paper investigates the impacts of trust on the relationships among members and between members and the management in an agricultural marketing cooperative in the Hungarian horticultural sector. We focus on the effects of trust on cooperative members’ performance and satisfaction and their commitment to remaining a part of cooperative. We analyse the trust along two dimensions: cognitive and affective. Our results suggest that trust among cooperative members and trust between cooperative and management have positive effects on group cohesions. In line with a priori hypotheses we found differences between cognitive and affective trust influencing the group cohesion and cooperative members’ satisfaction.

Contracts, trust and market environment in farmer-buyer relationships AgEcon

This study identified and validated key constructs underlying supply chain management research: contract, trust and environment. In total, 22 items were retained to measure six dimensions for the three core concepts. Using data from a sample of Chinese vegetable and fruit farmers, we found empirical support for a complementary relationships between contract and trust. Moreover, our results also indicated a positive relationship between environmental uncertainty and the degree of using contracts.

Are Traditional Cooperatives an Endangered species? About Shrinking Satisfaction, Involvement and Trust AgEcon

Several researchers, who have observed that traditional cooperatives have difficulties in modern markets, mention a number of behavioral concepts characterizing the members. This study attempts to empirically test these concepts. It is based on a survey among members of a large traditional Swedish cooperative. The members perceive the cooperative to be so large and complex that they have difficulties understanding the operations. Hence, they become dissatisfied and uninvolved, and they mistrust the leadership. Moreover, they do not believe that the cooperative can be remodeled to strengthen member control. The findings support the behavioral explanations presented in prior studies.

Trust is modelled as either enforceable or intrinsic. Antecedents of trust in history, human nature, personality and culture are analyzed. Building trust in agri-food chains: the mediating role of effective communication AgEcon

Using recent survey data (n = 1,430) on trust levels in agri-food supplier-buyer relationships in six different European countries, two commodity chains (meat and cereals) and two chain stages (farmer-processor and processor-retailer), main determinants of trust are identified and discussed. The structural equation modelling estimation results indicate that trust can be significantly improved by effective communication and by a positive collaboration experience. It is becoming increasingly difficult for the general public to attempt to assess risks using traditional methods such as smell, taste or other physical attributes of food. The existence of extrinsic cues such as the country of origin (COO) of food can help to make food purchase decisions easier for consumers. In this paper a consumer food choice model based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) is extended to account for risk perception and trust. The data are from a nationally representative European survey of 2 725 respondents from five countries, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The model relates the intention to purchase chicken in an extended TPB framework, which incorporates risk perceptions, and trust in alternative sources of food safety information. Concern about humanitarian crises in southern Africa, especially in light of the surge in world food prices since 2007, has been accompanied by calls for direct government action in food markets. This paper reviews how Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique handled private food markets during the food crises of 2001/02, 2002/03, and 2005/06, which may provide important lessons for the management of future crises.
