Ultrastructural Aspects of Spermatogenesis in Phalloceros caudimaculatus (Teleostei, Poeciliidae) International Journal of Morphology
Vicentini,Carlos Alberto; Muñoz,Mario Esteban; Vicentini,Irene Bastos Franceschini.
The aim of the present study was to analyze the ultrastructural aspects of spermatogenesis in Phalloceros caudimaculatus, during cell proliferation. The parenchyma is organized morphologically as lobular restricted spermatogonial testis. Spermiogenesis in this species is characterized by four morphological stages of development (spermatids S1 through S4). The mature spermatids and spermatozoa heads are situated at the periphery of the cyst surrounded by the cytoplasm of the Sertoli cells. The germ cell's ultrastructure and spermatogenesis in P. caudimaculatus are very similar to that of other poeciliids.

Ultrastructure of Fetal Mice Hepatocytes Exposed in Utero to Diazepam International Journal of Morphology
Márquez-Orozco,María Cristina; de la Fuente-Juárez,Graciela; Márquez-Orozco,Amalia.
Previous research has shown that fetal mice hepatic cells from females treated with diazepam (Valium) during pregnancy depict cytoplasmic and nuclear modifications when observed with photonic microscope. The purpose of this work is to investigate if diazepam administered subcutaneously (SC) to pregnant mice females induces ultraestructural alterations in the cytoplasmic organelles and nucleus to fetal hepatocytes. Transmission electron microscopy observations of fetal hepatocytes from pregnant females treated with a single daily dose of diazepam 2.7 mg/kg/bw/SC administered from 6th to 15th days of gestation revealed that they frequently presented disorganized and dilated rough endoplasmic reticulum cisterns, membranous elements, abundant Golgi complex and...

New and Probable Ultrastructural Criteria for Identification of Cytoplasmic Sol Gel States International Journal of Morphology
Hipkaeo,Wiphawi; Kondo,Hisatake.
In embedment-free transmission electron microscopy without employing epoxy embedding media, the cytoplasmic matrix, in which cell organelles and elements including the cytoskeletons are held in place, lattices of strands are clearly and constantly disclosed in every cell. Their compactness is variable in different kinds of cells and in different domains of one and the same cell, and it is changeable under hypo- or hyper-osmolarity. In addition, the appearance of strand-lattices is duplicable in artificial proteins at different sol/gel states and concentrations. All taken together, a new and probable ultrastructural criteria has been proposed for identification of cytoplasmic sol/gel states with a hope that the dynamic properties of the cell is understood...

Morphological Features of the Apical Region in the Principal Cells of Mongrel Dog Epididymis International Journal of Morphology
Schimming,Bruno Cesar; Vicentini,Carlos Alberto.
The epithelial principal cells are the predominant cell type of the epididymis. These cells have been shown to be both secretory and endocytic cells. The apical region of the cytoplasm of principal cells in the mongrel dog are located close to the cell apex and tubular lumen, and shown microvilli at the luminal border and present a endocytic apparatus, that consists of coated pits and vesicles, endosomes of varying size, multivesicular bodies, and lysosomes. The endosomes, multivesicular bodies and lysosomes contained the electron-dense patches. These results suggest that principal cells of the epididymis in the dog as possess a highly developed endocytic apparatus play a role in endocytosis. These cells function are similarly to the related in other...

Ultrastructural Study of the Neuromuscular Junctions of Extensor Digitorum Longus Muscle (M. extensor digitorum longus) of the Mice International Journal of Morphology
Boaro,Sueli N; Fragoso Neto,Raul A.
The neuromuscular junction of the extensor digitorum longus muscle of fingers was analyzed in 21 young (three months) and old (from six to 25 months) mice, from both genders. Morphologic changes were found throughout the mouse life, being more frequent and visible with aging. According with the data described in the literature consulted and the observations taken in this research, it becomes clear that a continuous process of morphological remodeling occurs in all neuromuscular ultrastructural junctions of the extensor digitorum longus muscle of fingers, during the life of the animal. Theses changes are characterized by figures of myelin in the cytoplasm of Schwann cells, pleomorphic and multivesiclar bodies, mitochondrias with morphologically altered...

Ultrastructural Characterization of the Pars Distalis of the Indian Female Sheath-Tailed Bat, Taphozous longimanus (Hardwicke) International Journal of Morphology
Nerkar,Archana A; Gadegone,Mohan M.
The present ultrastructural observations demonstrate the presence of six cell types in the pars distalis of non-pregnant and pregnant bats of Taphozous longimanus. In the pars distalis of T. longimanus, STH cells are round to oval with eccentrically placed nucleus, numerous secretory granules and well developed Golgi indicate a cell under vigorous synthetic activity while those filled with secretory granules with reduced Golgi complex suggest reserve or storage state of cells. LTH cell is characterized by the large secretory granules, dilated endoplasmic reticulum and numerous mitochondria in the cytoplasm which indicate that these cells are hypertrophied and synthetically very active during pregnancy. ACTH cells are found either singly or in groups and...

IN VITRO ACTION OF COBRA VENOM ON GOAT SPERMATOZOA ULTRASTRUCTURE BY TRANSMISSION AND SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
RAHMY,T. R.; AYOUB,M. A..
Goat spermatozoa were incubated in vitro in Tris-citrate buffer, pH 7.2, containing 0, 40, 80, or 160 mug of Naja haje venom/mL buffer for 4 hours. During incubation, the percentages of sperm motility were decreased, while percentages of dead spermatozoa were increased in a time and concentration-dependent manner. The effect of venom concentrations on the ultrastructure of incubated spermatozoa was examined hourly by scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy. SEM results showed plasma membrane wrinkling at heads of some spermatozoa after 2 h incubation with 40mug venom. Most spermatozoa suffered membrane wrinkling after 4 h incubation. However, incubation with 80 mug venom caused membrane fractures in most sperm heads after 1 h incubation....

The venom gland of the scorpion species Euscorpius mingrelicus (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae): morphological and ultrastructural characterization J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Yigit,N; Benli,M.
The histology and ultrastructure of venom glands in the scorpion Euscorpius mingrelicus (Kessler, 1874) are described and illustrated in the current study for the first time by employing light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The venom apparatus is composed of a pair of venom glands and a stinger, both situated in the last segment of the metasoma. The venom glands are completely separate but similar. The two glands are segregated within the telson by striated muscle bundles, and their outer surfaces are surrounded by a cuticle. An internal layer constitutes the secretory epithelium. This epithelium is made up of simple columnar cells. The nucleus and organelles involved in cellular synthetic activity are situated basally. In the...

Ultrastructure of the cuticle of the chalimus larva of the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer, 1837) (Copepoda: Caligidae) Naturalis
Bron, J.E.; Shinn, A.P.; Sommerville, C..
The cuticle of the chalimus II stage of Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepoda: Caligidae) comprised a four-layered epicuticle with a pronounced fuzzy coat which was separated from the outer and inner procuticles by a layer of transitional procuticle. The cuticle is underlain by a single-layered epidermis which overlies integumental glands and chromatophores. The structure of this cuticle is very similar to that described for free-living copepods and does not display the modifications associated with more highly transformed parasitic species.

Moulting in the chalimus larva of the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepoda, Caligidae) Naturalis
Bron, J.E.; Shinn, A.P.; Sommerville, C..
The ultrastructure of moulting in the chalimus phase of the parasitic caligid copepod Lepeophtheirus salmonis is described for the first time. The major features of the moult sequence correspond to those of other Crustacea, save for the absence of a distinguishable intermoult as defined by reduced epidermal activity and a cessation of cuticle production. This latter may be explained cither in terms of a continuous moulting process related to the constant food supply available to a parasite or in terms of a highly abbreviated intermoult period. The findings are discussed with respect to studies of other Crustacean species.

Systematic value of the ultrastructure of the sucker surface in the squid family Mastigoteuthidae (Mollusca: Cephalopoda) Naturalis
Salcedo-Vargas, Mario Alejandro.
The ultrastructure of the sucker surface is described and its systematic value for mastigoteuthid squids, which bear minute suckers, is considered. An introduction to sucker terms is given and a redefinition of these terms is attempted. Using scanning electron microscopic data, two genera and four subgenera of Mastigoteuthidae from the Northwest Pacific are distinguished. The presence of “cushions” in the sucker is discussed and considered as a character important for understanding adaptations of cephalopods to the deep-sea.

Development, comparative morphology and cornification of reptilian claws in relation to claws evolution in tetrapods Naturalis
Alibardi, L..
The development of claws in different reptiles and their cornification are analyzed using histological, ultrastructural and autoradiographic methods. Claws develop at the tip of digits in relation to the growth of the terminal phalanx and appear as modified scales. The apical epidermis of digit becomes thickened and is associated with a mesenchymal condensation or a dense mesenchyme. The dorsal side of the digit becomes the unguis while the ventral side becomes the sub-unguis. The corneous layer in the unguis is thicker than in the sub-unguis and accumulates hard-keratin while corneocytes remain separated or partially fused. Bundles of hard-keratin tend to accumulate in parallel orientation with respect to the surface and are directed toward the claw tip....

Morphological reassessment and molecular phylogenetic analyses of Amauroderma s.lat. raised new perspectives in the generic classification of the Ganodermataceae family Naturalis
Costa-Rezende, D.H.; Robledo, G.L.; Góes-Neto, A.; Reck, M.A.; Crespo, E.; Drechsler-Santos, E.R..
Ganodermataceae is a remarkable group of polypore fungi, mainly characterized by particular doublewalled basidiospores with a coloured endosporium ornamented with columns or crests, and a hyaline smooth exosporium. In order to establish an integrative morphological and molecular phylogenetic approach to clarify relationship of Neotropical Amauroderma s.lat. within the Ganodermataceae family, morphological analyses, including scanning electron microscopy, as well as a molecular phylogenetic approach based on one (ITS) and four loci (ITS-5.8S, LSU, TEF-1α and RPB1), were carried out. Ultrastructural analyses raised up a new character for Ganodermataceae systematics, i.e., the presence of perforation in the exosporium with holes that are connected with hollow...

Phylogeny of the Anomura (Decapoda, Crustacea): Spermatozoa and spermatophore morphological evidence Naturalis
Tudge, Christopher C..
A phylogenetic analysis of selected anomuran, thalassinidean, and other decapod crustacean taxa, based on spermatozoal ultrastructural characters and spermatophore morphological characters, was performed and the following relationships of the taxa are elucidated from the trees produced. The Anomura are not a monophyletic assemblage, with the lomoid Lomis being exclusive of the remainder of the anomuran taxa, and the thalassinid Thalassina included in the anomuran clade. The synapomorphy joining the majority of the conventional anomuran taxa ( Lomis excluded) is the cytoplasmic origin of the microtubular arms. When the palinurid and thalassinoid representatives are separately designated as outgroups, the Astacidea and Brachyura jointly formed a sister group...

Morphology and distribution of antennal sensilla of Gryon gallardoi (Brèthes) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) females Neotropical Entomology
Rocha,Luciane da; Moreira,Gilson R.P.; Redaelli,Luiza R..
With the aid of scanning electron microscopy, the external morphology and distribution of the antennal sensilla were described for females of Gryon gallardoi (Bréthes), an egg-parasitoid of coreids. The geniculated and clavated antennae are composed of 12 antennomeres. Along the flagelum we registered dorsal glands and seven types of sensilla: papillary, chaetica of two sizes - long and short types, styloconic grooved-peg, sickle-shaped and trichodea with numerical and spatial variation among the flagellomeres. Functional aspects of the sensilla are discussed in the context of G. gallardoi antennal drumming behavior. Thus, the determination and the description pattern of antennal sensilla in G. gallardoi, in the present study, is an advance regarding the...
