Lolium Multiflorum seeds in the soil: II. Longevity under natural conditions Rev. bras. sementes
Maia,Fernanda Costa; Maia,Manoel De Souza; Bekker,Renée M.; Berton,Rogério Previatti; Caetano,Leandro Sebastião.
The interest was the seed longevity dynamics of annual ryegrass in natural conditions as an important tool to explain its dynamics in no tillage systems used in the South of Brazil. The species is commonly managed for natural re-sowing and, in this way, allows cattle grazing with reduced costs during the winter time. In February of 2003, twenty bags of nylon screen containing sterilised soil with 100 seeds in each were randomly buried in the field, 5 cm deep. Around every three or four months, four sacks were exhumed. Seeds were counted and tested using germination and tetrazolium tests. The seeds showed high primary dormancy, which was overcome very fast. After 108, 226, 326, 565 and 732 days of burial there were no significant differences as the secondary...

Seed quality parameters of three interspecific hybrids of elephant grass x pearl millet Rev. bras. sementes
Pozitano,Marina; Usberti,Roberto.
An interspecific hybrid resulting from the crossing of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach) x pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Brown) has been developed. This hybrid, however, revealed low phenotypic uniformity and low production of pure seeds. Through recurrent selection, two improved populations were obtained (genotypes Corte and Pastoreio). The aim of this study was assessing seed quality of the three hybrids (genotypes Corte, Pastoreio and Paraiso) by tests of: seed purity; seed germination; accelerated aging test, at 42 ºC; 1,000 seeds weight; drying curves; and sorption and desorption isotherms. Recurrent selection altered the seed size and increased initial quality of population for genotype Pastoreio. Drying curves for the three...

Sowing seeds for the future: the need for establishing protocols for the study of seed dormancy Acta Botanica
Silveira,Fernando Augusto Oliveira.
Seed dormancy is a widely misunderstood plant trait. In several research areas, a lack of germination is wrongly assumed to result from seed dormancy. In an attempt to standardize seed dormancy research and improve communication among seed scientists, a straightforward protocol to address the occurrence and causes of seed dormancy is provided. Standardizing communication is not just a theoretical exercise but also has practical implications in agriculture and conservation. Standardization will make studies comparable and hence we will have a deeper understanding of the physiology, ecology and evolution of seed dormancy. A better understanding of the various aspects of seed dormancy will lead to greater appreciation of the biogeographical and phylogenetic...
