The interest was the seed longevity dynamics of annual ryegrass in natural conditions as an important tool to explain its dynamics in no tillage systems used in the South of Brazil. The species is commonly managed for natural re-sowing and, in this way, allows cattle grazing with reduced costs during the winter time. In February of 2003, twenty bags of nylon screen containing sterilised soil with 100 seeds in each were randomly buried in the field, 5 cm deep. Around every three or four months, four sacks were exhumed. Seeds were counted and tested using germination and tetrazolium tests. The seeds showed high primary dormancy, which was overcome very fast. After 108, 226, 326, 565 and 732 days of burial there were no significant differences as the secondary... |

An interspecific hybrid resulting from the crossing of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach) x pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Brown) has been developed. This hybrid, however, revealed low phenotypic uniformity and low production of pure seeds. Through recurrent selection, two improved populations were obtained (genotypes Corte and Pastoreio). The aim of this study was assessing seed quality of the three hybrids (genotypes Corte, Pastoreio and Paraiso) by tests of: seed purity; seed germination; accelerated aging test, at 42 ºC; 1,000 seeds weight; drying curves; and sorption and desorption isotherms. Recurrent selection altered the seed size and increased initial quality of population for genotype Pastoreio. Drying curves for the three... |

Gliricidia sepium is a drought-tolerant species, easily multiplied by seeds, and has been exploited by farmers as a source of forage in the semi-arid region of northeast Brazil. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of seed storage on the mobilization of reserves during imbibition of "Gliricidia" seeds. Freshly-harvested seeds were packed in kraft paper bags and stored for three and six months in the laboratory under ambient conditions (25 º C ± 3 T and 75% ± 3 RH). Cotyledons were isolated from imbibed seeds and macerated for the extraction and quantification of total soluble sugars, reducing sugars, sucrose and starch, as well as of proteins, amino acids and for amylase activity. Storage under these conditions resulted in an... |

ABSTRACT Dairy products are the primary delivery for probiotics, with great popularity among the public looking for functional foods. The addition of probiotics to new food matrices requires studies about the stability and viability of these microorganisms in the final product. This study aimed to develop a probiotic smoothie beverage and to evaluate the microbiological quality, pH, acidity, syneresis, probiotics viability, sensory acceptance, and consumers’ preference. For that, thirty-six beverage formulations were prepared using yogurt and different fruit pulps. Six formulations were selected for the study, as follows: probiotic yogurt with the addition of mango pulp, grape, red fruits (containing 8 and 10% sucrose), mango/passion fruit, and red... |

ABSTRACT The tetrazolium test is one of the promising alternatives to determine the viability of dormant, recalcitrant and slow-germinating seeds. The objective of this study was to adapt the tetrazolium test methodology to estimate the viability and vigor of Piptadenia stipulacea (Benth.) Ducke seeds. For this, a sample of seeds was classified into three sublots using round sieves, corresponding to six, five and four millimeters in diameter, respectively. Moisture content, imbibition curve, germination, emergence, germination and emergence speed indices, mean germination time and seedling emergence were initially evaluated. The second stage was conducted using a completely randomized experimental design, in 3 x 9 factorial scheme, corresponding to three... |

ABSTRACT The tetrazolium test is a quick and effective method for evaluating viability in seeds. The aim of this study was to determine a methodology for using the tetrazolium test, and its efficiency in verifying viability in seeds of the gherkin (Cucumis anguria L.). Consequently, five batches of gherkin seed were initially evaluated by the tests for germination, first count and speed of germination. The batches were then subjected to treatments in order to adjust the methodology for the tetrazolium test, evaluating three concentrations of tetrazolium solution (0.100, 0.075 and 0.050%), kept in the dark for two, four and six hours, under temperatures of 35 °C and 40 °C, with four replications of 25 seeds per treatment. At the end of the staining period,... |

Epilachna paenulata (Germar, 1824) was reared feeding on pumpkin leaves (Cucurbita pepo Lourt.) in laboratory conditions at temperatures of 20±0,5ºC, relative humidity of 65±0,5% and 12 hour photoperiod. Groups of fecunded and non-fecunded females were studied. The ovarioles showed four developing stages during egg production, morphologically alike for fecunded and non-fecunded females, but differing in the duration time of the stages. Each ovarium has 24 ovarioles on average, less than any other species known into the genus, and all ovarioles are physiologically active at each oviposition. The mean number of ovarioles is lower when compared with the other species of Epilachninae known. Fecunded and non-fecunded females showed a similar preoviposition... |

Torch ginger Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M. Smith is a tropical herb-like, rhizome-like and perennial plant that possesses inflorescences that are both pretty and showy at different colour shades, and have a great visual appeal. Producing seedlings at a high enough level when done conventionally by the division of tussocks, has high costs and phytosanitary problems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the induction of somatic embryogenesis and its potential for subsequent plant regeneration in torch ginger. Rhizomes, leaves and roots from the seedlings grown in vitro were used as explant segments. The different explants were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 30 g L-1 sucrose, and it was solidified with 5.5 g L-1 of agar. The effect of 2.4-D... |
