A taxonomic revision of Actinidiaceae of Vietnam Naturalis
Cuong, N.M.; Soejarto, D.D.; Li, J..
Taxonomic study of morphological variability using multivariate analysis, together with field studies and literature review clarified the status of a number of paired species of Saurauia and Actinidia of Vietnam and resolved their correct nomenclature: Saurauia tristyla is different from S. roxburghii; Saurauia petelotii is not a synonym of S. fasciculata but is a separate species; Actinidia tonkinensis is a synonym of A. latifolia; Actinidia indochinensis is a distinct species, not a variety of A. callosa; Saurauia dillenioides is a synonym of S. armata; and Saurauia griffithii var. annamica is a synonym of S. napaulensis. Four taxa of Actinidia are newly recorded for Vietnam. The results of this study will allow us to better understand the conservation...

The choice of external morphological characters and developmental stages for tadpole-based anuran taxonomy: a case study in Rana (Sylvirana) nigrovittata (Blyth, 1855) (Amphibia, Anura, Ranidae) Naturalis
Grosjean, S..
The morphology of tadpoles has long received too little attention in taxonomic and phylogenetic contexts, beyond the use of Orton’s general tadpole types, despite the potential of larval characters for resolving problems in systematics. A possible explanation for this neglect is the ontogenetic variation of external morphology. In order to understand the value of larval characters in taxonomy and systematics, it is necessary to determine the developmental stage at which characters reach their definitive size, form and colour before meaningful comparisons can be made within and between species. Here I use the tadpole of Rana (Sylvirana) nigrovittata as a model organism to assess ontogenetic character variation. Morphometric measurements were taken, and...

Theileria orientalis is a benign bovine protozoan parasite that occasionally causes serious economic loss in the livestock industry. We report the findings of a molecular epidemiological survey of T. orientalis in 94 Vietnamese yellow cattle, 43 water buffaloes, 21 sheep, 21 goats and 85 blood-sucking ticks of cattle in the Thua Thien Hue province of Vietnam. The major piroplasm surface protein (MPSP) gene of T. orientalis was detected using polymerase chain reaction from 13 cattle (13.8%), 11 water buffaloes (25.6%), 1 sheep (4.8%) and 9 ticks (10.6%). Phylogenetic analysis using MPSP gene sequences showed the presence of seven genotypes, four previously categorized genotypes (Types 1, 3, 5 and 7) and three new genotypes (Types N-1, N-2 and N-3).

Improving animal health and incentive of hygiene management: Case study in Vietnam OAK
Kono, H; 耕野, 拓一.
Incidence of animal diseases, such as Hog Cholera and Pasteurella, was found in our field survey of 100 pig farmers in T.T.Hue province in Vietnam Thirty five (36%) of surveyed farmers are in poverty according to the 2005 poverty standard in Vietnam. Low income farmer has a large income share from pig production. We suggest that the increase of pig deaths in low income farms will raise the risk to fall into poverty. Improvement of animal health service, especially for low income farmers, will be important for poverty reduction in rural area in Vietnam. Vietnamese pork distribution is in a state of so-called information asymmetry. In order to solve the problem of information asymmetry, it is necessary to fulfill the requirements of incentive compatibility....

Hemoprotozoan infections often cause serious production losses in livestock. In the present study, we conducted a PCR-based survey of Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, Theileria annulata, Theileria orientalis, Trypanosoma evansi and Trypanosoma theileri, using 423 DNA samples extracted from blood samples of cattle (n=202), water buffaloes (n=43), sheep (n=51) and goats (n=127) bred in the Hue and Hanoi provinces of Vietnam. With the exception of T. annulata and T. evansi, all other parasite species (B. bovis, B. bigemina, T. orientalis and T. theileri) were detected in the cattle populations with B. bovis being the most common among them. Additionally, four water buffaloes and a single goat were infected with B. bovis and B. bigemina, respectively. The Hue...

Epidemiology of bovine hemoprotozoa parasites in cattle and water buffalo in Vietnam OAK
WEERASOORIYA, Gayani; SIVAKUMAR, Thillaiampalam; LAN, Dinh Thi Bich; LONG, Phung Thang; TAKEMAE, Hitoshi; IGARASHI, Ikuo; INOUE, Noboru; YOKOYAMA, Naoaki.
A PCR-based survey of hemoprotozoa parasites detected Babesia bigemina, Theileria orientalis and Trypanosoma theileri among cattle and water buffalo in Vietnam, and a new Babesia sp. closely related to Babesia ovata was detected in cattle only. In addition, Theileria annulata and Trypanosoma evansi were not detected in both cattle and water buffalo. Phylogenetic analysis detected T. orientalis MPSP genotypes 3, 5, 7 and N3 in cattle and 5, 7, N1 and N2 in water buffalo. Additionally, water buffalo-derived T. theileri CATL sequences clustered together with a previously reported cattle-derived sequence from Vietnam. This is the first report of a new Babesia sp. in cattle, and T. orientalis MPSP genotype 7 and T. theileri in water buffalo in Vietnam.

Does Agriculture Help Poverty and Inequality Reduction? Evidence from Vietnam AgEcon
Viet Cuong, Nguyen.
This paper measures impacts of production of crops, forestry, livestock and aquaculture on household welfare, poverty and inequality in rural Vietnam using fixed-effects regressions. Data used in this paper are from Vietnam Household Living Standard Surveys 2002 and 2004. It is found that impact estimates of the production of crops and forestry on per capita income and consumption expenditure are not statistically significant. Impact estimates of the livestock production are positive and statistically significant for per capita income, but not statistically significant for per capita expenditure. However, the aquacultural production has positive and statistically significant impacts on both income and expenditure. As a result, the aquacultural production...

Valuation of Safety-Branded and Traceable Free Range Chicken in Ha Noi: Results from a Field Experiment AgEcon
Ifft, Jennifer; Roland-Holst, David W.; Zilberman, David.
The valuation of traceable or safety-branded food by consumers in developing countries affected by diseases such as avian influenza, or with food safety issues in general, is very difficult to identify. Products that have safety-branding are not common, and food is usually purchased by bargaining at informal markets. However, valuation of traceability has important implications for livestock disease policies as well as agricultural sector development. Through developing a short-term certified supply chain for free range chicken in Hanoi, we were able to conduct a combined field experiment and detailed household survey to measure the valuation of this type of poultry. We find that consumers in urban Hanoi on average have a welfare gain of about $1 per whole...
