Almeida,Willian F. de; Paz,Vital P. da S.; Jesus,Ana P. C. de; Silva,Jucicléia S. da; Gonçalves,Karoline S.; Oliveira,Andressa S. de.
ABSTRACT In view of the imminent need for efficient water use and the search for adequate management techniques to reduce the effect of salinity on plants, a study was conducted to evaluate the effect of continuous and pulses drip irrigation with saline water on green bean yield and water use efficiency. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in a completely randomized design, with treatments distributed in a 2 x 5 factorial arrangement. The first factor was type of drip irrigation, i.e., continuous or pulse, while the second factor was the levels of water salinity (electrical conductivity of 0.3, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 dS m-1), with five replicates, and two plants per replicate, totaling 50 experimental units. The following variables were analysed:...

Coelho,Eugênio Ferreira; Santos,Marcelo Rocha dos; Donato,Sérgio Luíz Rodrigues; Cruz,Jailson Lopes; Oliveira,Polyanna Mara de; Castricini,Ariane.
ABSTRACT: Climatic uncertainties have compromised water resources, which influences irrigated agriculture. Irrigation is an important alternative to mitigate the effects of water scarcity. Partial root-zone drying (PRD) is a rational use of irrigation water. This study aimed to evaluate PRD for irrigation management of banana crop, cv BRS Princesa, under semi-arid conditions in Brazil. A field experiment was carried out with five treatments: one control (full irrigation) and four with 50 % reduction of water irrigation depth (WID) and frequencies alternating the side to be irrigated of the plant row of 0, 7, 14 and 21 days. Stomatal conductance, growth, yield and soil water status were evaluated. Results indicated that banana crop cv. BRS Princesa shows...

Automatically controlled deficit irrigation of lettuce in “organic potponics” Scientia Agricola
Valença,David da Cunha; Carvalho,Daniel Fonseca de; Reinert,Fernanda; Azevedo,Ricardo Antunes; Pinho,Camila Ferreira de; Medici,Leonardo Oliveira.
ABSTRACT: Concerns with water crisis involve all sectors of society and irrigated agriculture remains the main water consumer. This study evaluated an agricultural production system for lettuce cultivation in greenhouse, “organic potponics”, to economize water and manure use, using a Simplified Irrigation Controller (SIC), based on soil matric potential monitoring. Five irrigation volumes were evaluated in pots with 4.8 L, fertilized with 200 g of vermicompost. One of the volumes was controlled with the SIC. The other volumes represented 130, 80, 60 and 33 % of that controlled by the SIC and all treatments received water at the same time. Shoot fresh weight, head diameter and stomatal conductance (gs) increased linearly with irrigation volumes. For shoot...

Water use and grain yield response of rainfed soybean to tillage-mulch practices in southeastern Nigeria Scientia Agricola
Obalum,Sunday Ewele; Igwe,Charles Arizechukwu; Obi,Martin Eze; Wakatsuki,Toshiyuki.
Despite the agronomic, economic and food values of soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill), there is still dearth of information on the tillage need and the implications of surface mulch for the crop in the eastern part of the forest-savanna transition zone of Nigeria. This study was therefore carried out on a sandy loam Ultisol at Nsukka with a sub-humid climate, during 2006 and 2007 cropping seasons. Our objective was to devise an appropriate tillage method for the crop from evaluated effects of no-till (NT), conventional tillage (CT) and mulch on selected key agronomic indices. Each of the NT and the CT was either unmulched (U) or mulched (M) in a split-plot, giving four treatments/tillage methods (NTU, NTM, CTU and CTM) randomized in four blocks. Rainfall was...

Co2 and irrigation in relation to yield and water use of the bell pepper crop Scientia Agricola
Rezende,Fátima Conceição; Frizzone,José Antonio; Oliveira,Ricardo Ferraz de; Pereira,Anderson Soares.
Greenhouse production of vegetables is widely used throughout the world. Elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in these closed environments can increase net photosynthesis and yield. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of atmospheric CO2 enrichment and water supply on the growth of potted bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants, cultivated under controlled environmental conditions. CO2 was applied daily, and its distribution was monitored above plant rows through micro pipes located at 3.0 m height. A drip irrigation system with one dripper per plant was used to irrigate the plants. Different volumes of irrigation water, representing fractions of the water volume (Vet) consumed by pot plants growing under no water stress...

Saffron yield and quality as influenced by different irrigation methods Scientia Agricola
Mollafilabi,Abdullah; Davari,Kamran; Dehaghi,Majid Amini.
ABSTRACT Dried stigma of saffron is the most expensive spice in the world. In Iran, the majority of saffron farms use the traditional basin method for irrigation, which, together with other irrigation methods may soon face serious problems because of droughts in the future. Making an evaluation of the regional crop response to the irrigation method is important to the adoption of a proper irrigation management strategy. In this study, the effect of employing different irrigation methods, including the sprinkler, drip, furrow, and basin, on the following factors was evaluated: the saffron stigma dry weight, quality, water use efficiency (WUE), and Irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) in the arid climate of Qaen, South Khorasan, Iran, over three...

Optimization of banana plantlets acclimatization by hydroponic cultivation Scientia Agricola
Toyosumi,Iumi da Silva; Silva,Tibério Santos Martins da; Melo,Diego Magalhães; Azevedo Neto,André Dias de; Soares,Tales Miler; Coelho Filho,Maurício Antonio.
ABSTRACT: Acclimatization is the final phase of banana plantlet production by micropropagation. In this phase, the plantlets are grown in a protected environment with high demand for water, fertilizer and labor, until reaching the standard size and quality required for marketing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of reducing these costs and the duration of the acclimatization phase, using the hydroponic cultivation technique as compared to the conventional system. ‘Prata–Anã’ banana plantlet performance was measured for both systems under both tropical summer and winter conditions, based upon water and nutrient use efficiency and growing time of the plantlets. In both seasons, the plantlets produced hydroponically presented faster...

Water-yield relationships of potato under different irrigation methods and regimens Scientia Agricola
Erdem,Tolga; Erdem,Yesim; Orta,Halim; Okursoy,Hakan.
Yield response to irrigation of different crops is of major importance in production planning where water resources are limited. This study aims to determine the effect of different irrigation methods and irrigation regimens on potato yield in the Trakya Region, Turkey, during 2003 and 2005. Potato was grown under furrow and drip irrigation methods and three regimens: irrigation applied when 30, 50, or 70% of the available water was consumed. The seasonal potato evapotranspiration ranged on 501 to 683 mm in 2003, and 464 to 647 mm in 2005. The furrow and drip irrigation methods had no significant effect on tuber yield for both years. Irrigation regimens influenced tuber yield (P < 0.05) in 2005, and the highest tuber yield was registered for 30%...

Automation of lettuce seedlings irrigation with sensors deployed in the substrate or at the atmosphere Scientia Agricola
Bezerra,Ana Carolina Mendes; Valença,David da Cunha; Carvalho,Daniel Fonseca de; Pinho,Camila Ferreira de; Reinert,Fernanda; Gomes,Daniela Pinto; Gabetto,Fernanda Palmeira; Azevedo,Ricardo Antunes; Masseroni,Daniele; Medici,Leonardo Oliveira.
ABSTRACT: Seedling production is an important step in the lettuce production system. However, there is a tendency to apply excessive irrigation at this stage. The aim of this study was to test the use of the Simplified Irrigation Controller (SIC) under two conditions: first, with the sensor installed in the substrate (measuring the soil water tension) and second, in the atmosphere (“atmospheric” - responding to vapor demand in the atmosphere) to control the irrigation of lettuce seedlings. The performance of the SIC was evaluated by monitoring plant traits. The lettuce seeds of the Regina cultivar were sown in styrofoam trays with commercial organic substrate. Both experiments were conducted under greenhouse conditions and evaluated under different SIC...

Increased atmospheric CO2 changes the photosynthetic responses of Acrocomia aculeata (Arecaceae) to drought Acta Botanica
Rosa,Bruno Luan; Souza,João Paulo; Pereira,Eduardo Gusmão.
ABSTRACT Water availability is the main factor that explains current patterns of palm abundance. However, the interaction between water stress and increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations caused by climatic change and its effects on palm physiology remain poorly known. Macauba palm is a widespread Neotropical species commonly found in ecosystems subjected to seasonal drought and has potential use in oil production. The present work investigated the influence of increased CO2 concentrations on photosynthetic responses to drought in macauba palm plants. Exposure to increased CO2 concentrations led to up-regulation of photosynthesis through higher stomatal conductance and improved light and water use efficiency. Macauba palm plants under water stress,...

Salinity reduces carbon assimilation and the harvest index of cassava plants (Manihot esculenta Crantz) Agronomy
Cruz, Jailson Lopes; Coelho Filho, Mauricio Antonio; Coelho, Eugenio Ferreira; Santos, Andrade Alves dos.
This study was developed to evaluate the effects of salinity on the growth and gas exchange of cassava plants, cultivar Verdinha. The four concentrations of NaCl (mM) were as follows: 0, 20, 40, and 60. Under salinity, the lowest concentration of Na+ ions was observed in the tuberous roots; however, the dry matter of tuberous roots was reduced with an application of just 20 mM NaCl. The harvest index was reduced 50% with the highest salt concentration. Salinity reduced carbon assimilation (A), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration, and the instantaneous water use efficiency. The correlation between gs and A was high and positive, showing that stomatal movement was one of the responsible for the lower A. Under salt stress, there was an increase in...

Many coffee growers apply glyphosate in directed applications, but some phytotoxicity has been noted. It is believed some herbicides can exert a direct or indirect negative effect on photosynthesis by reducing the metabolic rate in a way that can affect the water use efficiency. The objective of this study was to investigate the variables related to water use among coffee cultivars subjected to the application of glyphosate and the effects of each dose. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using three varieties of coffee (Coffea arabica), Acaiá (MG-6851), Catucaí Amarelo (2SL) and Topázio (MG-1190), and three doses of glyphosate (0.0, 115.2 and 460.8 g acid equivalent ha-1), in a factorial 3 x 3 design.
