Can land use changes alter carbon, nitrogen and major ion transport in subtropical brazilian streams? Scientia Agricola
Silva,Daniela Mariano Lopes da; Ometto,Jean Pierre Henry Balbaud; Lobo,Gré de Araújo; Lima,Walter de Paula; Scaranello,Marcos Augusto; Mazzi,Edmar; Rocha,Humberto Ribeiro da.
Several studies in tropical watersheds have evaluated the impact of urbanization and agricultural practices on water quality. In Brazil, savannas (known regionally as Cerrados) represent 23% of the country's surface, representing an important share to the national primary growth product, especially due to intense agriculture. The purpose of this study is to present a comprehensive evaluation, on a yearly basis, of carbon, nitrogen and major ion fluxes in streams crossing areas under different land use (natural vegetation, sugar cane and eucalyptus) in a savanna region of SE Brazil. Eucalyptus and sugar cane alter the transport of the investigated elements in small watersheds. The highest concentration of all parameters (abiotic parameters, ions, dissolved...

Consequences of suppressing natural vegetation in drainage areas for freshwater ecosystem conservation: considerations on the new "Brazilian forest code" Acta Botanica
Pinheiro,Marcelo Henrique Ongaro; Carvalho,Lucélia Nobre; Arruda,Rafael; Guilherme,Frederico Augusto Guimarães.
The input of particulate and dissolved organic matter (POM and DOM, respectively) from terrestrial ecosystem drainage basins is an important energy and nutrient source in limnic food chains. Studies indicated that semi-deciduous seasonal forests located in drainage areas in Brazil have the potential to produce 7.5 - 10.3 Mg ha−1/year of POM. The global increase in vegetation destruction, such as forests, threatens this allochthonous resource and can have significant impacts on river and lake communities and food chains. Therefore, it is critical that exploitation and occupation protocols are updated to protect the transition areas between terrestrial and limnic ecosystems. This review highlights the existing knowledge of these ecosystem interactions and...

Composition and structure of the gallery forest in the Taquaruçu GrandeSub-basin, Municipality of Palmas, Tocantins State Biological Sciences
Silva, Wagner Matos da; Lolis, Solange de Fátima; Viana, Rodney Haulien Oliveira.
In the State of Tocantins, there is an abundance of water bodies, and consequently a large range of gallery forests. Despite growing awareness of the importance of these forest resources and the need to conserve them, little is known about the composition and floristic diversity of existing remnants, which still represent part of the original vegetation. The aim of this study was to review and compare the floristic composition and structure of the tree layer of the gallery forest in two microbasins of Taquaruçu Grande Sub-basin, Palmas County, Tocantins State. For phytosociological sampling, contiguous 50 plots of 10 x 10 m were set in each area, where all the individuals with trunk circumference greater than or equal to 15, at 130 cm from the ground were...

Peak discharge estimation to evaluate and monitor the Gumbasa Watershed performance, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia CIGR Journal
Naharuddin, Naharuddin Naharuddin; Sadeghi, Seyed Mohammad Moein; Malik, Adam; Rosyid, Abdul; Ahyauddin, Ahyauddin.
One of the appropriate strategies to evaluate watershed health is by determining peak discharge. This is associated with the influence of frequent floods and landslides on the changes in the carrying capacity of Gumbasa watershed. It was also attached to the accelerated forest and land degradation due to encroachment, especially in the upstream. This study aims to determine the estimated peak discharge of three sub-watersheds, including Lindu, Palolo, and Gumbasa to monitor and evaluate the performance of the main watershed. This was conducted using a rational method with a combined and average flow coefficient approach, while the rainfall intensity was calculated based on the longest concentration time. The results showed the flow coefficient in the...

Simulated effect of wetting/drying periods for two textural soils amended with biochar at a catchment scale CIGR Journal
Villagra-Mendoza, Karolina; Carvajal-Vanegas, Dorian; Beck-Broichsitter, Steffen; Horn, Rainer.
Biochar is considered as an option to ameliorate soil functions, by improving soil physical and hydraulic soil properties. This study investigated the effect of biochar and of wetting and drying cycles on the water infiltration at laboratory and at a hypothetical watershed scenario. In the laboratory, test samples with 2.5 and 5% (by dry mass) of a mango-wood biochar were added to a sandy and sandy loam soil material. Cumulative infiltration was determined after simulated intense wetting and drying cycles, by drying the samples at 30°C for three consecutive days. Additionally, biochar amended soil hydraulic parameters, obtained at the laboratory, were used to simulate the water discharge of a hypothetical watershed, with the Soil and Water Assessment Tool...

Antifungal susceptibility of yeasts isolated from anthropogenic watershed Anais da ABC (AABC)
MILANEZI,ANA C.M.; WITUSK,JOÃO P.D.; VAN DER SAND,SUELI T..
Abstract Yeasts are unicellular fungi widespread in the environment, and studies suggest that there is a positive correlation between yeast and polluted aquatic environments. The aim of this study was to analyze the diversity and resistance of yeasts isolated from water samples collected along the Arroio Dilúvio in Porto Alegre to antifungals. Yeast isolates from the Arroio Dilúvio were subjected to susceptibility assays against antifungals using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test, and amplification of the ITS1-5.8S-IT2 region; in addition, the ITS-5.8S region was sequenced for some of the isolates. The amplification product was subjected to PCR-RFLP, and the restriction profile allowed the construction of a dendrogram. Susceptibility tests...

SILVA JÚNIOR,RENATO O. DA; SOUZA,EVERALDO B. DE; TAVARES,ALEXANDRA L.; MOTA,JOSÉ A.; FERREIRA,DOUGLAS B.S.; SOUZA-FILHO,PEDRO W.M.; ROCHA,EDSON J.P. DA.
ABSTRACT This study estimated the reference evapotranspiration rate (ETo) for the Itacaiúnas River Watershed (IRW), Eastern Amazonia, and measured the accuracy of eight empirical equations: Penman-Monteith (PM), Priestley-Taylor (PT), Hargreaves and Samani (HS), Camargo (CAM), Thornthwaite (TH), Hamon (HM), Kharrufa (KF) and Turc (TC) using monthly data from 1980 to 2013. In addition, it verifies the regional applicability to the IRW using a for the Marabá-PA station. The methods TC and PM (FAO56) presented the best results, which demonstrate that radiation and higher temperatures are the dominant drivers in the Evapotranspiration process, while relative humidity and wind speed have a much smaller impact. The temporal and spatial variability of ETo for IRW...

Abstract In this article, by using carbon stable isotopes, we assessed the past and present land use influences that riparian areas are subject within agricultural landscapes. Emphasis is given to the understanding of the effects of the 2012 Brazilian Forest Act on such areas. We selected five riparian areas within a highly C4 dominated agricultural landscape. Three of them had 30 meters native riparian forest buffer (NRFB) and two of them had 8 meter and no NRFB. We used three 100 meter-transects located 5, 15 and 30 meters relative to stream channel to obtain soil samples (0 - 10 cm). All riparian areas presented soil carbon isotopic signatures that are not C3 (native forests) irrespective of having or not 30 meters NRFB. Two cases presenting less than...

Estimation of soil erosionability in the stream basin of Pillahuinco Grande, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Gaspari,Fernanda J; Rodríguez Vagaría,Alfonso M; Senisterra,Gabriela E.
In a hydrographic watershed, the erosionability (K factor) of the soil evaluation depends on the technical resources, developed applied sciences, and spatial technology available. For the determination of erosionability in the watershed of Pillahuinco Grande s Creek (Argentina) (38°S, 61°15'W), the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was used by applying a geographic information system (GIS) for the cartographic evaluation. A database of geological, environmental, and soil associations was developed, which indicated that geomorphologic variability, caused by geology and soil, significantly determines the spatial variation of the K factor values, in a range from 0.02 to 0.69 ((t·m²·h)·(ha·J·cm)-1). A new quantification was determined with the simplified K...
