Azospirillum lipoferum and nitrogen fertilization effect on chlorophyll content, nutrients uptake and biometric properties of Zea mays L. Agrociencia
Davaran-Hagh,Elnaz; Mirshekari,Bahram; Reza-Ardakani,Mohammad; Farahvash,Farhad; Rejali,Farhad.
Integrated nutrient management is a major agronomic practice which brings together all methods to support plants nutritional requirement. However, the interaction of these methods together is very complex and needs to be studied in different climatic conditions. So, the effect of nitrogen fertilizer and Azospirillum lipoferum inoculation on maize (Zea mays L.) growth, yield and nutrients uptake was determined in this study. The hypothesis was that the bacterial inoculation decreases the need for N fertilizer application without reducing plant yield. Therefore, we carried out a factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Nitrogen at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 % concentrations of the recommended dose, i.e. 150 kg N ha-1...

Conformational analysis of Pneumococcal Surface Antigen A (PsaA) upon zinc binding by fluorescence spectroscopy Anais da ABC (AABC)
Bom,Ana Paula D. Ano; Corrêa,Izabella B.S.; Argondizzo,Ana Paula C.; Medeiros,Marco Alberto; Santos,Roger B. dos; Souza,Theo Luiz F. de; Silva Junior,José G. da.
ABSTRACT PsaA (pneumococcal surface antigen A) is a S. pneumoniae virulence factor that belongs to the metal transport system. The Manganese PsaA binding has been associated with oxidative stress resistance becoming a pivotal element in the bacteria virulence. It has been shown that Zinc inhibits the Manganese acquisition and promotes bacteria toxicity. We have performed a PsaA conformational analysis both in the presence (Zn-rPsaA) and in the absence of Zinc (free-rPsaA). We performed experiments in the presence of different Zinc concentrations to determine the metal minimum concentration which induced a conformational change. The protein in free and Zn-binding condition was also studied in pH ranging 2.6-8.0 and in temperature ranging 25oC-85oC. pH...

Associative diazotrophic bacteria in grass roots and soils from heavy metal contaminated sites Anais da ABC (AABC)
Moreira,Fátima M.S.; Lange,Anderson; Klauberg-Filho,Osmar; Siqueira,José O.; Nóbrega,Rafaela S.A.; Lima,Adriana S..
This work aimed to evaluate density of associative diazotrophic bacteria populations in soil and grass root samples from heavy metal contaminated sites, and to characterize isolates from these populations, both, phenotypically (Zinc, Cadmium and NaCl tolerance in vitro, and protein profiles) and genotypically (16S rDNA sequencing), as compared to type strains of known diazotrophic species. Densities were evaluated by using NFb, Fam and JNFb media, commonly used for enrichment cultures of diazotrophic bacteria. Bacterial densities found in soil and grass root samples from contaminated sites were similar to those reported for agricultural soils. Azospirillum spp. isolates from contaminated sites and type strains from non-contaminated sites varied...

The lizard cerebral cortex as a model to study neuronal regeneration Anais da ABC (AABC)
LOPEZ-GARCIA,CARLOS; MOLOWNY,ASUNCION; NACHER,JUAN; PONSODA,XAVIER; SANCHO-BIELSA,FRANCISCO; ALONSO-LLOSA,GREGORI.
The medial cerebral cortex of lizards, an area homologous to the hippocampal fascia dentata, shows delayed postnatal neurogenesis, i.e., cells in the medial cortex ependyma proliferate and give rise to immature neurons, which migrate to the cell layer. There, recruited neurons differentiate and give rise to zinc containing axons directed to the rest of cortical areas, thus resulting in a continuous growth of the medial cortex and its zinc-enriched axonal projection. This happens along the lizard life span, even in adult lizards, thus allowing one of their most important characteristics: neuronal regeneration. Experiments in our laboratory have shown that chemical lesion of the medial cortex (affecting up to 95% of its neurons) results in a cascade of...

Uptake and translocation of Cd and Zn in two lettuce cultivars Anais da ABC (AABC)
FONTES,RENILDES L.F.; PEREIRA,JULIANA M.N.; NEVES,JULIO C.L..
Excess of heavy metals in agricultural soils is a matter of concern since it may decrease economic yield as a result of toxicity and lower product quality as a result of metal accumulation in edible plant parts. Among plant species and among cultivars within species a natural variation in uptake, translocation and distribution of trace elements occur. The transference of Cd and Zn, from soil to two lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivars grown in greenhouse, was evaluated in separate experiments for Cd and Zn.Plant dry and fresh matter yield and plant Cd and Zn concentrations were determined. Cultivar CRV showed greater potential for yield than CMM in both experiments. Cadmium and Zn translocation from roots to shoots increased with the increase of soil Cd...

Zinc in the prevention of Fe2initiated lipid and protein oxidation Biol. Res.
ZAGO,M. PAOLA; VERSTRAETEN,SANDRA V.; OTEIZA,PATRICIA I..
In the present study we characterized the capacity of zinc to protect lipids and proteins from Fe2+-initiated oxidative damage. The effects of zinc on lipid oxidation were investigated in liposomes composed of brain phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylserine (PS) at a molar relationship of 60:40 (PC:PS, 60:40). Lipid oxidation was evaluated as the oxidation of cis-parinaric acid or as the formation of 2-thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS). Zinc protected liposomes from Fe2+ (2.5-50 muM)-supported lipid oxidation. However, zinc (50 muM) did not prevent the oxidative inactivation of glutamine synthelase and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase when rat brain superntants were oxidized in the presence of 5 muM Fe2+ and 0.5 mM H2O2 .We also...

Effectiveness of zinc in modulating perinatal effects of arsenic on the teratological effects in mice offspring Biol. Res.
Ahmad,Mohammad; Wadaa,Mohammad A. M; Farooq,Muhammad; Daghestani,Maha H; Sami,Ahmed S.
Exposure to arsenic via drinking water is considered as a worldwide problem. Studies have shown that arsenic exposure during pregnancy affects embryogenesis and offspring development in rats and mice. Zinc as a micronutrient regulates many physiological functions, including an antioxidative role under various toxic conditions. However, studies on the perinatal protective effect of zinc on offspring need further attention. The present study was designed to evaluate the potential protective role of zinc in mitigating the adverse effects in the offspring of arsenic exposure during pregnancy. The arsenic (40mg/kg body weight) and zinc (4% w/v) doses formed the only drinking fluid source for the experimental groups of dams during the perinatal period of the...

Activation of group II metabotropic glutamate receptors blocks zinc release from hippocampal mossy fibers Biol. Res.
Matias,Carlos M; Dionísio,Jose C; Saggau,Peter; Quinta-Ferreira,Maria Emilia.
BACKGROUND: The hippocampal CA3 area contains large amounts of vesicular zinc in the mossy fiber terminals which is released during synaptic activity, depending on presynaptic calcium. Another characteristic of these synapses is the presynaptic localization of high concentrations of group II metabotropic glutamate receptors, specifically activated by DCG-IV. Previous work has shown that DCG-IV affects only mossy fiber-evoked responses but not the signals from associational-commissural afferents, blocking mossy fiber synaptic transmission. Since zinc is released from mossy fibers even for single stimuli and it is generally assumed to be co-released with glutamate, the aim of the work was to investigate the effect of DCG-IV on mossy fiber zinc signals....

Divalent cations as modulators of neuronal excitability: Emphasis on copper and zinc Biol. Res.
DELGADO,RICARDO; VERGARA,CECILIA; WOLFF,DANIEL.
Based on indirect evidence, a role for synaptically released copper and zinc as modulators of neuronal activity has been proposed. To test this proposal directly, we studied the effect of copper, zinc, and other divalent cations on voltage-dependent currents in dissociated toad olfactory neurons and on their firing rate induced by small depolarizing currents. Divalent cations in the nanomolar range sped up the activation kinetics and increased the amplitude of the inward sodium current. In the micromolar range, they caused a dose dependent inhibition of the inward Na+ and Ca2+ currents (I Na and I Ca) and reduced de amplitude of the Ca2+-dependent K+ outward current (I Ca-K). On the other hand, the firing rate of olfactory neurons increased when exposed to...

Geobacillus stearothermophilus LV cadA gene mediates resistance to cadmium, lead and zinc in zntA mutants of Salmonella entérica serovar Typhimurium Biol. Res.
PÉREZ,JOSÉ M; PRADEÑAS,GONZALO A; NAVARRO,CLAUDIO A; HENRÍQUEZ,DANIEL R; PICHUANTES,SERGIO E; VÁSQUEZ,CLAUDIO C.
Salmonella entérica serovar Typhimurium cells expressing the cadA gene of Geobacillus stearothermophilus LV exhibit a hypersensitive phenotype to cadmium chloride. Deletion of the ORF STM3576 from the Salmonella genome resulted in cadmium, lead and zinc sensitivity, confirming that this ORF is a homologue of the zntA gene. The observed sensitivity was reverted upon expression of the G. stearothermophilus LV cadA gene. These results indicate that the cadA gene product is involved in Cd, Pb and Zn resistance as a classical P-type ATPase and strongly suggest that the observed hypersensitive phenotype to these metals can be related to the function of the host ·zntA gene product

Crambe affected by biological and chemical seed treatments Bragantia
Cattanêo,Alex Júnior; Stangarlin,José Renato; Bassegio,Doglas; Santos,Reginado Ferreira.
ABSTRACT Crambe has great potential for cultivation in tropical regions, but its biotic factors may be a limiting aspect for its production. Thus, we aimed in this study to assess the effect of pre‐sowing seed treatments on seedling emergence, root system, production components, and oil. The experiment was conducted during two years in Cascavel, Paraná, Brazil. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks with six treatments, including a control treatment (no treatment), biological treatments (Trichoderma asperellum and Bacillus subtilis), and chemical treatments (glutamic acid, thiamethoxam and zinc), with four replications. Emergence and growth crambe, as well as production components and oil in the first year were higher due to the contrast in...

The present work was performed using the common onion (Allium cepa L.) as a bioindicator of toxicity of heavy metals in river water. The test waters were collected at two sampling sites: at the beginning and the end of the Toledo River. The bulbs of A. cepa L. were grown in test water with nine concentration levels of copper, zinc and lead from 0.1 to 50 ppm. In the laboratory, the influence of these test liquids on the root growth was examined during five days. For test liquids containing below 0.03-ppm dissolved Cu the root growth was reduced by 40% However, the same reduction occurred for 1-ppm dissolved Zn. For dissolved Pb, results reveal toxicity above 0.1 and 0.6 ppm at the beginning and the end of the Toledo river water, respectively.

Zinc detoxification by a cyanobacterium from a metal contaminated bay in Brazil BABT
Andrade,Luciana; Keim,Carolina N.; Farina,Marcos; Pfeiffer,Wolfgang C..
We describe here the trapping of zinc in polyphosphate granules of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis aquatilis NPBS-3. Cells were cultured in 25 µM of zinc chloride and prepared for electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Some ultrastructural features were changed by zinc exposure, the increase of glycogen granules number being the main change. The polyphosphate granules contained phosphorus, sulphur, calcium, iron and zinc. The trapping of zinc in polyphosphate granules seemed to be an effective way of detoxifying the metal and surviving in the bay. As a non-specific mechanism, these polyphosphate granules could also be effective in trapping other metals in excess.

Huaynate,Rizal Alcides Robles; Thomaz,Maria Cristina; Kronka,Rodolfo Nascimento; Fraga,Alessandro Luís; Scandolera,Antônio João; Budiño,Fábio Enrique Lemos.
This study aimed to verify the effect of diets with different doses (0, 100, 200 and 300 ppm) of probiotic on daily fecal production (DFP) and level of macro and micro minerals in feces of nursing (1st and 2nd initial phases) and growing pigs and during total period. The DFP, as percentage of body weight, was different (P<0.05) among treatments only at 1st initial phase. Fecal levels of macro and micro minerals were similar (P>0.05) among treatments, with exception of calcium and sodium excretion at 1st initial phase and calcium, zinc and nickel during total period. The addition of a poliprobiotic to diets do not affect fecal production of nursing and growing pigs. However, the presence of microorganisms, added (levels of 200 and 300 ppm) in diets...

Relations among Valencia orange yields with soil and leaf nutrients in Northwestern Paraná, Brazil BABT
Fidalski,Jonez; Auler,Pedro Antonio Martins; Tormem,Valdomiro.
The Valencia orange orchards established on soils of low fertility in the Northwest region of Paraná State, Brazil, have showed symptoms of Mg deficiency and reduced fruit yields. The objective of this study was to verify the relationship between yield with soil and leaf nutrients during 1996/97 growing season. Two sites of low and high productivity were selected in seven orchards. Leaf and soil samples (fertilized rows and interrows) were collected in 1996. The results showed that the citrus yields were negatively related with soil Mg/K and Ca+Mg/K ratios in the fertilized rows, and fruit weight positively correlated with leaf Zn in the low productivity orchards. The fruit weight was positively related with leaf Ca and soil Ca in the fertilized rows of...

We have demonstrated that central administration of zinc in minute amounts induces a significant antidipsogenic action in dehydrated rats as well as in rats under central cholinergic and angiotensinergic stimulation. Here we show that acute third ventricle injections of zinc also block water intake induced by central ß-adrenergic stimulation in Wistar rats (190-250 g). Central inhibition of opioid pathways by naloxone reverses the zinc-induced antidipsogenic effect in dehydrated rats. After 120 min, rats receiving third ventricle injections of isoproterenol (160 nmol/rat) exhibited a significant increase in water intake (5.78 ± 0.54 ml/100 g body weight) compared to saline-treated controls (0.15 ± 0.07 ml/100 g body weight). Neo-Timm staining in the thalamus of chronically epileptic rats BJMBR
Hamani,C.; Paulo,I. de; Mello,L.E.A.M..
The thalamus is an important modulator of seizures and is severely affected in cholinergic models of epilepsy. In the present study, chronically epileptic rats had their brains processed for neo-Timm and acetylcholinesterase two months after the induction of status epilepticus with pilocarpine. Both controls and pilocarpine-treated animals presented neo-Timm staining in the anterodorsal nucleus, laterodorsal nucleus, reticular nucleus, most intralaminar nuclei, nucleus reuniens, and rhomboid nucleus of the thalamus, as well as in the zona incerta. The intensity of neo-Timm staining was similar in control and pilocarpine-treated rats, except for the nucleus reuniens and the rhomboid nucleus, which had a lower intensity of staining in the epileptic group.
