A habitat-based simulation framework to design tag-recapture experiments for tunas in the Indian Ocean. Application to the skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) population. OceanDocs
Olivier, M.A.Y..
The IOTC initiated a discussion to organize a large scale tagging program concerning the major tropical tuna species and fisheries. According to the terms of reference for the working party on tagging (Anon., 1999), prospective simulations are needed to help designing tag -recapture experiments. The purpose of this paper is to present the methodology developed to help designing the future tagging program. It is based on three stages: tag recovery simulations with an habitat -based advection-diffusion-reaction model; bootstrapping of the recovery data sets; population parameter estimation and comparison of scenarii. Different scenarii are studied to check the reliability of the method and its ability to compare various t agging experimental designs....

Proceedings of the INCO-DEV International Workshop on Policy Options for the Sustainable Use of Coral Reefs and Associated Ecosystems OceanDocs
The present report contains the proceedings of the INCO-DEV International Workshop on “Policy Options for the Sustainable Use of Coral Reefs and Associated Ecosystems” convened in Mombasa, Kenya, 19-22 June 2000. It was convened to address issues associated with the ongoing degradation of coral reefs and associated ecosystems. This degradation takes place inspite of an impressing body of research results and and increasing number of technical solutions becoming available. Policy options for the sustainable use are only feasible if they allow reconciling the requirements of conservation with the economic and social demands of the people relying on these natural resources. By its very nature this challenge of managing coral reef ecosystems sustainably calls...

Collection of statistical and biological information on the Réunion Island swordfish fishery. OceanDocs
Poisson, F.; Guyomard, D.; René, F..
During the last five years, the local swordfish (Xiphias gladius) longline fishery has experienced rapid growth and development. The longline catches reached more than 2,300 t in 1997. Responsibility for collecting data on Réunion fisheries for submission to FAO lies with the local fisheries office “Direction Départementale des Affaires Maritimes” (DDAM). Moreover, since 1993, IFREMER has been collecting and compiling scientific and technical information on longline fisheries operating in the French EEZ and international waters. Data are collected from voluntary maintenance of logbooks thanks to regular at-sea and landing samplings, as well as on-board scientific observers. This paper presents the characteristics of this new longline fishery, describes the...

The biology and distribution of Haplochromis spp in the Nyanza Gulf prior to the total invasion of the Gulf of Nile perch, Lates niloticus (L) OceanDocs
Mwalo, O.M..
The work reported was conducted during the watershed period of 1976 when Nile perch (Lates niloticus) started to replace Haplochromis spp. in dominance in the Nyanza Gulf of Lake Victoria. Seventy four "groups" of Haplochromis species flock obtained from a stock assessment survey of that year were used in the study. The length of fish examined varied between 57 and 237 mm total length, and between 1 and 182 g wet weight, with means of 101.05 mm and 18.53 g respectively. Frequency distribution curves for both sexes were unimodal with a maximum between 70 and 130 mm. The t-test showed that the two sexes came from the same population. Clutch size per fish (mean weight 25.3 g and mean total length 106.7 mm) was 78 eggs. The minimum size at maturity was 89 mm...

Trends in the Seychelles tuna fishery. OceanDocs
IOTC.
Distant water fishing nations (DWFN) began longlining for tuna in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) in the early 1950s, initiated by the Japanese soon followed by the Taiwanese (1954) and Koreans (1960). Large scale industrial purse seining began in 1983 when the French and Spanish fleets moved into the Western Indian Ocean from the tropical Atlantic. By 1986 some 6 % of the world tuna catch (143,099t out of 2,400,000t) was coming from the WIO purse seiners; by 1997 this had risen to 14 %. Virtually all the purse seiners active in the WIO are licensed to fish in the Seychelles EEZ; SFA's data therefore reflect the entire WIO purse seine catch (based upon daily catch and effort reports or logbooks which must be provided to SFA by all licensed vessels). At...

Lithostratigraphic Summary For Leg 175: Angola-Benguela Upwelling System OceanDocs
Anderson, L.; Maslin, M.A.; Jansen, F.; Lin, H.; Pufahl, P.K.; Pérez, M.; Brüchert, V.; Vidal, L..
During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 175, 40 holes were drilled at 13 sites, and 8003 m were recovered with the aim of reconstructing the late Neogene history of the Angola-Benguela upwelling system on the southwest African margin. This system is one of the great upwelling regions of the world and is characterized by organic-rich sediments that provide an excellent record of productivity back to the middle Miocene. Understanding the sedimentology and stratigraphy of these sediments will provide important new information on the paleoceanography of this region, including the complex role the ocean plays in global carbon cycling and climate change. This contribution summarizes the sedimentologic and stratigraphic data compiled on board the JOIDES Resolution...

Efecto de niveles de proteína en la dieta sobre el crecimiento de juveniles de Camarón Rosado (Farfantepenaeus notialis) OceanDocs
Galindo, J.; Fraga, I.; Artiles, M.A.; de Arazoza, M.; Alvarez, J.S.; Pelegrín, E..
To assess the effect of protein levels in diet on growth of pink shrimp juveniles (Farfantepenaeus notialis), two completely randomly experimental designs were carried out, one at laboratory scale during 8 weeks and the second one in fertilized earthen ponds during 20 weeks. Samples of pink shrimps obtained after spawning in the laboratory, were used. Isocaloric practical diets containing 35, 40 and 45% were used in the first experiment and 40 and 45% protein in the second one. In both trials, shrimps fed with 45% protein diet reached the highest growths. The nutritional factors assessed were always better in that organisms fed with the diet of higher protein content. The histological analysis of the hepatopancreas in shrimp feds with diets containing...

Review of data collection and processing system, and revision of statistics for the Taiwanese deep-sea longline fishery operated in the Indian Ocean. OceanDocs
Chang, S.K.; Wang, S.B..
Taiwan reorganized the catch statistics compiling group in 1996, with changes proposed in its data processing system. Through joint work between ICCAT experts and Taiwanese scientists, the system was carefully reviewed and verified. During the review, the need for revising the historical catch statistics was noted. The revision of Atlantic data was proposed and accepted by ICCAT in 1997. This paper gives the revision on Indian Ocean longline statistics with brief description on the new system. Major changes in total catches were due to the re-estimation of landings of bigeye and yellowfin tunas for six years based on Japanese import information, recovery of sales records of swordfish and application of conversion factors to processed weight reported...

Management Issues for the Sustainable Use of Lagoon Fish Resources OceanDocs
Entsua-Mensah, M.; Ofori-Danson, P.K.; Koranteng, K.A..
Coastal lagoons form an integral part of marine fisheries and provide important spawning and nursery grounds for many fish species. The economic contributions of lagoon fisheries have not been given adequate consideration by fisheries authorities. Ghana's 550-km coastline includes over 90lagoons. These lagoons and their wetlands provide valuable products and services, which include supporting the fisheries, absorbing floodwaters and protecting biodiversity. They also serve as roosting, nesting and feeding sites for many species of birds. Through the support of the World Bank and the Global Environmental Facility, Ghana has designated five coastal wetland areas as Ramsar sites due to their importance as fishing areas and as roosting, nesting and feeding...

Preliminary studies of age and growth of bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) in the western Indian Ocean. OceanDocs
Stequert, B.; Conand, F..
The age and growth of Bigeye tuna from the western Indian Ocean was investigated using both otolith and first dorsal spine. Microincrements, considered as daily depositions , were observed on transverse section of sagittal otoliths of 154 bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus); they were counted to determine age and establish growth curve. The von Bertalanffy growth curve is FL = 303.9 (1 – e-0.000397 ( t+167.15)), where FL is fork length in cm and t in days. The fish reaches 58 cm at 1 year, 91 cm at 2 years and 120 cm at 3 years of age. We also studied growth by analysing marks on the first dorsal spine of 140 fish. For fish which are 1 and 2 years old, the results obtained with spine and otoliths are comparable, but they are different for older fish . 'Research...
