The supermarket revolution and impacts on agricultural labor markets: Empirical evidence from Kenya AgEcon
Rao, Elizaphan J.O.; Qaim, Matin.
Many developing countries are currently experiencing a rapid expansion of supermarkets. New supermarket procurement systems could have important implications for farming and wider rural development. While previous studies have analyzed farm profit and income effects, possible employment effects have received much less attention. Building on data from a recent survey of vegetable farmers in Kenya, in this article a double-hurdle model of hired labor use is developed and estimated. Farmer participation in supermarket channels increases the likelihood of hiring labor by 13% and overall demand for hired labor by 38%. A gender disaggregation shows that positive employment effects are especially pronounced for female hired labor. Given that agricultural wage...

Production Incentives for Small Scale Farmers in Zimbabwe: The Case of Cotton and Maize AgEcon
Townsend, Rob F.; Thirtle, Colin G..
The paper presents an empirical investigation of the production response of small scale producers of maize and cotton for communal agriculture in Zimbabwe. The error correction model, which employs the concept of cointegration to avoid spurious regressions, is used in the analysis. The factors affecting maize output were the price of maize relative to seed, the number of marketing depots established in the communal areas and the number of loans provided to these farmers. The factors affecting cotton output were the increase in communal lands due to the resettlement program, the number of loans extended to small scale farmers and the price of cotton relative to seed. The weather played the most significant role in determining the quantity of maize sold.

Price Trends Are Similar for Fruits, Vegetables, and Snack Foods AgEcon
Kuchler, Fred; Stewart, Hayden.
An increase in the price of fruits and vegetables relative to less healthy foods could reduce consumers’ incentives to purchase fruits and vegetables and result in less healthy diets. Whether such a change in relative prices and incentives has occurred in the United States is difficult to prove because of substantial quality improvements in many fresh fruits and vegetables. For commonly consumed fresh fruits and vegetables for which quality has remained fairly constant, analysis of price trends reveals a price decline similar to that of dessert and snack foods. This price trend evidence suggests that the price of a healthy diet has not changed relative to an unhealthy one, although a healthy diet might not include every fresh fruit or vegetable currently...

An analysis of agricultural trade policy reforms and their impact on the EU, China and New Zealand AgEcon
Saunders, Caroline M.; Wreford, Anita; Rasin, Shanika.
As a consequence of global changes to trade policy, there are likely to be significant impacts on international agricultural trade. Clearly producers in the European Union (EU) will experience considerable changes to the structure of their industry, and for a country such as New Zealand, heavily dependent on agricultural exports, changes to policy and markets have the potential to significantly affect the economy. The potential competition from China in terms of agricultural commodities as well as its potential as an export destination for NZ are also important considerations. This paper presents an analysis of the impact of both World Trade Organisation (WTO) and Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform in the agricultural sectors of the EU, New Zealand,...

Resource-use Efficiency of Paddy Cultivation in Peechi Command Area of Thrissur District of Kerala: An Economic Analysis AgEcon
Suresh, A.; Reddy, T.R. Keshava.
This study undertaken in the Peechi Command Area of Thrissur district in the Kerala state, has examined the resource productivity and allocative as well as the technical efficiency of paddy production. The study has used the primary data collected from 71 rice farmers of the command area using the stratified random sampling. The cost of cultivation of paddy in the command area has been found as Rs 21603/ha, resulting in a BC ratio of 1.34. The elasticity coefficients for chemical fertilizers, farmyard manure and human labour have been observed significant and positive. The allocative efficiency has indicated that marginal return per one rupee increase under these heads would be Rs 2.83, Rs 1.57 and Rs 1.17, respectively. The average technical efficiency of...

Adding value to fresh and processed produce through product certification AgEcon
Napitupulu, Togar Alam; Natawidjaja, Ronnie S..
The current trend in world trade of agro-food, and the change in consumer demand patterns for food and agricultural products, has led to a fast growth of multi-national chains of retail stores in major cities in developing countries and growth in domestic retail store chains. Their presence opens a new market for high quality agro-food. While many products come from overseas, many can also be supplied locally by farmers or farmers’ co-operatives or associations provided that they meet the quality and supply standards required by the store. To study and identify specific benefits from this global economic trend that can be tapped by secondary crops farmers, specifically those living in medium altitude areas, two studies were conducted in two member...

Analyzing the Impact of Changes in Trade and Domestic Policies: The Case of the Soybean Complex AgEcon
Costa, Rafael F.; Xia, Yan; Susanto, Dwi; Rosson, C. Parr, III; Adcock, Flynn J..
This study analyzes the impacts of domestic and trade policy changes on the soybean complex using a Stochastic Equilibrium Displacement Model (SEDM). Three different policies, Loan Deficiency Payments (LDP), transportation costs and export taxes are considered in the analysis. The results indicate that Brazil benefits from a reduction in transportation costs and becomes more competitive in the global soybean market. Brazilian exports of soybeans increase due to relatively lower export prices. However, Brazil gains little improvement in the export competitiveness of the soybean joint products, soybean meal and oil. A lower U.S. LDP rate results in the loss of competitiveness for the United States in the world soybean market. Furthermore, the results show...

Current Changes in New Zealand Agriculture: A Review AgEcon
Johnson, R.W.M..
In the period under review the New Zealand agricultural sector has continued to be sensitive to changes in macroeconomic policies in the economy as a whole. This has not altered with the change of Government in October 1990. The combined forces of low commodity prices, increased costs, and government policy changes brought about a period of readjustment through 1985-86 and 1986-87 which now appears to be completed. Recovery was assisted by favourable terms of trade through 1988-89 and 1989-90. Output from the agricultural sector appears to have stabilised rather than decreased; the downturn in the terms of trade in the 1990-91 season has brought about a further reduction in investment and incomes.

Effects of Family, Friends, and Relative Prices on Fruit and Vegetable Consumption by African American Youths AgEcon
Zhylyevskyy, Oleksandr; Jensen, Helen H.; Garasky, Steven B.; Cutrona, Carolyn E.; Gibbons, Frederick X..
Facilitating healthy eating among young people, particularly among minorities who are at high risk for gaining excess weight, is at the forefront of the current policy discussions in the U.S. We investigate the effects of social interactions and relative prices on fruit and vegetable consumption by African American youths. We estimate a simultaneous equation ordered probit model of food intake using rich behavioral data from the Family and Community Health Study and price data from the Economic Research Service’s Quarterly Food-at-Home Price Database. We find the presence of endogenous effects between a youth and parent, but not between a youth and friend. Lower relative prices of fruits and vegetables tend to increase intakes. Results suggest that health...

Evaluation of Alternative Base Periods for a National Counter Cyclical Payment Program for Rice, Upland Cotton, Corn, Wheat, Soybeans and Sorghum AgEcon
Richardson, James W.; Smith, Edward G.; Womack, Abner W.; Houston, Christy M..
A risk analysis of a national counter cyclical payment (CCP) program for six crops was completed for one year. National planted acre yield risk over the 1986-2000 period was used with FAPRI’s stochastic projection of crop prices for 2001 in the analysis. Four alternative base periods for triggering a CCP were evaluated. Three Added AMTA scenarios and a Base scenario of no additional market loss or CCP were also run for each of the crops.

Environmental Standards and Their Linkage to Support Instruments of the EU Common Agricultural Policy AgEcon
Osterburg, Bernhard; Nitsch, Heike; Kristensen, Lone.
Agricultural support payments in the EU are increasingly connected to compliance with environmental standards, through cross-compliance and "Good Farming Practice"-conditions. In this paper, this relatively new approach is analysed regarding targeting, compatibility with legal procedures, and effects on income and production. Compliance with standards is reinforced by more systematic controls and reductions of support payments. As farms are affected by such sanctions to a different extent, risk-analysis for selection of farms to be controlled is a crucial element of implementation. The real environmental impacts have to be considered, especially if indirect control indicators are applied. Furthermore, technical assistance and audits have to be promoted for...

Modeling Agricultural Innovation in a Rapidly Developing Country: The Case of Chinese Pesticide Industry AgEcon
Shi, Guanming; Pray, Carl E..
Technology and innovation play an increasingly important role in the economic development of both developed and developing countries. We investigate how policy and market factors influence firms’ (or other potential innovators’) decisions on innovation or imitation by developing a conceptual model and then empirically testing it using pesticide innovation data from a rapidly developing country, China. We find that the government encouraged local innovation by opening regions to more international trade, more investment in public research and education, strengthening intellectual property right (IPR) enforcement, and limiting the role of foreign inventors. However, the role of the extension of patent life in the early 1990s has little impact. Theory and...

Revisiting the “Cotton Problem”: A comparative analysis of cotton reforms in Sub-Saharan Africa AgEcon
Delpeuch, Claire; Vandeplas, Anneleen; Swinnen, Johan F.M..
The cotton sector has been amongst the most regulated in Africa, and still is to a large extent in West and Central Africa (WCA), despite repeated reform recommendations by international donors. On the other hand, orthodox reforms in East and Southern Africa (ESA) have not always yielded the expected results. This paper uses a stylized contracting model to investigate the link between market structure and equity and efficiency in sub-Saharan cotton sectors and analyze the potential consequences of orthodox reforms in WCA. We argue that the level of the world price and of government intervention, the degree of post-reform competition, as well as the degree of parastatal inefficiency, all contribute to making reforms less attractive (but not less pressing)...
