Degree of multicollinearity and variables involved in linear dependence in additive-dominant models PAB
Petrini,Juliana; Dias,Raphael Antonio Prado; Pertile,Simone Fernanda Nedel; Eler,Joanir Pereira; Ferraz,José Bento Sterman; Mourão,Gerson Barreto.
The objective of this work was to assess the degree of multicollinearity and to identify the variables involved in linear dependence relations in additive-dominant models. Data of birth weight (n=141,567), yearling weight (n=58,124), and scrotal circumference (n=20,371) of Montana Tropical composite cattle were used. Diagnosis of multicollinearity was based on the variance inflation factor (VIF) and on the evaluation of the condition indexes and eigenvalues from the correlation matrix among explanatory variables. The first model studied (RM) included the fixed effect of dam age class at calving and the covariates associated to the direct and maternal additive and non-additive effects. The second model (R) included all the effects of the RM model except the...

Performance of crossbred steers post-weaned in an integrated crop-livestock system and finished in a feedlot PAB
Costa,Patrícia Monteiro; Barbosa,Fabiano Alvim; Alvarenga,Ramon Costa; Guimarães,Sérgio Teixeira; Lampeão,Ângelo André; Winkelströter,Larissa Kretli; Maciel,Isabella Cristina de Faria.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of crossbred steers post-weaned in an integrated crop-livestock system (ICL) and finished in a feedlot, fed either a high-level concentrate diet or whole corn with no roughage. Weaned calves of two breed groups - ½ Angus × ½ Nellore, and ½ Charolais × ¼ Angus × ¼ Nellore - were allotted in a completely randomized experimental design (CRD). During the rainy season, the ½ Angus × ½ Nellore animals showed a higher performance than the ½ Charolais × ¼ Angus ×¼ Nellore ones, with 0.748 and 0.490 kg average daily gain, respectively. The productivity in the post-weaning period was 926 kg ha-1 body weight in a 11-month period, in the ICL system. Subsequently, the animals were confined and fed...

Breeding objectives for a Nellore cattle rearing system PAB
Carvalho,Caio Victor Damasceno; Bittencourt,Thereza Cristina Calmon de.
Abstract:The objective of this work was to define the traits that should be included as breeding objectives for Nellore cattle, according to simulations with a bio-economic model for rearing systems. The economic values (EVs) of the traits were calculated as the differences between the profits due to an increased performance of 1% in each trait, with the others traits remaining constant. To determine the impact of each selection on the revenue system, two scenarios were simulated based on the traits being selected. In the first scenario, the adopted selection criteria were: weaning weight (WW), weaning rate (WR), yearling weight (YW), and mature cow weight (MCW). In the second scenario, the cumulative productivity (CP) of dams was used as an indirect...

Accuracy of genomic selection predictions for hip height in Brahman cattle using different relationship matrices PAB
Farah,Michel Marques; Fortes,Marina Rufino Salinas; Kelly,Matthew; Porto-Neto,Laercio Ribeiro; Meira,Camila Tangari; Carreño,Luis Orlando Duitama; Fonseca,Ricardo da; Moore,Stephen Stewart.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of genomic information on the genetic evaluation of hip height in Brahman cattle using different matrices built from genomic and pedigree data. Hip height measurements from 1,695 animals, genotyped with high-density SNP chip or imputed from 50 K high-density SNP chip, were used. The numerator relationship matrix (NRM) was compared with the H matrix, which incorporated the NRM and genomic relationship (G) matrix simultaneously. The genotypes were used to estimate three versions of G: observed allele frequency (HGOF), average minor allele frequency (HGMF), and frequency of 0.5 for all markers (HG50). For matrix comparisons, animal data were either used in full or divided into calibration (80%...

Cavani,Ligia; Silva,Rafael Medeiros de Oliveira; Carreño,Luis Orlando Duitama; Ono,Rafael Keith; Bertipaglia,Tássia Souza; Farah,Michel Marques; Millen,Danilo Domingues; Fonseca,Ricardo da.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic diversity of Brahman cattle in Brazil with pedigree analysis. Genealogical records of a subpopulation were used considering all pedigree information (Pt) and the pedigree information divided into two periods (P1, from 1994 to 2004; and P2, from 2005 to 2012) or according to the raising system (Ppt, animals on pasture; or Pst, on stable). Estimates were obtained for average inbreeding coefficients, generation intervals (GI), number of equivalent known generation (CGE), number of founders (Nf), effective number of founders (fe), effective number of ancestors (fa), and founder genome equivalents (fg). The average inbreeding coefficients were 11.97, 7.79, 11.95, 11.74, and 11.31% for Pt, P1, P2,...

Mitochondrial DNA of Nellore and European x Nellore crossing cattle of high performance PAB
Curi,Rogério Abdallah; Mota,Lígia Souza Lima Silveira da; Silveira,Antônio Carlos.
The objective of this work was to evaluate, through a polymorphism in the ND5 gene of the bovine mitochondrial DNA, the frequency of Bos taurus indicus mtDNA individuals in a sample of Nellore purebred origin animals (n = 69) and crossbred animals originated from crosses of European sires and Nellore purebred origin females (n = 275). Only 2.26% (8/354) of the animals presented Bos taurus indicus mtDNA. The high frequency of Bos taurus taurus mtDNA in these animals can be a consequence of selection, once the animals studied are originated from selected lineages of high performance for meat production.

Reduction of the bull: cow ratio in the Brazilian Pantanal PAB
Sereno,José Robson Bezerra; Costa e Silva,Eliane Vianna da; Mores,Cristiano Mougenot.
This work was conducted to study alternatives for reduction of the bull:cow ratio in the Brazilian lowland and, therefore, lower the production costs for the local beef cattle industry. The ratios 1:10, 1:25, and 1:40 were used in native pastures with a mean stocking rate of 0.27 mature animal unit per hectare over two consecutive breeding seasons. Statistical analysis did not show any effect (P>0.05) of year (P = 0.2097), animal category (P = 0.0773), bull:cow ratio (0.8134) on reproductive performance. However, the pregnancy rate in a multiple bull system was higher (P = 0.0228) than in the individual bull system. An evaluation of the economic impact of this management system in the extensive Lowland herds showed that at the ratio of 1:10 the bulls...

Economic Injury Level of Canjiqueira in Native Pastures in Pantanal of Nhecolândia Planta Daninha
BERSELI,C.; BONO,J.A.M.; SANTOS,S.A.; PEREIRA,F.A.R.; REIS NETO,J.F..
ABSTRACT: Pantanal plain has large extensions of land formed by many types of landscapes suitable to extensive livestock system. Open grasslands and lowlands are formed by forage such as grasses and forbs widely consumed by cattle. However, climatic and human factors can promote the dissemination of invasive shrub species such as canjiqueira (Byrsonima cydoniifolia A. Juss) making it necessary, in many cases, the human intervention to control the invasion. The present work had as objective to determine the economic threshold level to control canjiqueira through two methods: tractor driven blade and link chains pulled by tractor in different invasion levels plants per hectare. Economic Threshold proved to be a tool for efficient and effective management for...

Análise do comportamento dos preços do boi gordo e do boi magro na pecuária de corte paulista, no período de 1995 a 2006 AgEcon
Sachs, Raquel Castellucci Caruso; Pinatti, Eder.
The paper analyzed the impacts of the price of finishing steers on the price of backgrounding steers in the State of São Paulo from January 1995 to January 2007. The ADF Unit Root test, the Granger causality test, the Johansen’s co-integration test, and the method of Vector Auto-Regression (VAR) were used. In this period, the results indicated that exist a unidirectional relationship among the prices of finishing steers and backgrounding steers, confirming the importance of the prices of finishing steers on the prices formation of the backgrounding steers, but the prices had no equilibrium relationship in the long term.

An Exploratory Assessment of the Economic Impact of Forage Options for Beef Production on Smallholder Farms in the Red Soils Region of China AgEcon
MacLeod, Neil D.; Wen, Shilin; Hu, Mingwen.
The rapidly growing beef cattle herd of the Peoples Republic of China is largely carried as small numbers of animals on smallholder farms. These enterprises have traditionally focussed on cereal and vegetable crops. Limited plantings of specialised forages combined with a poor knowledge of ruminant nutrition by sm allholder farmers represent a serious challenge to establishing genuinely sustainable beef enterprises for this sector. Government policy to promote beef cattle production on smallholder farms is now focussing on the use of new forages and improved feeding practices. The paper draws on some economic insights from an Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) project that is exploring options for integrating the planting and...

Cow-Calf Producer Interest in Retained Ownership AgEcon
Franken, Jason R.V.; Parcell, Joseph L.; Patterson, David J.; Smith, Michael F.; Poock, Scott.
The beef industry’s share of domestic meat demand continues to decline, as increasing vertical coordination in pork and poultry contribute to these industries’ ability to offer convenient, consistent, and less expensive products. For such vertical coordination to be effective, incentives must be properly aligned so that those responsible for making the most important investments for system profitability are appropriately compensated. This study demonstrates that cow-calf producers who invest in quality registered cattle and those who are interested in incorporating feedlot and carcass data into herd management decisions are also more interested in retained ownership.

The analysis of market integration of agricultural commodities based on price information are limited because the effects of transaction costs are not considered in the adjustment process. The main objective of this paper was to estimate the possible transaction costs impacts on market integration of beef cattle between the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo. It was estimated a Threshold Vector Error Correction Model (TVEC model) using monthly price data for the period from January 1972 to August 2005. The results indicated the presence of threshold cointegration implying that transaction costs have important effect on the price adjustment process.
