Mercadante,Maria Eugênia Zerlotti; Caliman,Ana Paula de Melo; Canesin,Roberta Carrilho; Bonilha,Sarah Figueiredo Martins; Berndt,Alexandre; Frighetto,Rosa Toyoko Shiraishi; Magnani,Elaine; Branco,Renata Helena.
Feed intake and average daily gain (ADG) in Nellore cattle were determined to calculate residual feed intake in two performance tests: first during the growth phase (RFIgrowth) and then during a measurement of the methane emission phase (RFImet). During the RFIgrowth test, 62 males and 56 females were classified as low-, medium-, and high-RFI. Enteric methane emission was measured in 46 animals; 23 males used for RFImet measurement plus 23 females (22 low-RFIgrowth and 24 high-RFIgrowth). Diet consisted of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu hay (445 g/kg DM) and concentrate (555 g/kg DM). During the RFIgrowth and RFImet phases, DMI was lower in the animals with low RFI, with no difference in ADG. Residual feed intake was -0.359 and 0.367 kg DM/d for low- and...

Silva,Luiz Henrique Oliveira; Bonilha,Sarah Figueiredo Martins; Branco,Renata Helena; Cyrillo,Joslaine Noely dos Santos Gonçalves; Mercadante,Maria Eugênia Zerlotti.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to develop accurate regression equations to predict body composition of Nellore cattle using chemical composition of the 9th, 10th, and 11th ribs and to evaluate the models proposed by analyzing mean and linear bias. Sixty-seven Nellore bulls were slaughtered and slaughter body weight (SBW), hot carcass weight (HCW), and 9th-, 10th-, and 11th-rib-cut weight (RCW) were measured. Empty body composition was obtained after grinding, homogenizing, sampling, chemical analysis, and pooling (blood, skin, head + feet, viscera, and carcass). Chemical components were determined in rib cut, carcass, and empty body: protein (RCP, HCP, and EBP), fat (RCF, HCF, and EBF), ash (RCA, HCA, and EBA), and water (RCWt, HCWt, and EBWt)....

Modeling the effect of the age of dam at calving on the weaning weight of Charolais-Zebu crossbred calves R. Bras. Zootec.
Toral,Fábio Luiz Buranelo; Torres Júnior,Roberto Augusto de Almeida; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Silva,Luiz Otávio Campos da; Reis Filho,João Cruz.
The objective of this study was to evaluate alternatives for modeling the age of dam at calving (AOD) effect on the weaning weight of Charolais-Zebu crossbred calves. Data from 56,965 calves were analyzed, using statistical models considering the fixed effects of the contemporary groups, sire and dam genetic groups, and AOD. The AOD effect was fitted to models using annual age classes, and ordinary quadratic to quintic-ordered polynomials (OP) or segmented polynomials (SP) with two, three, four, six and twelve evenly spaced intervals. In the case of segmented polynomials, general linear and quadratic effects and only one quadratic additional term from each knot were considered. The AOD effects were nested within sex of calf in all cases. According to the...

Influence of temperament-related genes on live weight traits of Charolais cows R. Bras. Zootec.
Garza-Brenner,Estela; Sifuentes-Rincón,Ana María; Rodríguez-Almeida,Felipe Alonso; Randel,Ronald D.; Parra-Bracamonte,Gaspar Manuel; Arellano-Vera,Williams.
Abstract We investigated whether a panel of molecular markers previously associated with temperament has an effect on live growth traits. Phenotypic data from 412 Charolais cows categorized according to their age in adult and young cows were used to determine Pearson's correlations between birth (BW), weaning (WW), and yearling live (YW) weight and temperament traits (measured as exit velocity [EV] and temperament score [TS]). For association analysis, selective genotyping of a group of 80 cows identified as the most docile and temperamental were genotyped with a 151-SNP (single-nucleotide polymorphisms) panel of molecular markers previously associated with temperament. Significant Pearson's correlations between birth weight and weaning weight and the two...

Genetic parameters and relationships between heifers rebreeding and hip height in Nellore cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Boligon,Arione Augusti; Albuquerque,Lucia Galvão de.
The objective of this study was to estimate heritability and verify the genetic correlations between heifers subsequent rebreeding with weaning hip height (WHH) and yearling hip height (YHH), using Bayesian inference. The (co)variance components and genetic parameters were estimated using an animal nonlinear (threshold) model for subsequent rebreeding and an animal linear model for WHH and YHH. The animal model included the contemporary group as the systematic effect and direct additive genetic and residual effects as random effects. Genetic maternal and maternal permanent environment effects were also considered in the model for WHH. Covariables considered were: rest period (linear effect), for subsequent rebreeding; animal age at measurement and age of...

Santos,Sandra Aparecida; Souza,Geraldo Silva e; Costa,Ciniro; Abreu,Urbano Gomes Pinto de; Alves,Fabiana Villa; Ítavo,Luís Carlos Vinhas.
Weight-age and hip height-age relations of Nellore calves, from birth to 10 months old were fitted using a logistic model including sex and year of birth as fixed effects. Calves and their dams were reared on natural pasture using continuous grazing system. The crude protein content and total digestible nutrients were analyzed for pasture selected by the animals. The weights of the calves were adjusted to 205 days and 365 days. There were no significant effects of sex and birth year on the growth curve parameters, but there were significant effects of sex on hip height. The average weight (a parameter) at 10 months of age was 170 kg and the inflection point was observed at 93.5 days old. When weight-age and hip height-age curves were combined in the same...

Estimation of genetic parameters for growth traits in Tabapuã cattle using a multi-trait model R. Bras. Zootec.
Menezes,Gilberto Romeiro de Oliveira; Torres,Robledo de Almeida; Torres Júnior,Roberto Augusto de Almeida; Silva,Luiz Otávio Campos da; Gondo,Andrea; Euclydes,Ricardo Frederico.
To provide information that can contribute to the genetic evaluation and selection in Tabapuã cattle, genetic parameters were estimated for growth traits using a multi-trait animal model. (Co)variance components were estimated by a Bayesian approach using the Gibbs Sampler. Moderate and similar responses to selection are expected when selecting for weights at the four ages evaluated, since the direct heritability estimates were similar and of average magnitude (0.18 to 0.19). The direct and maternal additive genetic correlations between all pairs of weights were higher than 0.70, indicating a high degree of association between the four traits. This suggests that using any of them as selection criteria will result in correlated response in the others and...

Simulation and economic analysis of bovine sex selection R. Bras. Zootec.
Beltrame,Renato Travassos; Quirino,Celia Raquel; Barioni,Luís Gustavo; Lima,Vera Fernanda Martins Hossepian de.
A simulation model implemented in the programming software Delphi XE® was applied to evaluate sex selection in bovine. The hypothesis under investigation was that a dynamic model with stochastic and deterministic elements could detect the sexed semen technique to minimize pregnancy cost and to determine the adequate number of recipients required for in vivo (ET) and in vitro embryo production (IVP) in the proposed scenarios. Sex selection was compared through semen sexed using flow cytometry (C1) and density gradient centrifugation techniques (C2) in ET and IVP. Sensibility analyses were used to identify the adequate number of recipients for each scenario. This number was reinserted into the model to determine the biological and financial values that...
