Literature shows that management factors like the type of defoliation and seed mixture have a strong influence on yield, forage quality and N2-fixation of grass clover mixtures. In comparison to harvesting, grazing is cheaper and for economical reasons a maximum grazing period is aimed. Grazing over winter time can cause irreparable damages to the pasture. This problem is of minor relevance for grass clover grown on arable land in its last production year, which it’s ploughed anyway in the following spring. This study compares different grass clover mixtures concerning yield, forage quality and suitability for winter grazing. Grass clover swards varying with respect to the following experimental factors: I. com-panion grass species (perennial ryegrass... |

Using biomass from intercrops as feedstock for biogas production makes it possible to produce renewable energy without compromising food production. In order that using intercrops for biogas and fertilizing with liquid digestate is sustainable, it must be secured that this practice does not have adverse effects on soil fertility. Two-year randomised field experiments were conducted on two different soil types near Bruck/Leitha (A). On chernozem soil, soil pH and composition of the cation exchange complex were hardly influenced by liquid digestate. Also on a parachernozem with pH 5.9 short-term effects of liquid digestate were small due to the low salt content and high C/N ratio of the digestate. Nevertheless the distinct increase in soil K content shows... |

This is the final report of Defra project OF0401. The attached report document starts with an Executive Summary, from which this text is extracted. The aim of this 1 year study was to examine how key functional indicators of soil quality are affected by contrasting organic and conventional management regimes. In particular, the project investigated the impact of contrasting fertility building regimes on soil quality, focussing on the initial 5-year period following conversion from conventional to organic production. Five 0.8 ha areas at HRI-Wellesbourne were selected for study. These were: two organic vegetable rotations supporting contrasting fertility building regimes, an organic arable rotation, a grass-clover ley, and a conventionally managed cereal... |

The reduction of soil tillage intensity is of special interest for organic farmers. To study the influence of reduced tillage on soil properties and weed vegetation field plots were set up in 1992 on the FAM Research farm in southern Germany. From 1999 till 2002 weed vegetation was recorded including soil seed bank, plant density, number of flowering plants and biomass. Reduced tillage intensity did not influence the weed population dymamics but did influence the species composition. Elymus repens, Apera spica-venti and Poa annua were promoted by a tillage regime that omitted deep ploughing in four of seven years. The cultivation of grass/ley mixtures plays an important role in crop rotations of organic farming systems e.g. as part of the weed management.... |

For testing how cover crops and different fertilization managements affect the soil physical properties in a plough based tillage system, a five-year crop rotation experiment (field pea, white potato, common barley undersown with red clover, red clover, and winter wheat) was set. The rotation was managed under four different farming systems: two conventional: with and without mineral fertilizers and two organic, both with winter cover crops (later ploughed and used as green manure) and one where cattle manure was added yearly. The measurements conducted were penetration resistance, soil water content, porosity, water permeability, and organic carbon. Yearly variations were linked to the number of tillage operations, and a cumulative effect of soil organic... |

This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference of the Colloquium of Organic Researchers (COR). Organic farming systems rely on the management of biological cycles for the provision of nutrients, which are crucial to maximising the production from the system. Rotations based on the use of grass-legume leys are central to the concept of organic farming systems, because they have the potential to support both animal production, and a subsequent, exploitative, arable cropping phase. A major challenge in organic farming is managing the supply of nitrogen, since it has a key role in governing both productivity and environmental impact. Hence, within a rotational system, there is a need to understand the complex interactions that are... |

The objective of this paper was to analyze six organic farms in northern Serbia in order to evaluate crop rotation composition and identify its role in cropping technology of the organic production. The major agronomic indicators of organic crop rotation were analyzed: number of crops and their ratio, number of different crop schemes and fields in rotation, land coverage with crops, crops structure, etc. Information was acquired by visiting and surveying farmers during the 2005/06 as well as reading their documentation required for certification. The obtained results showed that the farmers carried out production on a 3-4-year rotation basis. The cropping plan was strongly driven by market demands. Compromises with design and structure of the rotation were... |

In the developed regions of the world crops are today primarily grown as sole crops and monocultures. However, increasing awareness of the link between agricultural practise, environmental issues and long-term stability of existing food production systems has put focus on the role that greater crop diversity in time (crop rotation) and space (field size and mixed cropping systems) may play in reducing the extent of these problems. Intercropping represents one way of increasing crop diversity. As a result of differences in the way component crops respond to and affect the environment in which they are grown intercrops may use available growth resources (light, water and nutrients) more efficiently, reduce the prevalence of disease and pests and reduce weed... |

Intercrops are considered as less susceptible to pests and diseases and may inhibit weeds more efficiently resulting in enhanced yields and profitability. N2 fixation of legumes is an important nitrogen (N) input factor of Organic Farming systems and results in partly unused plant available soil N (PAN) in sole cropped faba beans. Simultaneously cultivated oilseeds may function as sinks for PAN and enhance biodiversity with all positive aspects. In this respect we investigated several oilseeds intercropped with faba beans at different row distances. Depending on row distance we analysed e.g. the use of soil nutrients and land equivalent ratio (LER). Intercropped oilseeds depleted PAN between FB rows significantly in early development. In 2007 yield... |

Intensive mechanical soil cultivation and herbicide treatment was often the preferred technology in vineyards in the second half of the 20th century. In the last decades we increasingly experienced the disadvantages of these technologies: soil degradation, erosion and deflation damages. The use of well-adapted cover-crop mixtures could be an alternative. In 2012 we started to study three different species-rich cover crop mixtures (Biocont-Ecovin, Legume mixture, Grass-herb mixture) in Hungarian vineyards. For 2013 we detected lower weed coverage in the inter-rows sown with the Grass-herb and Legume mixtures, while in control and Biocont-Ecovin inter-rows we detected increasing weed coverage. In the third year (2014) we found in case of every plot that... |
