Effect of quality assessment on cultivar performance in timothy variety testing in Finland Organic Eprints
Niskanen, Markku; Niemeläinen, O.; Jauhiainen, L.; Kurri, O..
Significant differences in quality parameters among varieties were recorded for yields of both the first and second cuts. Differences in D-values reflected the differences in earliness of varieties and differences in protein content reflected differences in the yield of a particular cut. Quality assessment in cultivar trials would motivate breeders to enhance their efforts in quality improvement.

Andersen, Naja Steen.

Spike productivity in relation to yield as criterion for emmer wheat breeding Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Stehno, Zdenek; Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Moudry, Jan.
Landraces, which are unbred cereal species, and include in particular the tetraploid emmer wheat, have become an important focus for the activities of local or organic farmers, processors and consumers of organic products. This study is based on analyses of the spike productivity, harvest index and grain yield of six emmer wheat landraces. It aims to find suitable criteria for the selection of cultivars and varieties which may contribute to the increase in the productivity of the emmer wheat. The cultivars and varieties most commonly used have short dense spikes which have a negative effect on the grain yield, as the spike density is negatively correlated with the weight of thousand grains (TGW), the weight of the grains in the spikes, the number of grains...

Mit Mikrobrötchen bessere Weizen finden Organic Eprints
Österle, N.; Müller, Karl-Josef.
The trade-value of organically grown wheat is mostly determined by the wet gluten content, the SDS-sedimentation value and the stirring number. Further information about wheat quality can be obtained through the rapid-mix test, however, both the rapid mix-test and laboratory parameters have been criticized for not displaying baking qualities adequately. In this study, 172 samples of organically grown wheat varieties and breeding lines were analyzed for their wet gluten content, SDS-sedimentation value, falling number and their performance in a baking test. A linear regression showed the highest correlation of the bread volume to the SDS-sedimentation value with R2=0,29. A multiple regression model explained 56% of the volume variation by the...

Hybrid Varieties for Organic Cereals? Prospects and acceptance of hybrid breeding for organic production Organic Eprints
Arncken, Christine; Dierauer, Hansueli.
Hybrid breeding utilizes the advantages characterizing F1 plants in a targeted manner: Vigour, uniformity, and a combination of all dominant traits of the parental lines. It gives breeders secure licences, as farmers can not save seed from hybrid varieties with a view to replanting. Regarding rye, the current advantages of hybrid varieties are primarily the higher yields but also improved resistances to lodging and sprouting. However, farmers can only benefit from higher yields if the limited market for organic rye in Switzerland can be expanded. The currently available hybrid rye varieties have higher susceptibility to leaf rust and ergot infections. The criticism of hybrid breeding and hybrid varieties concerns four areas: Firstly, the area of...

Differences in grain/straw ratio, protein content and yield in landraces and modern varieties of different wheat species under organic farming. Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Stehno, Zdenek; Capouchova, Ivana; Zechner, Elisabeth; Berger, Sandra; Grausgruber, Heinrich; Janovska, Dagmar; Moudry , Jan.
Hulled wheat species (einkorn, emmer, spelt) are presumed to be an alternative to bread wheat in organic agriculture since the yield penalty is less pronounced under organic farming and generally higher prices can be achieved for specialty grains. The present study analyzed differences between wheat species with respect to biomass production, harvest index, grain yield and protein content. Spring hulled wheat genetic resources and bread wheat check cultivars were grown in organic field trials in the Czech Republic and Austria between 2010 and 2012. Generally, hulled wheat species were inferior in grain yield and distribution of assimilates to the grain compared to modern bread wheat. Biomass production of some emmer and spelt landraces was similar to bread...

Quality Assessment of Summer and Autumn Carrots from a Biodynamic Breeding Project and Correlations of Physico-Chemical Parameters and Features determined by Picture Forming Methods Organic Eprints
Hagel, Ingo; Bauer, Dieter; Haneklaus, Silvia; Schnug, Ewald.
Assessment of product quality is of special significance in organic farming and includes the supervision of crop quality in different growing systems and the characterisation of different cultivars. Several methods have been developed and applied for this purpose, e.g., the physico-chemical analysis of crops, picture forming methods (PFMs) and plant observation. So far only limited information is available on the com-parability of these methods. This contribution aims to compare the results of the analysis of physico-chemical parameters of summer and autumn carrots with features determined by PFMs by means of correlation analysis. High and significant correlation coefficients were found between quality parameters of summer and autumn carrots from a...

Ghaouti, Lamiae; Vogt-Kaute, Werner; Link, Wolfgang.
