Growth of Brazilian beef production: effect of shocks of supply and demand Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Silva Neto,Waldemiro Alcântara da; Bacchi,Mirian Rumenos Piedade.
With the considerable growth of beef production in Brazil and the growth in beef exports as a backdrop, the main objective of this study is to identify the factors responsible for the excellent performance of this agribusiness sector. Conducting this study required the construction of a theoretical model that was capable of supporting the specification of the adjusted econometric model using vector autoregression with identification by the Bernanke process. The findings show that the main determinant of beef cattle growth and Brazilian beef exports is increased animal stock. Furthermore, productivity has a positive, albeit more modest, effect on beef production and exports. The results show that the increase of the number of cattle reduces costs to the...

Ultrasonography as a predicting tool for carcass traits of young bulls Scientia Agricola
Suguisawa,Liliane; Mattos,Wilson Roberto Soares; Oliveira,Henrique Nunes de; Silveira,Antônio Carlos; Arrigoni,Mário de Beni; Haddad,Cláudio Maluf; Chardulo,Luis Artur Loyola; Martins,Cyntia Ludovico.
Considerable resources have been allocated to support research in the development of non-invasive and non-destructive techniques for carcass composition and quality evaluation. Ultrasonography is a reliable and relatively low-cost technique that can be used. In the present study, real-time ultrasonography was used to predict ribeye area (REA) and subcutaneous fat thickness (FT) in live animals as compared to carcass measurements. Animals used were 115 yearling bull calves (initial body weight, 329 kg), kept under feedlot conditions, of four genetic groups (30, ½ Angus x Nellore; 30, ½ Canchim x Nellore; 30, ½ Simmental x Nellore, and 25 Nellore), and two finishing frame sizes (small and large). Four ultrasonographic measurements were taken every 28 days...

Mixed-effects growth curves in the valuation of Nellore sires Scientia Agricola
Giolo,Suely Ruiz; Henderson,Robin; Demétrio,Clarice Garcia Borges.
Cattle breeding programmes need objective criteria in order to evaluate and subsequently improve production systems. This work uses a logistic growth curve model for evaluating sires based on their progeny weight measured repeatedly over time. The parameters of the curve are described as a linear function of fixed and random effects. A Bayesian approach is used for the estimation. Analysis of the weights recorded on animals of the Nellore breed shows that growth curve models with fixed and random effects can be useful to evaluate and selecting sires.

Hanging the beef carcass by the forequarter to improve tenderness of the Longissimus dorsi and Biceps femoris muscles Scientia Agricola
Luchiari Filho,Albino; Macedo,Renato Prates; Pereira,Angélica Simone Cravo; Silva,Saulo da Luz e; Leme,Paulo Roberto; Feitosa,Guilherme.
Hanging beef carcasses in different configurations in the cooler affect some carcass muscle tenderness. Forty Nellore steer carcasses (ten per day) were chosen at random in a federally inspected slaughter plant and hanged alternate left and right sides either in the traditional way by the hindquarter (HQ) or by the forequarter (FQ) also called "tenderbife". Carcasses were selected from steers up to 30 months old and had an average hot carcass weight of 244.1 kg. These carcasses were chilled for 48 hours, when samples from the Longissimus dorsi (LD) at the 12th rib and the Biceps femoris (BF) at the P8 site were removed, kept under refrigeration (0-2ºC) for five days and frozen for future analysis. The temperature of the LD after 24 hours taken at the 12th...

Influence of genotype-environment interaction on the classification of Nellore bulls in Southern Brazil Animal Sciences
Bresolin, Tiago; Everling, Dionéia Magda; Rorato, Paulo Roberto Nogara; Braz, Camila Urbano; Breda, Fernanda Cristina.
The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of genotype-environment interaction, as well as its effects on the magnitude of genetic parameters and the classification of Nellore breeding bulls for the trait adjusted weight at 205 days (W205) on Southern Brazil. The components of (co)variance were estimated by Bayesian inference, using a linear-linear animal model in a bi-trait analysis. The proposed model for the analyses considers as random the direct additive genetic and maternal effects and residual effects, and as fixed effects the contemporary groups, sex, season of birth and weighing, and calving age as covariable  (linear and quadratic effects). The a posteriori mean estimates of the direct heritabilities for W205 in the three States varied...

This work was carried out to evaluate the animal performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality of crossbred heifers slaughtered at three different body weights. The heifers were slaughtered with 330 (Light), 360 (Medium) and 400 (Heavy) kg body weight. The final weight, average daily gain and carcass weight were greater for HEA heifers, intermediate for MED heifers and lower for LIG heifers. However, carcass dressing and pH were similar for the three heifers groups. Dripping loss, dissection loss and the muscle, fat and bone percentages on the 6th rib did not alter by slaughter weight. Slaughter weight did not affect the colour, shear force and lipid oxidation of meat. In conclusion, heavy heifers finished in pasture and that were...
