Maize in Thailand: Production Systems, Constraints, and Research Priorities AgEcon
Ekasingh, Benchaphun; Gypmantasiri, Phrek; Thong-Ngam, Kuson; Grudloyma, Pichet.
This is one of a series of seven in-depth country studies on maize production systems in Asia, funded by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). It is part of a project designed to promote sustainable intensification of maize production systems while ensuring equitable income growth and improved food security, especially for poor households that depend on maize. Maize is one of five major crops grown in the uplands of Thailand, along with rice, cassava, sugar cane, and rubber trees. Government-promoted crop diversification, increased population growth, improved transportation networks, inter national trade, expansion of upland farming areas, and increased demand for...

Food Aid as Surplus Disposal? The WTO, Export Competition Disciplines and the Disposition of Food Aid AgEcon
Cardwell, Ryan T.; Fridfinnson, Brooke; Rude, James.
The empirical investigation suggests that there exists an endogenous relationship between subsidy/credit shipments and food aid for wheat in the US. The empirical VAR demonstrates a contemporaneous increase in food aid shipments as alternative vents constrict. This result suggests that a trade agreement that disciplines export subsidies and credits may put upward pressure on food aid shipments as agricultural exporters vent the pressure of their domestic surpluses. The empirical results suggest that in the US wheat market the effects are not large. The same phenomenon has been noted in the case of skim milk powder by Margulis; skim milk powder would provide another interesting empirical case, were the data available.

STIMULATING GROWTH AND MINIMIZING RISK IN AGRICULTURAL LENDING UNDER THE AGRICULTURAL CREDIT GUARANTEE SCHEME FUND (ACGSF) IN BAUCHI STATE, NIGERIA AgEcon
Nasiru, M.; Jibril, S.A.; Sani, R.M.; Sabo, A.M..
This study examined the impact of ACGSF in stimulating growth and minimizing of risk in Agricultural lending in Bauchi State. Forty three (43) farmers were randomly sampled and data collected through the use of structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation and multiple regression analysis. The results showed that farmers farm size increased considerably (P>0. 001) after taking the loan and the farm in come also increased (P<0. 001) after taking the loan for an average of two seasons. The results also showed that the educational level of the farmers does not affect loan amount directly even though there is strong positive correlation between the level of farmers’ education and their ability to meaningfully...

THE EMERGENCY FOOD ASSISTANCE SYSTEM - FINDINGS FROM THE PROVIDER SURVEY, VOLUME I: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY AgEcon
Ohls, James; Saleem-Ismail, Fazana.
Findings of the first comprehensive government study of the Emergency Food Assistance System (EFAS) suggest that public and private food assistance may work in tandem to provide more comprehensive food assistance than either could provide by itself. Five major types of organizations (emergency kitchens, food pantries, food banks, food rescue organizations, and emergency food organizations) that operate in the EFAS were studied. About 5,300 emergency kitchens provide more than 173 million meals a year, and 32,700 food pantries distribute about 2.9 billion pounds of food a year, which translates into roughly 2,200 million meals. Despite the substantial amounts of food distributed by the system, the EFAS remains much smaller in scale than the Federal...

The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997: Provisions for Farmers and Rural Communities AgEcon
Monke, James D.; Durst, Ron L..
Under the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, most farmers will pay less Federal income tax, and farm families will find it easier to transfer the family farm across generations. The new law--the tax portion of 1997 legislation to balance the Federal budget by 2002--emerges from years of debate on proposals for tax simplification, broad tax reduction, and targeted relief for capital gains and estate taxes. The legislation is expected to generate a net tax reduction of $95 billion over 5 years for all taxpayers. A number of general and targeted tax relief provisions will reduce Federal taxes significantly for farmers and other rural residents, but also will increase the complexity of both Federal income and estate taxes. Farmers are expected to save more than $1.6...

Tracking Client Performance: Monitoring Systems for Social Performance Management AgEcon
This Practice Note discusses how microfinance institutions (MFIs) can cost-effectively monitor and improve their social performance. By monitoring, we refer to regular, systematic and on-going collection of timely and appropriate information that helps the staff and clients of an organization to make decisions to improve the quality of their work. You probably already monitor your financial portfolio so that you can respond to problems and reduce risk. If you also monitor your success in meeting your social goals, this will help you to manage and improve your social performance, by revealing patterns and trends in who you reach and how they perform. This information allows you to track progress against objectives; to identify and respond to problems at...

PRODUCER SUPPORT ESTIMATES (PSEs) FOR AGRICULTURE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: MEASUREMENT ISSUES AND ILLUSTRATIONS FROM INDIA AND CHINA AgEcon
Mullen, Kathleen; Sun, Dongsheng; Orden, David; Gulati, Ashok.
In many developing countries, governments rely on price-based measures (including border protection and subsidies on inputs and outputs) more than on budgetary payments to achieve agricultural policy objectives defined to include price stabilization or food self-sufficiency. Assessing the effects of these price-based measures is thus important to evaluating whether agriculture is being protected or disprotected by commodity or in the aggregate. This aspect of producer support estimates (PSEs) is simple to describe conceptually but difficult to evaluate well empirically. Developing countries may face higher international transport and port costs for imports and exports than developed countries or may have substantial internal handling, transportation and...
