Differences between spring wheat cultivars for emergence and early development after seed infection with Fusarium culmorum Organic Eprints
Timmermans, B.G.H; Osman, A.M..
Infection of wheat seeds with Fusarium spp. causes seedling blight. As a result of this disease, fields sown with infected seeds show a reduced plant density. This is especially a problem in organic agriculture, for which currently no practical seed disinfection methods are available. In the present project we investigated whether spring wheat cultivars differ in sensitivity to seedling blight, whether the possible differences could be linked to cultivar differences in early growth rates, and what size the delay in canopy closure resulting from the plant reductions was. Six spring wheat cultivars (Melon, Lavett, SW Kungsjet, Epos, Pasteur, Thasos), containing three infection levels (averages 5, 15 and 27%) of Fusarium culmorum were obtained and were sown...

Organic seed production and seed regulation Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.
Organic farmers must use organic seed material if such seed are available. If not available, conventional seeds can be used. This request exists in all accredited standards for organic farming. In the EU-regulation on organic production methods, the derogation from the use of organic seed material will only exist until the end of 2003. After this date only organic seed material may be used according to the present formulation. Only a few countries in the EU have an organic seed production able to supply the market for organic seed material. It takes many years to develop a well functioning market for organic seeds. It is therefore unlikely that the derogation for the use of organic seed material will not be extended, since a majority of countries in the...

Screening Plant Genetic Resources under Organic Management for Breeding Organic Eprints
Kir, Alev; Karagul, Eylem Tugay; Kalin, Ahmet.
The breeding research of pea (Pisum sativum L.) and faba bean (Vicia faba L.) crops began in 2013 because of priority for these species to be produced organically in Turkey. Nurseries were set up to cultivate landraces of pea and faba bean for regeneration, multiplication and observation of agro-morphological characters in autumn season (November 2013) at Organic Open Field Experimental Area of Aegean Agricultural Research Institute (AARI) located in the Mediterranean Region. Cowpea (Vigna unguilucata L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.) trials were also included by AARI for comparing grain legume crops of organic breeding programme of COBRA (Coordinating Organic Plant Breeding Activities for Diversity) project. For this purpose, nurseries of pea (24...

Bliv din egen planteforædler Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.

Tolerance of competitive spring barley cultivars to weed harrowing Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Jesper; Kurtzmann, J.I.; Jensen, A..
Two experiments were conducted in 14 spring barley cultivars to investigate if crop tolerance to post-emergence weed harrowing is related to morphological traits that reflect competitiveness. The experiments were carried out in organically grown fields where low weed densities and biomass production were assumed to be without significant influence on crop growth. The experiments showed that different cultivars responded differently to post-emergence weed harrowing in terms of yield reduction. Taller and higher yielding cultivars with high LAIs tended to be less tolerant to post-emergence weed harrowing than shorter and lower yielding cultivars with low LAIs. This conclusion, however, is only valid for 13 out of 14 cultivars because one very tall cultivar...

Alte Kartoffelsorten Organic Eprints

Baresel, J P; Reents, Dr H J; Zimmermann, Dr G.
Baking quality is a major problem of wheat production in organic farming in Germany. The main reason is low protein content, but also different gluten characteristics. The aim of our investigations was to verify, whether selection of varieties with special adaptation to organic farming (or OF systems with particular low input) is advantageous. 66 Genotypes of winter wheat (registered German varieties, breeding lines, older varieties and varieties bred for organic farming) were compared in 5 environments over two years. Yield, protein content and quality parameters were assessed. Aptitude to LI- or HI- conditions was determined using intravarietal linear regression. While selection for special adaptation proved to be superior for yield and protein yield,...

Get a taste of new talented Robust potato cultivars Organic Eprints
Lammerts van Bueren, E.T.; Janmaat, Leen; Zeelenberg, Arend.
In the Netherlands the organic sector keeps growing, but organic potato production is lagging behind. This is due to the relatively high disease pressure from Phytophthora infestans, which causes foliage and tuber late blight. For organic potato growers this disease still forms a major cropping risk. In the potato breeding programme Bioimpuls, the Louis Bolk Institute and Wageningen UR are working together with breeding companies and farmer-breeders to develop robust cultivars that are resistant to Phytophthora. Thanks to these new cultivars, organic growers now have more chance of yield security. The next step is to collaborate with organic wholesalers and retailers to make sure that the new cultivars reach the shop shelves and consumers’ plates. In the...

Passt Hybridroggen zum Biolandbau? Organic Eprints
Arncken, Christine.

Selection of winter cereals for organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Mikó, P.; Megyeri, M.; Molnár-Lang, M.; Rakszegi, M.; Vida, G..
Productivity in agriculture has more than tripled in developed countries since the 1950s. Beyond the success of plant breeding, the increased use of inorganic fertilizers, application of pesticides, and spread of irrigation also contributed to this success. However, impressive yield increases started to decline in the 1980s because of the lack of sustainability. One of the most beneficial ways to increase sustainability is organic agriculture. In such systems the prerequisite of successful farming is the availability of crop genotypes that perform well. However, selection of winter cereals for sub-optimal growing conditions is still neglected, and the organic seed market also lacks of information on credibly tested varieties suitable for organic...

Oehen, Bernadette; Thommen, Andreas.
