Cardona,Christian Camilo Castañeda; Coronado,Yacenia Morillo; Conronado,Ana Cruz Morillo; Ochoa,Iván.
ABSTRACT The oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) plays an important role in the economy of some tropical countries; Colombia ranks first for production in Latin America and fifth in the world. The aim of this research was to characterize the genetic variability of 51 oil palm genotypes from the Congo with seven randomly amplified microsatellite markers RAM. As a result, 241 alleles were generated andthe number of polymorphic loci ranged from 46 to 14 for the ACA and CGA primers, respectively. High genetic diversity was found, with a total heterozygosity of 0.64, along with a high percentage of polymorphic loci, 89%. The coefficient of genetic differentiation (Fst) was 0.15, indicating that there was moderate genetic differentiation. The genetic diversity...

Backcrosses in a segregating population of Passiflora mediated by morphoagronomic and resistance traits Bragantia
Santos,Valquíria Oliveira dos; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Preisigke,Sandra da Costa; Santos,Eileen Azevedo.
ABSTRACT The present study aims to characterize the genetic diversity of Passiflora setacea, P. edulis, their hybrids, and first-backcross progenies, and to indicate promising recombinants for generation advancement in a breeding program for transferring resistance to cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus (CABMV). Ninety-one genotypes were evaluated for 37 morphoagronomic descriptors. The traits were analyzed to obtain a distance matrix, based on the Gower algorithm, using the Ward-Modified Location Model (MLM) procedure for the composition of genetic groups. The adopted strategy led to the formation of five homogeneous groups, where groups I, III, and V comprised the parents P. setacea, P. edulis and interspecific hybrids, respectively, while groups II and IV...

Sera,Gustavo Hiroshi; Sera,Tumoru; Ito,Dhalton Shiguer; Azevedo,José Alves de; Mata,João Siqueira da; Doi,Deisy Saori; Ribeiro Filho,Claudionor.
The aim of this study was to identify plants of the IAPAR-59 and Tupi IAC 1669-33 coffee cultivars with less defeated resistance genes by the rust races present at IAPAR (Londrina, Paraná State, Brazil) using test-crosses. Eighteen test-crosses derived from hybridizations between 'IAPAR-59' or 'Tupi IAC 1669-33' with susceptible coffee to the rust disease were evaluated. Six hybrids were used as susceptible standards originated from hybridizations between two susceptible coffee plants. Many parental plants of the 'IAPAR-59' and 'Tupi IAC 1669-33' presented more defeated resistance genes against rust races present at IAPAR than others of these cultivars or the genes were in heterozygous, because of segregant susceptible plants observed in some test-crosses....

Resistance to leaf rust in coffee carrying S H3 gene and others S H genes BABT
Sera,Gustavo Hiroshi; Sera,Tumoru; Ito,Dhalton Shiguer; Azevedo,José Alves de; Mata,João Siqueira da; Dói,Deisy Saori; Ribeiro Filho,Claudionor; Kanayama,Fabio Seidi.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the resistance to rust in coffee carrying S H3 gene and other S H genes. Twenty one CIFC’s coffee trees with several resistance genes S H were evaluated in field conditions. All the evaluated coffees carrying Sh3 gene presented resistance to the rust. It was possible that rust races with the virulence gene v3 in the Paraná State didn’t exist. The S H3 gene in combination with genes S H5, S H6, S H7, S H8, S H9 and S H? would be very important to obtain cultivars with more durable resistance to the rust.

Bioreactors in coffee micropropagation Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Etienne,Hervé; Dechamp,E; Barry-Etienne,D; Bertrand,Bernóit.
In coffee, bioreactors are the most promising way for scaling-up micropropagation processes, particularly somatic embryogenesis. The availability of an efficient somatic embryogenesis process would allow the rapid mass production of heterozygous materials such as selected Coffea canephora clones and F1 Arabica hybrid varieties. For the last fifteen years, bioreactors (mechanically or pneumatically agitated bioreactors, temporary immersion bioreactors) have mostly been used on coffee to optimize the mass regeneration of somatic embryos from embryogenic tissues. This review presents the main results, obtained with several bioreactor models, concerning the different steps of the micropropagation process : i) the multiplication of embryogenic tissues, ii) the...

Utility of basic research in plant/crop physiology in relation to crop improvement: a review and a personal account Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
El-Sharkawy,Mabrouk A..
Agricultural research and development plays an essential role in a nation's economic development, providing for food security for an ever-increasing population. In developed countries, the gap between potential and actual yield is largely closed because of a combination of advanced technologies, high-yielding new varieties and the application of agrochemicals in highly mechanized production systems. In most of these countries, agricultural production exceeds national demand, resulting in excess products for export. In many of the developing countries, however, agricultural productivity is still far below what it should be because of multiple technical and socio-economic constraints. Food deficits are the norm in poor and middle-income countries, requiring...
