Miljø- og klimavennlig melkeproduksjon. Inspirasjon fra seks melkeproduksjonsbruk. Organic Eprints
Hansen, Sissel; Bergslid, Ildri (Rose) Kristine.

Concepts for a multi-criteria sustainability assessment of a new more biobased economy in rural production landscapes Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, Tommy; Jørgensen, Uffe; Kristensen, I.T.; Gylling, M.; Dejgaard, J.; Dubgaard, Alex; Kjeldsen, Chris; Hermansen, J.E.; Turner, K.G.; Christen, Ben; Andersen, P.S..
This study presents a new approach to model the biophysical potentials for increased biomass harvest in Denmark, and a multi-criteria sustainability assessment of the socio-economic and environmental effects of different scenarios for such increased production and new biobased economy in rural landscapes. Thereby the results serve as input to the ongoing productivism – post-productivism debate related to rural spaces in Europe. Empirical results from a case study of large scale conversion to biorefenery technologies, aiming to increase the total Danish harvest of biomass by 10 million tonnes via the conversion to new types of crop production and land management, is used as an example, and will be related to the common conceptual model presented by the...

Policy instruments on water protection of the selected European countries in relation to organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Znaor, Darko.
Introduction Most agricultural operations, such as soil tillage, manuring, grazing, and irrigation, pose a serious threat to water quality. Agriculture is a heavy water user and a serious water polluter (nutrients, pesticides, salts, pathogens, heavy metals, oxygen-depleting and radioactive substances, etc.). In addition, agriculture threatens water habitats. The UN “Convention for the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes” ratified at Helsinki in 1992 obliges the signatory countries to further prevent, control and reduce water pollution from point and non-point sources. The implementation of the Convention is co-ordinated by the UN Economic Commission for Europe. In October 1999, this organisation commissioned a study...

Farm Level Economic Implications of Genetic Selection for Improving Milk Fat Composition AgEcon
Demeter, Robert Milan; Bovenhuis, Henk; Kristensen, Anders Ringgaard; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M.; Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; van Arendonk, Johan A.M..
The objective of the study was to assess the farm level economic implications of value-adding genetic selection strategies to improve milk fat composition. Selection based on a quantitative trait (ratio of total saturated to total unsaturated fatty acids in milk) or a known genotype (for the DGAT1 gene) was considered. Technical and economic performance of hypothetical herds were computed by a herd optimization and simulation model. It was assumed that the herds are already bred for the specific milk composition, and the transition period was not considered. Correlated effects of the selection scenarios on milk production, female fertility, and functional longevity traits were accounted for. Results showed that increasing the total unsaturated fatty acids...

The role of local production and the world price in setting local wheat, wool, and beef prices AgEcon
Frost, Mark; Parton, Kevin A..
The Australian dollar is considered primarily a commodity-based currency. The high level of commodity-based exports in Australia’s trade balance is given as an explanation. Accordingly changes in world commodity prices should bring commensurate changes in the value of the Australian dollar, such that changes in world commodity prices are only partially transmitted to the Australian economy and local farm-gate prices. If this relationship holds, then local farm-gate prices should be significantly less volatile than their respective world price. Variances in local prices would be due to local factors (e.g. variances in local production) rather than variances in the world price and international factors. This paper examines the farm-gate prices of Australia’s...

Economics of extended lactations in dairying AgEcon
Malcolm, Bill.
This paper deals with the economic analysis and management implications of extending lactations in specialised dairy cows. The main conclusion from this study is that in the two dairy farm cases that have been investigated in depth, the use of extended lactations to achieve efficient herd reproduction is highly likely to give greater profit than alternative systems that could be implemented. This conclusion holds even after allowing for less than total persistency of cows embarking on extended lactations. The overall outcome of a change from having only 10-month lactations to having some cows in the herd milking for extended lactations is determined by the complex interactions of all of the major input, output, cost and income factors at work in a dairy...
