Weinhappel, Manfred; Riepl, Ernestine.
Common Bunt (Tilletia caries) is a mainly seed borne disease and causes high losses in organic wheat and spelt production. Due to the basic role of seed health in disease prevention, seed quality aspects have to be focussed strictly in organic farming. In the scope of these studies, Tilletia results of 1291 wheat seed lots and 298 spelt wheat lots obtained from officially organic seed production from 2000 to 2012 have been analysed. The data indicated significantly the increasing spread of Tilletia caries in seed production in the last years, nevertheless in 2012 a high rate of more than 90% of the tested lots still corresponds to the requirements for untreated seed according to the Austrian Seed Regulations (threshold level 10 spores/kernel). As the...

A weed suppressive index for spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) varieties Organic Eprints
Hansen, Preben Klarskov; Willas, Jakob; Kristensen, Kristian.
A screening programme for crop variety competitiveness would ideally be based on only a few, non-destructive measurements of key growth traits. In this study we measured the weed suppressive ability of 79 varieties of spring barley in two ways: 1) directly, by weed coverage assessments under weedy conditions at three Danish locations in 2002-2004, and 2) indirectly, by non-destructive measurements of varietal growth traits under weed-free conditions in 17 other experiments in Denmark in 2001-2003. Based on just four varietal growth traits (reflectance, leaf area index, leaf angle and culm length), we successfully developed a method for indexing the weed suppressive ability of spring barley varieties. The suppressive index ranged from 12% in ‘Lux’ and 55%...

Klaedtke, Stephanie; Zimmer, Steffi; Aendekerk, Raymond.
Thirteen winter wheat varieties (Triticum aestivum L.) bred in conventional breeding programs and seven varieties from organic breeding were tested under organic conditions in two locations in 2009/10 and 2010/11 in Luxembourg. The objective was to analyze whether these conditions, organic varieties perform better than conventional ones. Grain yield (dt ha-1), protein content (%) and Zeleny sedimentation value were analyzed. The effect of the factor variety was statistically significant at a probability level of 0.05 for the three traits. For grain yield, the variety x year x location interaction was significant. For protein content, the variety x year interaction was significant. Location x year interaction was significant for sedimentation value. Results...

Biological nitrogen fixation and growth parameters correlations of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) genotypes under organically managed fields with limited irrigation Organic Eprints
Moghaddam, Ali; Raza, Amir; Vollmann, Johann; M.Reza, Ardakani; Wolfgang, Wanek; Gabriela, Gollner; Juergen K., Friedel.
To identify the effective characters and their relative importance in improvement of BNF, two separate field experiments were conducted under irrigated and rain-fed organic managements of dry, Pannonian region of east Austria. The experiments were laid out in an α-lattice design with two replications and 18 genotypes (eight Iranian ecotypes and ten European cultivars). Plant height was positively and significantly correlated with leaf area index (LAI) and shoot dry matter (DM) under both conditions. Positive correlations were found between biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) and shoot DM (r = 0.61** and 0.87**, irrigated and rain-fed management, respectively). Regarding correlation coefficients, high yielding genotypes had taller plants and denser stands,...

Root traits differ between wet- and dry-adapted sets of faba bean accessions selected by FIGS Organic Eprints
Khazaei, Hamid; Street, Ken; Abdallah, Bari; Fred, Stoddard.
Grain legumes, such as faba bean (Vicia faba L.), are important sources of protein, particularly for people in developing countries where climate change is expected to result in higher temperatures and changing precipitation patterns. Among grain legumes, faba bean is thought to be relatively sensitive to drought. Faba beans are important legumes in the crop rotations of organic farming. Deeper roots and larger root biomass have been shown to be important contributors to crop performance under drought conditions. Thus root traits could be used as the selection criteria for drought adaptation. During 2010–2011, two sets of faba bean accessions, from ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ regions, each containing 201 accessions, were chosen using the Focused Identification of...

Assessment of the susceptibility to pests and diseases of 36 apple cultivars in four low-input organic orchards in France Organic Eprints
Parveaud, Claude-Eric; Gomez, Christelle; Libourel, Gilles; Romet, Lionel; Warlop, Francois; Simon, Sylvaine; Brun, Laurent; Pouzoulet, Didier; Delebecq, Alain; Tournant, Ludovic; Oste, Sandrine; Laurens, François.
One of the keystones of the organic orchard is the cultivar choice as one element of pest and disease control. However, few exhaustive data sets concerning the cultivar susceptibility to pests and diseases are available for growers. In order to identify cultivars adapted to organic production methods, the susceptibility to scab, aphids and powdery mildew and the agronomic properties of 36 cultivars were assessed in four French sites under different pedo-climatic conditions. Different levels of susceptibility to scab were observed for 23 scab Vf-resistant and 13 other cultivars. In the North of France where Vf resistance is overcome, the Vf cultivars displayed different levels of scab severity. A high variability in the susceptibility to aphids was observed...

Melon varieties evaluation for organic horticulture in Extremadura (Spain) Organic Eprints
Sánchez-Giraldez, Helena; De la Cuadra, Celia; Ramos, María.
The correct selection of the variety is a fundamental principle in the organic production systems, in order to get a good adaptation and reduce the use of external inputs. So that, enough biodiversity is available to provide the market with horticultural crop varieties selected and developed under organic cultivation management. As part of a larger project, where several species have been on-farm evaluated using participatory evaluation methodologies, this survey shows the first year grown results of 17th melon varieties grown under open field conditions with an intermediate production cycle in the local area of La Jara del Romeral in the province of Caceres, the region of Extremadura located at the west of Spain.

Timmermann, Martin; Inhetveen, Heide; Becker, Heiko.

Contribution to organic breeding programmes of wheat variety testing in organic farming in France Organic Eprints
Fontaine, Laurence; Rolland, Bernard; Bernicot, Marie-Hélène.
Bread winter wheat is one of the most important cash crops for French organic farmers. Nevertheless, most of varieties available on the market were bred for conventional farming systems (with high inputs of mineral fertilizers and chemicals for crop defense). In order to obtain correct levels of yield and quality, it is important i) to screen current varieties to find the best suited for organic conditions, and ii) to rapidly obtain suitable varieties that are specifically bred for organic farming conditions. Bread wheat variety trials under organic conditions have been coordinated since the year 2001, to centralize and evaluate results at national level. The ringtest not only aims to compare varieties, but also to support organic breeding, as it provides...

Introductory considerations on crop diversity Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.
Modern society faces decreased biodiversity in nature caused by increased uniformity in agriculture, and health related problems with nutrition caused by industrialisation in food production. Conversion to organic farming increases biodiversity, because of diversification in crops and decreased intensity in control of weed and pests, and increase biochemical diversity within food products because of decreased nitrogen application in field. The author argues that the positive effects of in organic farming can be further improved by improved genetic diversity within the crop. Inter-cropping and variety mixtures are already used by some farmers, but diversity within the crop can be further improved by development of composite cross populations, composition...

Yield stability in winter wheat composite cross populations under organic and conventional conditions from the F5 to the F13. Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Finckh, Maria R..
The use of Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) as an alternative breeding approach, has gained significant interest, particularly due to the potential adaptability of evolving populations to specific locations. Three winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) CC populations were created in 2001 through collaboration between Elm Farm Research Centre (ORC) and the John Innes Institute in the UK. The populations were created through the inter-crossing of 20 parental varieties, in order to create a high yielding (Y) population; a high baking quality (Q) population and a population consisting of the 9 x 12 (YQ) intercrosses. Since 2005/6 (F5), the populations have been maintained at Kassel University without conscious selection. The objectives of the study are to...
