Diet of guanaco in sheep-free rangeland in Tierra del Fuego, Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Muñoz,Alejandra E; Simonetti,Javier A.
Guanaco (Lamaguanicoe), the only native ungulate of Tierra del Fuego, uses the forests more extensively after the introduction of sheep. It is presumed that the regeneration of lenga (Nothofagus pumilio) is hampered by guanaco browsing. In this context, the diet of guanaco in Tierra del Fuego was evaluated through a microhistological analysis of feces in a livestock-free area dominated by lenga forest. Guanacos behaved largely as herbivorous grazers and exhibited seasonal variations in their grazing habits. Compared to other studies in Tierra del Fuego, which were conducted in areas where sheep and guanaco grazed together, we reported that the guanacos avoided and consumed fewer trees. These results have management implications, as the proper management of...

Variables explicativas de los flujos de compra de alimentos en las Regiones VIII, IX y X de Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Schnettler,Berta L; Rebollo,Alfonso.

N. Lara, L. Figueroa, F. Carvajal, Y. Zapata, C. Urbina, and H. Escobar. 2013. Quantitative differentiation between soil organic carbon and biochar carbon in Aridisol. Cien. Inv. Agr. 40(2): 387-395. To understand the effect of biochar, identify its presence and quantify its stability in soil, it is necessary to differentiate between the two main sources of carbon. These sources are resident soil organic matter and biochar, which is produced by burning organic matter under low oxygen concentration in a process known as pyrolysis. The present study employs solid-liquid extraction with an alkaline solution, the efficiency of which was improved by a reflux system and quantification using the modified Walkley-Black method, to distinguish the two carbon sources...

The importance of weeds as melliferous flora in central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Grimau,Lissette; Gómez,Miguel; Figueroa,Rodrigo; Pizarro,Rodrigo; Núñez,Gabriel; Montenegro,Gloria.
The use of native flora by Apis mellifera L. in Chile has been demonstrated in many studies; however, certain species that are viewed as weeds contribute extensively to the floral composition of honey. A total of 92 honey samples from the Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins region in Chile were analyzed to determine which weeds are most important in honey production and which are most preferred by melliferous bees. Their relative contributions to the pollen fraction of each honey sample were also determined using melissopalynological tests in accordance with Chilean regulation (NCh2981.Of2005; Ministerio de Agricultura. 2006) to evaluate the botanical origins of the honey samples. Species considered weeds were classified according to their importance in...

Energy potential of vine shoots in La Rioja (Spain) and their dependence on several viticultural factors Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Mendívil,Manuel Antonio; Muñoz,Pedro; Morales,María Pilar; Juárez Castelló,Manuel C.
Each year, viticulture generates thousands of tons of vine shoots in the Spanish La Rioja region without an adequate system for their use. This study attempts to increase the value of this residual biomass, mainly for energy generation. To this end, a representative sampling of vine varieties and vineyards in the region was taken and later thermochemically characterized, measuring moisture, ash content percentage, elemental composition and higher heating value (HHV) among all sampled lots. From these tests, only the variety factor of the vine exhibited any statistically significant influence. A correlation has been formulated to express the higher heating value of vine shoots in terms of their elemental composition, obtaining an estímate with a mean...

Photosynthetic and antioxidant performance are differentially affected by short-term nitrogen supply in highbush blueberry cultivars Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Yañez-Mansilla,Erwin; Cartes,Paula; Reyes-Díaz,Marjorie; Ribera-Fonseca,Alejandra; Alberdi,Miren.
Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for photosynthesis and may influence phenolic compound synthesis in higher plants. The effect of different amounts of N (0 to 38 mM) provided on a short-term (4 d) basis on the photosynthetic and antioxidant performance of highbush blueberry cultivars (Legacy and Bluegold) grown in a nutrient solution was studied. In both cultivars, the N concentration of leaves slightly increased in response to the N supply, with Bluegold frequently showing higher N concentrations than Legacy. Photosynthesis was reduced in Bluegold at the highest N dose, whereas in Legacy, a decrease of CO2 assimilation occurred under N starvation. This decrease in photosynthesis was accompanied by enhanced lipid peroxidation but only in Bluegold. In...

Evaluating orchard and poplar leaves during autumn as an alternative fodder source for livestock feeding Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Temel,Suleyman; Pehluvan,Mucahit.
Fruit tree and poplar leaves that fall in autumn are undervalued in terms of animal feeding mainly because of insufficient knowledge about their potential feeding value. Knowledge of the nutritional values of these species may be important to supplement the feed of grazing animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential fodder value of leaves of plum, apple, poplar, mulberry, peach and apricot trees. For this purpose, samples were collected by hand in autumn 2012 and 2013 when 50% of the leaves had dropped and 90% of the leaves had turned yellow. The crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), acid detergent lignin (ADL), dry matter digestibility (DMD), digestible energy (DE), metabolizable energy (ME)...

Social choice and groundwater management: application of the uniform rule Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Martinez,Yolanda; Esteban,Encarna.
Y. Martinez, and E. Esteban. 2014. Social choice and groundwater management: application of the uniform rule. Cien. Inv. Agr. 41(2): 153-162. In recent decades, the protection of groundwater resources has become a key element in environmental policies around the world as the control of groundwater extraction is necessary to avoid groundwater depletion. This paper proposes a system to improve the allocation of groundwater resources based on the theory of social choice. We propose the implementation of the uniform rule as a mechanism to achieve more efficient groundwater allocation. The uniform rule combines individual preferences to reach collective decisions and respects the anonymity between agents. Additionally, the rule is Pareto efficient and...

Production of lettuce seedlings (Lactuca sativa) in granular rockwool and expanded perlite for use in hydroponics Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Tapia,Maria Luisa; Caro,José Marcelo.
The quality of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seedlings is closely dependent on the substrate and the management practice during the transplant to the hydroponic system. This seed bed process may affect the normal development of the seedlings by affecting the post-transplanting period, potentially causing root stress, influencing establishment and even leading to seedling loss. An important criterion when choosing either a single or mixed substrate is the ability to provide for both growth and establishment of the seedlings in the hydroponic system. The main objective of this study was to evalúate the effect of granulated rockwool substrate (Agrolan™, Compañía IndustrialEl Volcán S.A., Santiago, Chile), expanded perlite A6 (Harbolite Chile Ltda., Santiago,...

A comparison of farmland value determinants in Chile between 1978-1998 and 1999-2008 Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Donoso,Guillermo; Cancino,José; Olguín,Ricardo; Schonhaut,Daniela.
Research on the determinants that influence the price of farmland has found renewed interest in the past decade because agricultural land values are an important source of information for tracing the distribution of benefits generated by agricultural growth. This study's objective is to identify the determinants of the value of agricultural land in Chile for the periods 1978-1998 and 1999-2008 to analyze the evolution of the factors that determined the price of agricultural land between these two periods. The explanatory power of the estimated hedonic land price model is significantly greater for the period 1978-1998 (R²= 67%). The lower explanatory power of the model for the period 1999-2008 (R²= 29%) indicates that factors not accounted for in the model...
