ABSTRACT Dehydration of plant products extends its shelf life and reduces its mass and volume, which increases transport and storage efficiency and adds value to food. However, it is an intensive process in energy and time, making necessary the search for more efficient technologies, Thus, this study aimed to investigate the infrared ginger dehydration process by approaching the constant period of dehydration to the theory of mass and heat transfer process to the wet bulb thermometer and the decreasing period of dehydration to liquid diffusion theory. We submitted 5.0 mm thickness and 2.0 cm diameter slices to a dryer with infrared radiation at 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 °C until constant mass. Heat and mass transfer coefficients, and effective diffusion... |

ABSTRACT In the last decades, the areas of irrigated crops in the state of Minas Gerais have grown considerably, contributing to increase agricultural production in the country. Among the techniques of irrigation management, the determination of the water consumption by the plants is based on the reference evapotranspiration (ET0), the objective of this work was to evaluate and calibrate the Hargreaves-Samani (HS) method and a Proposed Method (MP) against the standard Penman-Monteith-FAO method (PM-FAO) for the state of Minas Gerais. For that, data from 52 conventional meteorological stations of the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) were used. ET0 was estimated by the methods cited including the Hargreaves-Samani calibrated method (HScal) based on... |

ABSTRACT Acerola is a tropical fruit that stands out for its high content of ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds. However, there is currently a lack of information on the effects of the preparation and domestic storage of fruit juices, especially that of acerola. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different liquefying times (10, 30 and 50 s) and cold storage at 4 °C for 0, 24, 48 and 72 h in domestic acerola juice. In relation to such, physicochemical determinations were performed, including pH, total titratable acidity, antioxidant potential, contents of phenolic compounds and total flavonoids in juices produced from the whole fruit, the pulp and acerola seed extracts. Whole fruit juice, liquefied for 10 s, had the highest pH and... |

ABSTRACT Given the impact of climate issues and their direct influence on agricultural production, the aim of this study was to identify superior genotypes of dry edible common bean under water deficit. Thus, 30 common bean genotypes were evaluated under controlled greenhouse conditions in a randomized block experimental design with split plots and four replications; the plots consisted of the water treatments (irrigated and water deficit) and the split plots consisted of the genotypes. The results showed genetic variability among the accessions evaluated, and in spite of significant reduction in grain yield and stomatal conductance under water deficit, these two traits showed significant, positive correlation and are able to be applied in early selection... |

ABSTRACT Knowing genes related to water deficit is a valuable tool to assist and accelerate the selection process of maize genotypes more adapted to drought conditions. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate genes expression related to tolerance to water deficit in maize lines, using proteomic and transcriptomic analyses. Two lines previously classified as tolerant (91-T) and non-tolerant (57-NT) to low water availability were used. Dried seeds, ears tips, and seedlings (collected at three, five, and seven days after sowing) of the two maize lines (91-T and 57-NT) were used in proteomic analyses. Seedlings were subject to two contrasting water-availability conditions (70% and 10% of the water retention capacity). The expression of catalase, peroxidase, and... |

ABSTRACT Given the potentiality of nanoparticles (NP) to load substances as active principle of drugs, cosmetics and food, there is interest in increasing its production. Particularly in the agroindustrial area, the byproducts are source of functional compounds that must be stabilized by encapsulation, for example, to allow its application. Considering the amount of generated byproducts, it is necessary to understand the encapsulation synthesis in a high scale dimension. In this way, the active compounds vitamin C (from the byproduct of the acerola processing) and polyphenols (from the byproduct of grape processing) were nanoencapsulated into chitosan NP at three reactional volumes: 0.1; 1.0 and 10.0 dm3. The NP were characterized for yield, particle size,... |

ABSTRACT In Brazil, as the soybean crop expands the losses caused by nematodes as well as its incidence in producing areas have increased. Therefore, this work aimed to develop a non-genetically modified soybean which combines desirable traits as the root-knot nematode resistance, early-maturity, high seed yielding, and high oil and protein contents. Consequently, seeds (F2) derived from the double-crossing between (Guarani x Sambaiba) x (M Soy 6101 x Conquista) were bulked to grow the F3 generation. Following generations were advanced by the SSD method of breeding until F6. Thus, plants showing superior characteristics were planted separately to perform progeny tests and then advanced breeding lines were thoroughly tested and compared to standards in... |

ABSTRACT Crambe is an oilseed plant whose oil is suitable for various industrial purposes, such as production of biodiesel, plastics, rubbers, and cosmetics. There are reports of the rusticity of this species and its potential for growth in arid and semi-arid environments, where water scarcity and soil salinity are common. However, studies regarding the tolerance of its seeds to these stresses and the physiological responses triggered during germination and seedling establishment under these conditions are incipient. The objective of this study was to evaluate the tolerance of crambe seeds to water deficit and salt stress during germination and early seedling development, as well as to investigate the role of antioxidant enzymes on tolerance to these... |
